"An Inconvenient Truth"

By Nadia, Happening UK correspondent

Al Gore was campaigning to become the President of the U.S.A at the same time as President Bush and he only lost the election by a small number of votes. He has always been interested in the environment and has been doing talks around the world about how we are damaging it and what we all need to do to stop and save the planet before it is too late.

He made a film in 2006 about the ways we are harming the Earth. I know it sounds really boring - that's what I thought too, but WOW it was fantastic!! It was a scary film because Al Gore made it clear that the way we are living is affecting our environment very badly and in around 50 years' time, most of the land on our planet could be flooded!

The main problem we have is called global warming. This happens when we burn fuels (like petrol) to get energy. The energy is really good because it can be used to drive cars and fly planes, but when we burn fuel, carbon dioxide gas is also produced. The gas is causing the planet to heat up too much and ice at the North Pole has been melting! When the ice melts, it turns into water and mixes with the sea - the sea level rises - and we get flooding, lots and lots of flooding!

It is very scary that if we don't stop burning fuels so much, our land could all disappear under water! Another effect of global warming is the crazy weather we have been having. I don't know if you have noticed, but it has actually been getting warmer and snowing less. Even some ski resorts that always get snow in their area have complained that they don't any more and have to get snow from the high mountains for people to ski on!

Another effect is that we are having more natural disasters. Hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes are happening more often around the world because of this unnatural weather. It is a very serious problem.

A way we can try to slow down global warming is by burning less fuel. We can recycle and use other forms of energy, like electricity or wind turbines because these do not produce carbon dioxide gas. European countries like the UK and Italy have signed treaties to decrease the amount of carbon dioxide they produce - they understand how important the problem is. But the United States government has not promised to produce less gas even though it produces so much more than any of the other countries in the world! Some scientists advising the President of the U.S. are even saying that there is no such thing as global warming! I think it's really obvious this is not true and that the U.S government needs to start taking the problem more seriously.

It is really important we all do something to save our planet from disaster. We might not live to see the horrible effects of global warming, but the next generation definitely will, and then it will be too late to stop it. The title of Al Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth" sums up the situation well - global warming is not something we want to hear about, but it's happening!
