A man wakes up with a big hangover (宿醉) the morning after attending his company’s annual Summer Party. He can’t even remember how he got home from the party, let alone how he got so drunk and is deathly afraid of what he may have done or said the night before to make his wife angry.

The man forces his eyes open and the first things he sees are two headache tablets next to a glass of water on his table, and, next to them, a single red rose! He sits up with difficulty and sees his clothing on the back of his chair all clean and pressed and the rest of the house all in perfect order.

Doubtful, the man takes the tablets and sees a black eye looking back at him from the bathroom mirror. Then he finds a note next to the red rose on the table, “Sweetie, breakfast is waiting for you on the stove. I left early to buy the cooking materials to make your favorite dinner tonight. I love you, darling!” The note was signed, “Your loving wife.”

The man then walks into the kitchen. His daughter Jessie is at the table, eating. “Jessie…what happened last night?” The man asks, with great fear.

“Well, you came home around four o’clock in the morning, drunk and out of your mind. You stumbled and fell onto the coffee table and broke it, and got this black eye when you crashed into the table’s edge.”

Puzzled, the man asks Jessie, “Then why is there a rose on my table and breakfast on the stove waiting for me?”

“Oh that,” Jessie replies, “well, Mom pulled you into your bedroom, and when she tried to undress you, you yelled, ‘Leave me alone; I’m married and I love my wife!’”

21. Why did the man have a black eye?

A. He had a terrible headache. B. He didn’t sleep well the night before.

C. He was hit in the eye by his wife. D. He fell over and knocked onto the table.

22. The wife did so much for her husband that morning probably because _____.

Several dollars equal nothing for some people, but make a difference for others. Steve has just lost his wife to cancer and everything they had is gone due to the treatment. He now lives in the shelter for the homeless. So we know each other.

Just like other homeless people, he didn’t think he needed anything. But once he mentioned to me he needed eye glasses. His voice hesitated a bit, he looked down, and it appeared like he thought such a request was just a dream. Too much to hope for? It was as if his wish were known by me only.

I submitted an application for him to a program that is supposed to provide a free eye examination and glasses. Three months later, I phoned to ask what was up with the appointment but they told me there was a cash flow problem until late summer.

Steve showed disappointment, thanked me and started to walk away. I said, “Hold on, I will figure out a way to get you an eye examination and glasses.” His face lit up a tiny bit. He had seen some of the things I have done for other people in our shelter and to me it looked like he might have a line of hope.

I took a picture of him and posted his picture and his story in the Twitter. In about 4 days, eight people from around the world donated $25 each and one person donated $40 and I made up the rest to get him an eye exam and glasses.

Steve picked up his glasses on Wednesday: May 11th, 2018. Today Steve has returned to a previous job he had in a nearby car wash. Because he now has glasses he will be able to see what he is doing while cleaning the vehicles. He is starting a second job at a pet center next week!

A. The program was closed three months ago.

B. The author might be a volunteer in the shelter.

C. Steve got $240 in total from kind-hearted people.

D. Steve used to work as a salesman in a car factory.

27The best title for the passage is probably ______.

A. Money can sometimes talk B. Two heads are better than one

C. Small help can really count D. God helps those who help themselves

C

Last year I ruined my summer vacation by bringing along a modern convenience that was too convenient for my own good: the iPad. Instead of looking at nature, I checked my email. Instead of paddling a small boat, I followed my Twitter feed (推特简讯). Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning. I was behaving as if I were still in the office. My body was on vacation but my head wasn’t.

So this year I made up my mind to try something different: withdrawal (退出) from the Internet. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, since I’m bad at self-control. But I was determined. I started by giving the iPad to my wife.

The cellphone signal at our house was worse than in the past, making my attempts at cheating an experience in frustration . I was trapped, forced to go through with my plan. Largely cut off from e-mail, Twitter and my favorite newspaper websites, I had few ways to connect to the world except for radio and how much radio can one listen to, really? I had to do what I had planned to all along: read books.

This experience has had a happy ending. With determination and the strong support of my wife, I won in my vacation struggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I, not the iPad, that was the problem. I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “ I don’t need it,” I said.

