Most of us feel exhausted after working for at least eight hours a day, five days a week. When we get home, we watch at least two episodes on Netflix because it's damn well-deserved and the only time we get to "relax" before we go to sleep.

Wake up and repeat. And repeat and repeat and repeat. No wonder you feel tired.

So how do you get out of this vicious cycle? How do you restart your life? Hint: NOT by adding something new to your life. But by making sure your body is ready and able to actually handle new hobbies.

The first 3 things to check to make sure you have right:

1. YOUR MINDSET

心态

"Oh man, another one of these self-improvement things. I hope I can do it, but I've tried these things before, and I just never stick with it."

This was something I used to say to myself every time I try to start something new for myself. There's a fear-driven side of your brain which tells you, "You can't do this."

What can you do? Well, the tip here is to talk to yourself like you're talking to a friend, or a coworker, or a child who is being told by a bully they can't do something they want to try. So the next time you try something new, be kind to yourself like you would be kind to others. You are your own worst critic. But you can also be your staunch defender. Stand up for yourself against yourself.

2. YOUR SLEEP

Without sufficient sleep, we're basically going through the day drunk. This means tiredness, difficulty to respond quickly and smartly to anything that comes up.

The sleeping hours needed for an average adult ranges from 7 to 9 hours. Just keep in mind that your body is not wired in the same way your computer is. You cannot have instantaneous change. Let yourself have at least 1 to 2 weeks minimum to start sleeping a little earlier regularly. And this sort of timeline is meant for small changes, like 15 minutes to 30 minutes earlier than your current sleeping schedule.

But this is an absolutely must. Without sleep, your body and mind is weak, slow, and definitely not energetic enough to accommodate any new activities you want to do.

3. YOUR FOOD

食物

If you are looking at what you eat for the reason to feel energized, then the general rules are:

1) Eat when you're hungry. Don't eat when you're not.

2) Be mindful when you eat. Chew at least 20 times. Let yourself taste and digest your food.

3) Don't do three things at once when you're eating. Your body wasn't made for that.

4) Preferably, eat "real" food. Eat food your great-grandmother would realize as food.

Don't let your days roll by in the continual humdrum. Start by re-examining these key habits in your life already to build a body that can start doing things you want.

In most countries, sleeping on the job isn't just frowned upon, it may get you fired.

But in Japan, napping in the office is common and culturally accepted. And in fact, it is often seen as a subtle sign of diligence: You must be working yourself to exhaustion.

The word for it is "inemuri". It is often translated as "sleeping on duty", but Dr Brigitte Steger, a senior lecturer in Japanese studies at www.edu800.cn Downing College, Cambridge, who has written a book on the topic, says it would be more accurate to render it as "sleeping while present".

That, she said, captures Japan's approach to time, where it's seen as possible to do multiple things simultaneously, if at a lower intensity.

So you can get credit for attending that boring quarterly sales meeting while also dreaming of a beach vacation.

Inemuri is most prevalent among more senior employees in white-collar professions, Dr Steger said. Junior employees tend to want to stay awake all day and be seen as energetic, and workers on assembly lines can't just nod off.

Both sexes indulge in inemuri, but women are more likely to be criticised for it, especially if they sleep in a position that is considered unbecoming, Dr Steger said.

Inemuri has been practised in Japan for at least 1,000 years, and it is not restricted to the workplace. People may nap in department stores, cafes, restaurants or even a snug spot on a busy city sidewalk.

"It's very unlikely, if you are sleeping on a train, that someone would try to rob you," said Dr Theodore C Bestor, a professor of social anthropology at Harvard University.

Doctors at Imperial College hospitals will soon be monitoring the health of patients with an app developed by Google-backed AI firm DeepMind.

The Streams app gathers information about key physiological measurers and warns when readings are high or low. Streams came from a deal with London's Royal Free hospital that gave Google access to 1.6 million patient records.

Medical professionals at three London hospitals, St Mary's, Hammersmith and Charing Cross, will get updates and alerts on their smartphones about patients of a sudden deterioration in their health.

St Mary'sHammersmithCharing Cross

The alerts and updates will be derived from blood tests and other regularly administered measures of an individual's condition.

As well as data from medical checks, the Streams alerts and updates will draw on electronic patient records held at the hospitals.

An earlier collaboration between DeepMind and London's Royal Free NHS Trust has proved controversial because it involved the firm getting access to millions of patient records. DeepMind said it needed the data to help its software recognise various medical conditions.

Critics said DeepMind needed to be more open about the reasons if it wanted the data.

Subway passengers in some Chinese cities are not standing on the right side of escalators and sparing the left side for those to walk through.

