8. sensation and perception
● Sensation and Perception
1. Sensation
- The relationship between physical stimulation and its psychology effect
2. Perception
- How we recognize, interpret and organized our sensation
3. Sensory adaption & Sensory habituation
● Thresholds
1. Absolute Thresholds
- The minimal amount of stimulation needed to detect a stimulus and cause the neuron fire 50% of the time.
2. Differential thresold
- The smallest amount of change needed in a stimulus before we detect a change
3. Terminal threshold
- The upper limit above which the stimuli can no longer be perceived.
4. Weber’s law
- The law states that a stimulus needs to be increased by a constant fraction of its original value in order to noticed as noticeable different.
- K (The constant fraction)= I 挨( increase in intensity needed for jnd)/I挨(original intensity)
5. Subliminal Perception
- A form of preconscious processing that occurs when we are presented with stimuli so rapidly that we’re not consciously aware of them.
6. Tip of the tongue phenomenon
- We try to recall sth that we already know that is available but not easily accessible to consciousness.
7. J.A. Swet’s Theory of Signal Detection (TSD)
- The subjects detect stimuli not only because they can but also they want to.
- Response:
1) False Alarm: You detect a stimulus that is not there
2) Hit: Correctly sensing a stimulus
3) Miss: Failing to detect a present stimulus
4) Correct rejection: rightly stating that no stimulus exists
False Alarm
Hit
Miss
● Visual sensation process
1. 顺序
- 光线从Cornea(角膜)进入眼中。
- 穿过pupil(瞳孔)
- Iris(虹膜)打开,接受光线。
- 直至lens。
- 进入Retina。
- Retina附近的cones(负责多颜色)和rods(负责黑白色)负责后续处理工作。
3. Opponent Process Theory (对立学说)
- It suggests that 2 types of color-sensitive cells exist: cones that respond to blue-yellow colors and cones that respond to red-green.
4. After image
● Auditory Mechanisms
- External ear: (包括器官)External auditory canal, tympanic.(eardrum)
- Middle ear:Malleus (Hammer),Incus(Anvil), Stapes(Stirrup), oval window.
- Internal ear:semicircular canals, Cochlea, auditory nerve.
4. Place theory &Frequency Theory
5. Conduction Deaf &Nerve deaf
- Conduction Deaf
- Nerve Deaf
● Gustation
- Taste buds are located on Papillae, which are the bumps you can see on your tongue. Humans distinguish five basic tastes: Sweet, bitter, sour, salty and the recently discovered umami.
● Olfaction
- Receptor cells are linked to the olfactory bulb.
● Body position senses
1. Vestibular Senses
- Our vestibular sense tells us about how our body is oriented is space.
2. Kinesthetic Sense 动觉
- Kinesthetic Sense gives us feedback about the position and orientation of specific body parts.
3. Gate-Control Theory
● Senses and Associated Receptors
1. Energy Senses
- Vision(Rods,Cones)
- Hearing (Hair cells connected to the organ of Corti)
- Touch (Temperature,pressure,pain nerve endings)
2. Chemical Senses
- Taste (Papillae)
- Smell(Olfactory bulb)
3. Body position senses
- Vestibular sense (semicircular canals in inner ear)
Kinesthetic sense (receptors in muscles and joints)
● Attention
- The processing through cognition of a selection portion of the massive informative incoming from the sense and contained in memory.
1. Selective attention(选择性注意)
- We try to attend one thing while ignoring another.
2. Filter Theory(过滤定律)
3. Attention Resource Theory
4. Divided theory
● Perceptual processes
- how our mind interprets environmental l stimuli.
1. Bottom-up Processing
- Sensation
- Recognition of an object by breaking it down into its component parts.
2. Top-Down processing
- Perception
- When the brain Labels a particular stimulus or experience.
3. Gestalt Rules(这个比较重要,要背的)
- Principles that govern how we perceive groups of objects.
1. Proximity: the tendency to see objects near to each other as forming groups.
2. Continuity: the tendency to perceive preferentially fluid or continuous forms, rather than jagged or irregular ones.
3. Similarity: the tendency to prefer to group like objects together.
4. Closure: the tendency preferentially to “close up” objects that are not complete.
5. Symmetry: the tendency to perceive preferentially forms that make up mirror images.
● Constancy
1. Size Constancy
- We keep a constant size in mind for an object and know that it does not grow or shrink in size as it moves closer or farther away.
2. Shape Constancy
- Objects viewed from different angles will produce different shapes on our retinas, but we still know the shape of an object remains constant.
3. Brightness constancy
- We perceive objects as being a constant color even as the light reflecting off the object changes.
● Visual perception
1. Monocular Depth Cues
1) Relative Size:
7) Motion parallax:
2. Binocular Depth Cues
1) Binocular Convergence:
2) Binocular Disparity:
3. Perceived Motion
- Our brains are able to detect how fast images move across out retinas and to take into account our own movement.
- EX:stroboscopic effect
4. Effect of Culture on perception
- Research indicates that some of the perceptual rules psychologists once thought were innate are actually learned.
- Cross cultural research demonstrates that some basic perceptual sets are learned from our culture.