However, as we return to post -vacation life, a harder test begins: Can I continue when I’m back at work? There are times when the need to know what’s being said right now is great. And I have no intention of giving up my convenience completely. But I hope to resist the temptation (诱惑) to check my e-mail every five minutes, which leads to checking my Twitter feed and a website or two.

I think a vacation is supposed to help you reset your brain to become more productive. Here I hope this one worked.

28. What do we know about the author’s last summer vacation

A. He was determined to enjoy the beautiful view.

B. He felt satisfied that he had stuck to his usual timetable.

C. He hated himself for acting as if he were at work on vacation.

D. His iPad ruined his plan of finishing a great novel.

29. What did the author do to keep away from the Internet this year

A. He cut off his cellphone signal.

B. He handed his iPad to his wife.

C. He refused to cheat in his house.

D. He listened to the radio most of the time.

30. When back at work, the author will probably choose to_______.

A. continue to read more and more books.

B. stay away from the Internet for ever.

C. stop checking what is being said right now completely.

D. keep control of when and how to use the Internet.

31. What is the author’s opinion of a great vacation in the passage

A. A vacation means a change of pace to make one more creative.

B. A vacation is a period of time to do whatever one wished to.

C. A vacation is having nothing to do but read all day.

D. A vacation proves that a life of pleasure is overvalued.

To develop one’s taste in Englishthe most effective way is to read English books extensively. However, one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate booksespecially as a beginner.I would like to share some of my experience.

My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudicerecommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But I had great difficulty in understanding the novellet alone enjoying it. It’s not the vocabulary that troubled mebut rather the way Austen constructs sentencesand her way of thinkingwhich seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel Farewell to Arms. I particularly liked his brief and lively style. So my first suggestion isas a beginner, you’d better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones.

Howeverreading novels is not the only way to improve your English. English essays can at once inform youentertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the unique sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy(哲理) within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion—essays are indispensable.

Never follow other’s opinions blindlyhowever famous or influential the person might be. As a saying goesone man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mindwe are sure to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.

32. What made the author’s first English novel hard to understand?

A. Complex conversations. B. Not knowing the social background.

C. The old-fashioned vocabulary. D. Sentences and Austen’s thinking pattern.

33. Which can best replace the underlined word“ indispensable”?

A. necessary B. challenging C. related D. boring

34. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?

A. Choose interesting books.

B. Read books of good quality.

C. Don’t be easily affected by other’s choices.

D. Compare the prices of books before buying.

35. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

A. Give comments on literature works.

B. Tell beginners how to choose English books.

C. Encourage people to read more English books.

D. Recommend first-class books to English learners.

   第二节 (5小题;每小题2, 满分10)

根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Do you have a spare room in your house? Do you like to share your driveway in front of your garage with others?   36    Many people are benefiting from this new business of renting.

Perhaps the best-known example of a company in this field is Airbnb-an American web business which allows you to rent out your spare room to holidaymakers. It says it operates in 34,000 cities and it has 800,000 listings of rooms and apartments.   37

A British company is doing something with parking spaces. Just Park's founder, Anthony Eskinazi, says, “When I had the original idea, I spotted a driveway close to a sports stadium. It would have been so convenient if I could have just parked in that driveway rather than in a commercial car park.”  38    Around 20,000 people have advertised their spaces on the website, and he says around half a million drivers use it.

39  They are people who run things like traditional hotels and commercial car parks. They are afraid of ending up losing money.

40  Regulations for these new businesses are unclear. How will renting out your driveway affect your neighbor? Because this is a new business world, those rules aren't there yet.

A. They seem to have occupied the majority of the market.

B. Both of these can help you make money.

C. And there is another problem.

D. And his great idea has proved a success.

E. But the new business of renting has its competitors.

F. There are many ways to earn money.

G. A commercial car park is inconvenient.

Several days ago when I went shopping in New York I saw an old woman crossed the street with a heavy bag in her hand. In that moment, the American boy was standing nearby. I thought the boy will help the old lady, and to my surprise, he did nothing. This seemed very strangely to me.

Later my roommate explained the boy behavior to me. Americans place emphasis on independence. If the boy offered to help her, the old woman would have felt that she was considered old and weak. What the boy did it allowed her to keep her independence, that was more important to her than the discomfort of carrying a heavy load.
