I have an interest in photography and follow many photography Instagram accounts. Just like me, a friend of mine has a similar interest. The only difference is that he is a traveller and has taken hundreds of beautiful photos. He is really talented.
Having returned from one trip, he shared some of his latest photos. Blown away by the images, I asked him why he hadn’t started his own Instagram account of shots.

But the next girl walked up to the microphone and actually said a speech. I just stared at her in complete disbelief. No one seemed to be judging her for doing something different. In fact, they applauded louder for her than any other girl.
From then on, I never let fear and doubt rule my decisions. Whatever happens, I always take chances and have a try.

Some parents can’t resist the strong desire to help their children play hooky (逃学) for a trip. Five-year-old Erica and her siblings Alex, 9, and Kate, 12, missed school in Denver on Aug. 21, 2017. Their father Mr. Reed took them on a camping trip to Halsey to see the solar eclipse (日食). Kate had told her teachers she’d be absent and Mr. Reed let Erica’s and Alex’s teachers know, too. But he didn’t ask for permission.
Mr. Reed has loved astronomy since seeing Neil Armstrong walk on the moon on his sixth birthday. He says, “I want my own kids to have a similar kind of wonderment and hope about future discoveries.”
Parents often dream of traveling with their children to teach them about science, geography and culture. Many teachers support them, as the Reed children’s teachers did. Other teachers were angry about the extra work.
Teacher Amanda says she feels frustrated when parents take students out of school for family trips. If she sends homework, she finds it’s often returned incomplete or incorrect, because the absent student didn’t hear her explanation in class. Some students suffer anxiety as they struggle to catch up. Research shows that students who are absent often, for any reason—excused or unexcused—performed more poorly in school.
Garrick agreed to miss five days of school for the Antarctic trip last year as a senior high school student, however. Managing the homework was a challenge, but it helped him gain time management skills. “And the trip is worth the effort,” he says, “sparking his interest in international relations. You can’t really put a price on changing your world view,” Garrick says. “That’s what travel has done for me. It has changed how I think about things.”

Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic (逻辑) behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.”
Try this experiment. Explain how you’ll increase your brain power, even if you have no idea right now. Just start with anything, and create an explanation. For example, start with “I’ll learn chess,” or “I’ll read an article on the mind every week.” Explain how that will help. You’ll be surprised how often this becomes a workable plan, and if you actually do this, you’ll have a better understanding of your brain from now.
Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success.
Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.
Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.

A day in the life of 18-year-old David Lanster is full of typical teenage stuff: school, baseball practice, homework. And then he starts cooking.
“Some nights I’m up until I am making pies, or even later if we’re braising (蒸) beef,” said the student at Ransom Everglades High School in Florida, US.
For the past year, Lanster and Kelly Moran, his classmate, have been hosting fancy dinner parties at Lanster’s parents’ home. Their meals have 17 courses and are all made by them.
Their guests used to give them gifts to thank them, until the pair decided to do something nice for charity (慈善).
“We got some really great Miami Heat tickets, a nice watch, and many kitchen gadgets (小物件),” Lanster said. “But we wanted to make this something positive for people other than us.”
