At a farm off Narrow Lane near Lexington, Kentucky, the US, oldfashioned houses look over the little red barn (畜舍). The farm is mostly empty now. Jim Mahan and his family, who lived there for generations, have moved to a different plot of land in northern Fayette County. As land is sold, houses go up where there once were fields.

But during the summer, the barn is filled with city kids who have come to enjoy the farm. They're members of the Fayette County Livestock (FCL) Club, which showcases skills as varied as cutting wool. The barn is where they look after the animals. A lot of Lexington kids don't know anything about farm life said Adria Meier, 17, who has looked after goats and sheep for three years. “There is so much to learn.”

The dozen or so children who take care of their goats and sheep at the little red barn must do a sixhour class before they get an animal. They pay for their own animals but get special club programs, such as one that provides vets (兽医)

Mahan lets the group use the barn for free, and the kids spend up to three hours a day there during the summer. But as his land gets sold, he doesn't know whether the club can continue. What makes the FCL Club special is that most of the kids can't just walk out their doors and take care of their animals. Most are driven to the barn by their mothers, who usually hang around and chat as their kids feed and exercise the animals.

There are valuable lessons learned along the way. For instance, don't cut wool off your goat when there is wind, and sheep are social animals and will cry loudly when separated. Tending animals helps teach us responsibility. Unlike learning to shoot an arrow, caring for an animal isn't something you can simply abandon said Carly Playforth, 16, of Lexington.

Try this: For an entire day, forget about the clock. Eat when you're hungry and sleep when you're tired. What do you think will happen?

You may be surprised to find that your day is much like most other days. You'll probably get hungry when you normally eat and tired when you normally sleep. Even though you don't know what time it is, your body does. These patterns of daily life are called circadian rhythms (生理节奏), and they are more than just habits. Inside our bodies are several clocklike systems that follow a roughly 24hour cycle. Throughout the day and night, our inner clocks direct changes in temperature, body chemicals, hunger, sleepiness and more.

Everyone's rhythms are different, which is why you might like to stay up late while your sister always wants to go to bed early. But on the whole, everyone is programmed to feel tired at night and energetic during the day. Learning about our body clocks may help scientists understand why problems arise when we act out of step with our circadian rhythms. For example, traveling across time zones can make people wake up in the middle of the night. Regularly staying up late can make kids do worse in tests.

There is a growing sense that when we eat and when we sleep are important parts of how healthy we are says Steven Shea, director of the Sleep Disorders Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

One way to learn about how our body clocks tick is to mess them up and see what happens. That's what neurologist (神经病学家) Frank Scheer and his workmates did in a recent study. Staying up night after night, their studies suggest, could make kids extra hungry and more likely to gain weight. And regularly sleeping too little, Scheer says, may be one cause of the recent increase in childhood obesity.

5What will happen if you forget about the clock according to the passage?

AYou will feel upset.

BYou will behave normally.

CYour body will not know what time it is.

DYou will probably get hungry more easily.

第二段中的第一、二句“You may be surprised to find that your day is much like most other days. You'll probably get hungry when you normally eat and tired when you normally sleep.”

6Mike feels energetic at 12 midnight while Tom feels sleepy. What advice would be given by the writer?

ABoth should see a doctor.

BTom should see a doctor.

CBoth should take it easy.

DMike should have a watch.

第三段中的第一句“Everyone's rhythms are different, which is why you might like to stay up late while your sister always wants to go to bed early.”

7How do Frank Scheer and his workmates study body clocks?

ABy seeing what happens when they are messed up.

BBy asking questions and collecting answers.

CBy studying people traveling across time zones.

DBy programming people with manmade clocks.

最后一段第一句“One way to learn about how our body clocks tick is to mess them up and see what happens.”

8What will the writer most probably talk about next?

AOther examples of what people will do when their body clocks go wrong.

BSome effective medicines that can keep people from putting on weight.

CThe importance of eating healthy food.

DWhat circadian rhythms are and how they work.

C

Competition in the workplace can be a good thing for a number of different reasons. On the other hand, competition can also have some disadvantages, though. Some industries tend to be more competitive in the workplace than others. For instance, those in the sales field will typically be more competitive with coworkers than individuals in other fields, such as information technology. Nevertheless, a little competition in even the least competitive industries can be positive.

Competition in the workplace can create an environment where employees push each other to exceed their normal limits, which can result in increased production, both at an individual level and among the entire workforce as a whole. As individual production numbers increase, so do those of the entire team of workers who seek to outdo one another. Competition can be rewarded with bonuses or various types of rewards.

Workplace competition can also inspire a commitment to selfimprovement. While financial motivations and bonuses are always a plus to get the competition going, those who see the bigger picture may take the competition as an opportunity to better themselves in the process of winning the competition. Selfimprovement may include actions like changing work habits to be more organized, using visualization and goal setting to achieve goals and simply performing higher quality work.

Not all competition in the workplace necessarily has to take place at the individual level. Competition can bring about a sense of teamwork in the workplace when workers are placed in groups and asked to compete with one another, which can have a number of positive results that come from workers cooperating with each other. For example, workers can learn the value of communication and helping someone else, both of which have an influence on other areas of work like customer service.