An earlier report hit the Internet saying that Nanjing city in eastern China only requires subway passengers to stand firm and hold the handrail rather than to stand on the right side as it did formerly.

The Nanjing Subway Group explained on their Weibo account that it found 95 percent of escalators were seriously worn on the right side.

Shi Dajiang from the city's public security bureau agreed that standing on the right side will speed up the abrasion of the escalator, shorten the service life and increase risk of breakdown.

Station staff also said the escalator step is 21 centimeters in height, six centimeters higher than the height of the public stairs. It is dangerous to walk on the operating escalators.

Guangzhou canceled the standard to stand on the right side of escalator about ten years ago. Ye Zichuan from the Guangzhou subway publicity department said they have investigated escalator accidents, finding that more than 90 percent of the accidents were caused by passengers walking through the escalator.

But some netizens support the international standard to stand on the right side of the escalator, saying the standard is popular in many countries and there are few escalator accidents in those countries.

Other netizens argue that the international standard is not necessarily feasible in China. With the large population and the crowded rush hours in big cities, they say standing on the right side and allowing walk-through traffic on the left doesn't fit in China.

People in southern Chinese cities are showing a growing enthusiasm for skiing equipment, with five southern cities listed among the top 10 purchasers of skiing-related products in China this year, according to statistics from Amazon China.

The top 10 cities for purchases of skiing products are Beijing, Shenyang, Tianjin, Jinan, Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan, Nanjing, Guangzhou and Xi'an.

And despite the fact that it rarely snows in southern China, for the first time, five southern cities - Guangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan, Chengdu and Shanghai - were ranked among the top 10 purchasers of skiing equipment, showing that interest in skiing products from consumers is heating up in that part of the country.

Winter sports have thrived in China since Beijing and Zhangjiakou secured the 2022 Winter Olympic bid.

Following President Xi Jinping's call to develop winter sports, Beijing set a target to involve 300 million people in skating and skiing sports in the runup to the Winter Olympics.

He Wenyi, executive director of the China Sports Research Center, said: "The huge market potential of skiing sports indicates that ski jiujiu360.comresort operators can consider running the resorts all year round, and local manufacturers should consider increasing their supplies of high-end skiing equipment in the home market."

A ceremony has taken place in northeastern China to mark the beginning of a bridge project linking China and Russia.

Construction is now getting underway on a 1.3-kilometer long bridge, which will connect a Chinese border town in Heilongjiang with a Russian community on the other side of the Heilong.

Both the Chinese and Russian sides say the new bridge will bring economic benefits on both sides of the "Black Dragon."

Governor of Russia's Amur Region, Andrey Kozlov, says the new bridge project will also help cross-border exchanges.

"The infrastructure in transportation is one of our priorities. Both heads of state of our two countries are very supportive of this kind of work in the border areas. The bridge, once completed, will play an important role not only in the economy, but also in exchanges in various fields."

Local officials in the Chinese border city of Heihe say the project is going to help elevate a major bottle-neck in cross-border trade.

Around 700-thousand people and 300-thousand tons of goods enter or exit China via Heihe every year. Passenger flows are to double, and cargo volumes increase by 10-fold, once the project is complete.

It's also part of a trilateral economic corridor linking China, Russia and Mongolia.

The bridge project, proposed 28-years ago, is expected to be finished in October of 2019.

On Jan 5, 2017, people will be able to get free "Laba" porridge at many temples like Yonghegong Lama Temple in Beijing.

Otherwise, people could also enjoy the porridge at those time-honored restaurants like Huguosi Snacks, Tongheju Restaurant, Quyuan Restaurant and Makai Restaurant.

It is a way of celebrating the Laba Festival, or Laba Rice Porridge Festival, one of the traditional Chinese festivals on the eighth day of the 12th month of lunar calendar.

According to the Buddhist belief that on this day Sakyamuni became the Buddha thousands years ago, and that is why Buddhist temples observe this festival.

That is where the Laba Festival comes from.

"La", a Chinese character, is closely associated with the meaning of offering sacrifices to gods or ancestors, while "Ba" means the number of eight.

It’s customary on this day to drink the special porridge, usually stewed of at least eight ingredients.

With rice as the main ingredient, this porridge may well contain ingredients like broad beans, red beans, mung beans, red dates, peanuts, chest nuts, both tasty and nutritious.

This tradition of making Laba porridge could be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), generously extolling the significance of diligence and thrift.

Apart from the porridge, there are also traditions of making Laba garlic and Laba noodles in some parts of North China.

Perhaps, the most important meaning of Laba is its loud reminding or counting-down of days to the most important Chinese festival -- the Spring Festival. Laba is here, the Spring Festival is at the corner.
