The Age of Unreason

Charles Handy

In his book The Age of Unreason Professor Handy describes the dramatic changes that are taking place in our lives today and warns that we must adapt to these changes if we want to survive in the future.

Handy believes that in the future less than 50% of the workforce will be employed fulltime by an organization. These fulltime employees will be the qualified professionals, technicians, and managers who are essential to an organization. Their working lives will be a lot more demanding than today, but in return they will be wellpaid and they will retire earlier. The rest of the workforce will be selfemployed or will work parttime, providing organizations with the products and services they require on a contract basis. Handy forecasts a big increase in the number of working mothers in future and believes there will be a large number of unemployed.

Handy gives us plenty of figures to worry about. He estimates that by the year 2040, one person in five will retire, and one in ten will be over seventyfive years old. There will be one retiree to every three people of working age, and even more than that in countries such as Germany and Switzerland, where the proportion will be as much as one to two. Retirees will remain healthy and active for longer than they do today and many will live to be a hundred years old, a fact which leads Handy to suggest that the term retirement will no longer be appropriate. He suggests the third age is a more appropriate description, since it will be as important a part of our lives as the first age of learning and the second age of working are for us today.

Dayron Robles of Cube was disqualified(取消资格) of his mark and the title in the men's 110m hurdles final for disruption (中断,破坏) of the event after the Chinese team made an appeal on Monday night at the Daegu worlds.

In the breathtaking final, Robles and Chinese legend Liu Xiang were neighbors in Lane 5 and Lane 6, respectively. After the starting gun fire, the two world's fastestever hurdlers were almost running neck to neck in the first eight hurdles and took the lead.

In the ninth hurdle, however, Robles' right trailing hand was seen hitting on Liu's left hand. As a result, Liu's rhythm was disturbed and his blistering pace slowed down. Right before the tenth and final hurdle, Robles made further hand contact with Liu, who tripped on the hurdle.

An official with the IAAF told reporters that the Daegu track referee council has decided to disqualify Robles' mark and it was unknown whether the Cuban team would appeal.

Before the disqualification, Robles won the 110m hurdles in 13.14 seconds, followed by Jason Richardson with 13.16 seconds. Liu Xiang finished third in 13.27 seconds.

Robles, in a televised interview, admitted that he didn't like his technique in Monday night's game and he was tangling with Liu over the last hurdle.

Liu said he “felt like someone touched my elbow and I lost my balance for a while but then I managed to stabilize it”

A member of Liu's coach team had told Xinhua right after the game that the Chinese Athletics Association might appeal for the disruption. While Liu told reporters that he didn't care about the color of the medal.

Are you media addicts who would go mad after two hours without TV, friend requests, exciting online games and your mobile—or would you easily survive?

Recently, university students around the world were asked to volunteer in a global experiment called Unplugged. It was designed to see how young people would react if they were asked to observe a total media ban by unplugging all forms of media devices for 24 hours.

Unplugged is being run by Dr Roman Gerodimos, a lecturer in Communication and Journalism at Bournemouth University. The experiment is now over but he doesn't yet know the full findings. However, during the experiment, Dr Gerodimos said there were already signs of how much the exercise affected volunteers. He said: They're reporting withdrawal symptoms(症状), overeating, feeling nervous, isolated and disconnected. During their 24hour painful experience, three of the experiment's guinea pigs had to endure one intrusion(侵扰) from the media: a BBC reporter plus cameraman who followed them around for the day. They were asked to write down 100 lines about their day offline, but of course, they all waited until the next day when they had access to their laptops. Elliot Day wrote: “Today, my whole morning routine was_thrown_up_into_the_air. Despite being aware of the social importance of the media, I was surprised by how empty my life felt without the radio or newspapers.” From Caroline Scott, we readI didn't expect it, but being prevented from the media for 24 hours resulted in my daytoday activities becoming so much harder to carry out than usual...I didn't break out in a cold sweat like our lecturer expected us all to, but it's not something I would like to do again And Charlotte Gay wrote: “I have to say the most difficult item for me to be without has been my mobile; not only is it a social tool, it's my main access point of communication.”

Earlier in the year, a UK government study found that in the UK we spend about half our waking hours using the media, often plugged into several things at once. And a recent study by Nielson found that on average, US teenagers send and receive over 3,000 texts per month—that's about six texts per waking hour. So, with technology continuing to develop at an alarming rate, how much time will you set aside for sleep in the future?

文章大意:两个小时不看电视,不上网不玩手机的话,你会有啥反应?看一下叫Unplugged的全球实验吧!

(2012·南昌一模)

One Tuesday evening in the beginning of the fall 1996 semester at Shippensburg University, sirens(警笛) sounded. These sirens were not in celebration; they were a cry to the university that something was wrong. A house, only one block away, was on fire. Nine of the university's students lived there.

From the minute the word got out that help was needed, it seemed like everyone showed up. The victims of the fire were offered endless invitations for housing for the night. The very next day, everyone got_into_gear to do their part in helping them. Flyers(小传单)were posted with items that were immediately needed, just to get these students through this next couple of days. Boxes for donations and money jars were placed in every residence hall(学生宿舍)

As a residence directorI went before the students in my hall to ask them to do what they could. I knew that college students don't have much, but I asked them to do their best: “Every little bit will help.” I really didn't think they could do much. I was proved wrong.

At the hall council meeting the night after the fire, my residents decided to have a wing competition, where each wing of the building would team up to see who could bring in the most donations. I announced that the wing who won would receive a free pizza party.

Thursday evening we announced over the PA system that we were beginning the wing competition. Within minutes, the place exploded. The single large box that I had placed in the lobby (大厅) was overflowing. We quickly grabbed more boxes, and we watched in amazement as they, too, filled to the brim. Members of the resident assistant staff and I began to count the items. I was astonished by what I saw, and I was inspired by these kids.

When we came to the final tally(得分), the winners turned to me and announced that they would like to donate their winnings as well. They wanted the victims of the fire to have their pizza party.

Tears welled up in my eyes. I had watched these students jump to action, work tirelessly and donate all that they could. And then, as if that were not enough, they handed over their reward. I was touched and so very proud of them.

C. Surprised. D. Serious

Dear_classmates

I_am_more_than_pleased_to_share_with_you_Wang_Wei's_story.

On his way home yesterday afternoon, Wang Wei noticed an old lady fall to the ground and went up to her help without hesitation/delay. After helping her to safety, he dialed 120 and the granny got timely treatment in hospital.

I was deeply impressed by what Wang Wei had done. There is no doubt that such a deed should be encouraged. Firstly, it has been one of the traditional Chinese virtues to help those in trouble. Secondly, people nowadays seem to be getting more and more unwilling to help others, especially the aged. Therefore, Wang Wei's behavior is of great significance in awakening people's awareness of helping others. Thirdly, it is our duty to make our world a more harmonious place to live in.

In short, I strongly advocate/suggest that all of us should learn from Wang Wei and always be ready to help others.

That's_all._Thank_you.
