Papa’s jaw dropped when Mama told him that Sister had cheated on her final examsnot to succeed but to fail. “It’s unbelievable!” he said. “Sister has always been so proud of her good grades!”

“Yes, she has,” said Mama. “But it’s not unbelievable. It just shows how badly she wanted off the swimming team.”

“Wanted off the swimming team?” said Papa. “She never said anything about that to me.”

“Of course she didn’t,” said Mama. “She was afraid you’d blow your top. You already had her getting a swimming scholarship to college and winning gold medals at the Olympics. Can you imagine how much pressure she must have felt? For her, being on the team couldn’t have been much fun.”

“Oh, my gosh!” Papa said, clapping a hand to his forehead. “I’ve been so stupid! I just thought she’d want to be a champion swimmer because she’s so good at it.”

“It’s like anything else, dear,” said Mama. “No matter how good at it you are, if it stops being fun, you won’t want to do it anymore.”

Papa put his head in his hands.

“She must be really mad at me,” he mumbled. “Maybe I should say sorry to her.”

Sister’s footsteps could be heard on the stairs. She came into the kitchen and looked hopefully up at her parents.

“Honey,” said Mama with a smile, “your papa and I have decided that there’s no reason for you to be on the swimming team if you don’t want to.”

Sister’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. “Yippee!” she cried.

“And,” added Papa, “there’s no need for any more drills. I’m sure you’ll bring your grades back up all by yourself.”

Sister ran to Papa and jumped into his arms. She gave him a big hug. “I’m going to go play cards with Lizzy!” she said. “See you later!”

From the kitchen window, Mama and Papa watched their daughter run down the sunny road toward Lizzy’s house.

“It’s good to see her happy again,” said Mama.

“It sure is,” Papa agreed. “As for the swimming team, there’s always next year.”

  “If?” Mama prompted him.

“Oh, right,” said Papa. “If she wants to.”

Mama smiled. “At least you’re learning, dear,” she said. She kissed him.

“Well, you know what they say,” Papa said. “Better late than never.”

56. Sister wanted off the swimming team because _____.

Jogging has become the most popular individual sport in America. Many theories have been put forward to explain the popularity of jogging. The truth is that jogging is a cheap, quick and efficient way to achieve physical fitness.
The most useful sort of exercise is exercise that develops the heart, lungs, and circulatory (循环)systems. If these systems are fit, the body is ready for almost any sport and for almost any sudden demand made by work or emergencies. Running trains your heart and lungs to deliver oxygen more efficiently to all parts of your body. It is worth noticing that this sort of exercise is the only kind that can reduce heart disease, the number one cause of death in America.
The only equipment that is needed is a good pair of shoes. Physicians advise beginning joggers not to run in tennis or gym shoes. A good running shoe will give the knee and ankle(脚踝)more stability(稳定性). Wearing good shoes will prevent the foot, ankle and knee injures and will also enable the wearer to run on different surfaces.
No other special equipment is needed; you can jog in any clothing you want, even in your street clothes. Many joggers wear expensive, flashy warm–up suits, but many people just wear a simple T-shirt or jog in last year’s clothes. In cold weather, several layers(层) of clothing are better than one heavy sweater or coat. If joggers are wearing several layers of clothing, they can add or take off layers as conditions change.
It takes surprisingly little time to develop the ability to run. The American Jogging Association has a twelve–week program designed to move from a fifteen–minute walk (which almost anyone in reasonable health can manage) to a thirty-minute run. A measure of common sense, a physical examination, and a planned schedule are all it takes.

60. The main purpose of this passage is to .

A. discuss jogging as a physical fitness program
B. describe the type of clothing needed for jogging

C. provide scientific evidence of the benefits of jogging

D. promote some shoes for jogging

61. Which of the following is the only special equipment that joggers need?

A. Good shoes. B. Street clothes. C. Expensive suits. D. Warm-up trousers.

62. The most useful kind of exercise is exercise that .

A. trains the body for weight lifting
B. enables a person to run ahead with great power

C. is both beneficial and inexpensive

D. develops the heart, lungs, and circulatory systems

63. We can conclude from this passage that .

A. because of jogging, heart disease is no longer an American problem
B. jogging can be harmful if the runner is not properly prepared
C. warm–up suits are better than T-shirts for jogging
D. jogging is bad for your heart and lungs

C

Scientists have long understood the key role that oceans play in regulating the Earth’s climate. Oceans cover 70 percent of the globe and store a thousand times more heat than the atmosphere does. What’s newer is the understanding of how this key factor of our climate system responds to global warming.

A brake(刹车) on global warming—for now

One of the ocean’s most important climate functions is absorbing heat and carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the gases that cause global warming. Acting as a heat sponge (海绵), the oceans have absorbed huge amounts of heat and CO2 in the last forty years.

