Dictionaries are not closed books. There is still plenty of room for more words in these great vocabulary authorities. New words are continually being created and added to our language. And many of today’s word experts can credit a famous mathematician with the creation of the method by which they develop many new words. The mathematician was an Englishman named Charles L.Dodgson. In addition to working with figures, Dodgson wrote books. His imaginative stories and poems have made Dodgson beloved to generartions of readers. We know him, however, not by the name of Dodgson but by his pen name, Lewis Carroll.

Lewis Carroll has delighted countless readers, young and old, with Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and numerous poems. In these works, Carroll developed dozens of nonsensical words such as chortleand galumph. Many of these words are combined naturally with more common words in the English language. Carroll referred to his made-up words as portmanteau words, named after a kind of leather suitcase that opens into two compartments. The name was well suited, because most of Carroll’s words had two compartments. Rather than being entirely fabricated(虚构), they were usually made from the combined parts of two different words. A snark, for example, clearly came from a snake and a shark.

Although Carroll died long ago, his technique continues to be used today. We clearly see his influence in such words as smog, brunch, and guesstimate.

A snake handler who cheated(逃脱) dead after being badly bitten by a snake is now teaching Australians how to survive in that case. Neville Bums has been bitten twelve times during his long work with the snakes, and use all his experience to give lectures to people at the risk of meeting a snake unexpectedly.

Australia is home to most of the world’s most deadly snakes. So Neville teaches them how to handle such close unexpected experience. There was a time when we did not talk with each other.

A few months ago, I heard that my 84-year-old dad was in poor health. When he called and asked whether I could move from Colorado back to Tennessee to help him, I knew he was seriously ill. I am his only child and so it was time to meet my father’s requirement.

Two weeks after moving back, we bought a boat and started fishing again. Fishing was one of the few things that we did while I was young and that we both enjoyed. It is stranger but true that as we are fishing we are able to talk about things that we have never talked about before. Fishing has been healing the old wounds that have kept us apart.

It is not important how many fish we catch. It is about enjoying the relationship that we have not bad for years. I’m 62 and he is 84. When we are on the lake fishing, it is like enjoying life. It is far better to find a way to put the unhappy past behind. I am so lucky to spend the happy time with my father in his last years. Now my heart is filled with love. A smile always graces my lips.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Every year, especially during the spring and early summer, the live s of many young animals are disrupted. People may attempt to save these animals, and more often than not, the mother is nearby.

Young rabbits found at a nest site do not need to be rescued. The mother rabbit will not return as long as a person is standing near the nest site. If you’ve kicked open a nest, just replace the top of the nest, and leave. The mother will return and care for the young. Cottontail rabbits leave their young hours while eating, but they do return to nurse the young, until the young are old enough to survive on their own. Young rabbits are ready to leave the nest at three to four weeks of age when their eyes are open and their bodies are furry.

Young birds are sometimes found on the ground near a nest. When this happens, the best thing to do is to put bird carefully back into the nest. Don’t worry about getting your scent on the bird; it will not affect the mother’s care. If you can’t reach the nest, leave the bird on the ground. Every bird alive today has spent a few precarious days on the ground while learning to fly. The best thing you can do during this time of year to protect young wildlife is to keep cats indoors.

When young raccoons are found out alone, it is likely they are merely exploring and their mother is nearby. They are probably old enough to be fully capable of climbing back up a tree to their den. If they were too young to climb, the mother would carry them back.

If you find a young fawn laying alone, leave it there. The mother comes back several times each day to nurse the fawn. If they you’ve already picked the fawn up and brought it home, put it back. Even one or two days after removal from the wild, fawns have been successfully returned with their mothers, by returning them to the place where they were found.