Fujita explains that “the oceans are saving us from faster climate change—they are a big flywheel that delays rapid overheating of the earth, putting a brake on the climate system.”

“That’s the good news,” he adds. “The bad news is that the oceans only slow the atmospheric warming. Once the oceans come to balance with a greenhouse-gas warmed earth, the extreme heat will remain in the atmosphere and things will get much hotter.” But where and how the oceans release this accumulated (积累) heat is uncertain. And as the ocean stores heat, weak underwater ecosystems are struggling.

The most recent scientific report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) also notes with concern that the ocean is acidifying because of increased absorption of atmospheric CO2, and thus causing a threat for shell-forming species. Sharp increases in carbon dioxide levels will cause further acidification of the ocean.

Currents distributing(分配,散布)heat

Another important role the oceans play is that of distributor. Oceans deliver heat and life-sustaining nutrients around the globe. Just as blood vessels bring oxygen and nutrients to cells in the human body, the ocean’s currents carry oxygen, nutrients and heat throughout the Earth. The ocean distributes 25 to 50 percent of the energy the planet receives from the sun. For example, the Gulf Stream carries heat across the Atlantic. This warm current gives northwestern Europe a milder climate than it would normally have so far north. A change to the ocean’s circulation (循环) patterns could throw Europe into a colder period, even as the rest of world experiences warmer temperatures.

64. We can infer from the passage that _____.

A. the oceans cause global warming B. the oceans stop global warming

C. the oceans release nutrients and heat  D. the ocean ecosystems face more dangers

65. From the passage we can learn that the ocean’s currents _____.

A. produce oxygen and nutrients everywhere B. absorb 25~50% of the energy from the sun

C. distribute heat and nutrients around D. change the ocean’s circulation patterns

66. Which of the following is NOT the result of the ocean absorbing heat and carbon dioxide?

A. It causes further acidification. B. It affects shell-forming species.

C. It makes the atmosphere hotter. D. It regulates the Earth’s climate.

67. This passage mainly talks about ______.

A. the roles of oceans B. global warming C. ocean currents D. carbon dioxide

Teamwork is the process of a group of people working together in order to achieve a goal. It is an essential part of any business.

First and the most important, a team must have been communicated to them a clear goal to work towards. Poor communication may lead to unsatisfactory results. A strong team will also include a mixture of people, with different academic backgrounds and skills. The team must be able to talk openly and honestly to each other, sharing ideas and making suggestions while listening to and understanding what others have to say.

While many employees are able to perform important functions on their own, working as a team brings a wide range of talents and resources to a project that would be almost impossible for just one person to match. Ideas on the project itself and how to achieve its goals can be exchanged, and new points of view voiced, which would be difficult to achieve with just one person, who may be firmly fixed on one perspective (思考方法), thus lowering the quality of the results.

Because a team is a group of people, each with their own opinions and personalities, conflicts can and do arise. If not acted upon swiftly and effectively, this can lower morale (士气) in the team and reduce productivity, affecting the quality of results achieved. A team can also take longer than an individual to achieve a goal, as organizing a team often requires considerable preparation.

Having a good team working on a project ensures that the task will be dealt with thoroughly and this means the goal will be achieved with high quality. A good team will also create trust and confidence, both in themselves and one another. And this will benefit both the individuals and the company.

How to communicate with our parents

Hello, everyone. I’d like to share with you my ideas about this topic.

Parents are the people who love us most, so it’s necessary to keep a good relationship with them. Here are my ideas on how to make it easier to communicate with parents.

First, we should respect and trust our parents. Don’t be rude to them even if they have done something wrong. They have experienced more and always try their best to protect us from dangers. Second, if we often talk with them about our life and experience, we will know each other better. Third, if sometimes we don’t agree with our parents’ decision, we should try to put ourselves into their shoes and we will soon understand them.

Thank you for listening.

Text 10

W: There are many ways in which the memory can be improved. In fact, I believe we all have the ability to remember up to six times more than we do.

A lot of people find that visualizing information is very helpful. For example, if you are trying to remember a telephone number, imagine it written down on a piece of paper.

Remembering people’s names is a problem for a lot of people. I recommend that when you are introduced to someone you concentrate on his or her first name. It probably won’t offend anyone if you have to say, "What was your last name again, Sarah?" but Sarah might be upset if you forget her first name.

Of course, regular breaks are important and it’s better not to work for long periods without taking one, stopping for rest about every twenty minutes is best.

Finally, take care of yourself physically. Avoid substances like coffee, alcohol or drugs, because they dull the mind. And don’t forget your vitamins---Bi and B2 are particularly good for the memory.
