A

I was a medical student. To gather data for my paper, I started visiting patients at Dr Sardjito Hospital, where I would review the medical records of patients and then interview them.

One evening, I was in a ward, desperately hunting for the final three patients I needed to complete my study. Holding a patient questionnaire, I walked towards a room. A patient called Ms A was lying in bed, clearly still weak. There were no relatives or friends with her. Even the bed beside her was empty. I sat down on a chair next to her bed, and in a low voice I introduced myself and asked if I could gather some additional information from her. She agreed. After I finished, I prepared to leave. Before I could stand up, Ms A said, I haven’t seen you here before, doctor. Are you new? Not really, Madam. It’s just that I don’t come here every day, I replied. Ms A started talking about herself. She shared her difficulties and sufferings, talked about her husband, who was killed in a car accident, and that she struggled to earn money. All I did was nod my head as a way of showing my sympathy.

Without realizing it, I had begun holding Ms A’s hand. Finally, Ms A stopped talking. I’m very sorry for keeping you here to listen to my problem, but I feel relieved now. I had no one to pour out my problems to. Tears fell from the corner of her eyes. Finally, I knew what to say. It’s OK, Madam. It’s part of my duty. I stood up and waved goodbye. A few days later, when I returned to the ward, I discovered Ms A had left the hospital as her condition had improved.

Ms A taught me the most important lessons a doctor can learn. Sometimes patients do not need expensive medicine. They just need someone with the patience and willingness to lend an ear and spare a little of their time.

59. Ms A tended to think that _________.

A. The author was kind and patient enough to share her sufferings

B. Other doctors treated her in a cold way

C. She shouldn’t talk about her difficulties to doctors

D. Doctors ought to learn how to cure her psychological problems

60. What conclusion did the author draw after interviewing Ms A?

A. A doctor must learn how to treat each patient equally.

B. Her psychological treatment made Ms A recover quickly.

C. Listening is sometimes the best thing a doctor can do for a patient.

D. It is the doctors’ duty to receive whatever patients say.

On Wednesday evening in New York, Apple broke the news that Steve Jobs had died. Since then, praise and respect have poured over the world like rain. He changed industries, redefined business models, fused (融合)technology and art. People are comparing him to Thomas Edison, Walt Disney and Leonardo da Vinci, and saying it will be a very long time before the world sees the likes of Steve Jobs again.

After all, there are other brilliant marketers, designers and business people. Many of them have studied Steve Jobs, tried to absorb his methods and his philosophy. Surely they can recreate some of his success. But nobody ever does, even when they copy his moves down.

So how did he become a visionary who changed every business he touched? Actually, he has given us clues all along. The story of Steve Jobs boils down to this: Don’t go with the flow. If Mr. Jobs saw something that could be made better, smarter or more beautiful, nothing else mattered.

Apple has attained its current astonishing levels of influence and success because it is sensitive. It is incredibly focused. It has had amazingly few failures. And that is because Mr. Jobs didn’t buy into focus groups, groupthink or decision by a committee. At its core(核心),Apple existed to carry out his vision. He focused on every button and every corner .He lost sleep over the cardboard of the packaging and the color of the power cord.

He wanted to sell a smart phone that had no keyboard, when physical keys were what had made BlackBerry the most popular smart phone at the time. Eventually, of course, most people realized that he was just doing that Steve Jobs thing again: being ahead of his time.

Mr. Jobs is gone. Everyone who knew him feels that sorrow. But the ripple(涟漪)of that loss will widen in the days, weeks and years to come: to the people in the industries he changed.

61. The writer tends to think that _____.

A. Steve Jobs is greater than Thomas Edison.

B. Steve Jobs combined technology with art

C. Steve Jobs’ methods can’t be absorbed by others

D. another Steve Jobs will appear before long

62. Which of the following best describes Steve Jobs?

A. He is a person who has a mind of his own.

B. He insists on working for his own company.

C. He is good at giving people clues all the time.

63. Apple has obtained great success because_____.

A. its staff must be much cleverer than others’.

B. it has been the focus of consumers worldwide.

A. preferred products made with simple designs

B. got his products designed ahead of his time.

65. What can we infer from the text?

A Steve Jobs may never be imitated or be copied.

Part Writing (45 points)

Section A (10 points): Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is goodmost would admit that their spoken English is poorHowevertheir spoken English does not have to remain poor! I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English. Firstthey fail to find suitable words to express themselves as a result of a limited vocabulary, obviously the better answer is to expand (扩大) their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that in speaking your aim is FLUENCY,(流畅) NOT ACCURACY(准确). You want to get your message across to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense.

The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing was necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive(反应性的) language learners instead of proactive(主动的) ones. Instead of actively taking opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

Section B

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable (一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don't have to bring their own. But, if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring your own things. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less disposable things.

Many disposable things are made of plastic, not easy to rot away. People throw them away after using them only once. It is a waste of natural resources and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.

At home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to use daily necessities (日用品)once more. Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen, use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.

81. Please list at least 4 disposable things mentioned in the passage.

Living alone or Living with Roommates

At the beginning of the new term, there appears a heated discussion among us as to whether we should live off campus or live together with other roommates in the students’ dormitory. Opinions vary from person to person.

Those who are in favor of living alone maintain that it is very convenient to live by themselves. They can enjoy complete freedom in a room of their own. They can have their own timetable without disturbing others. But others argue that living with roommates has attractions of its own. With several students sharing the same room, each person’s experience can be enriched. They can learn a lot from talking to each other. Moreover, by learning to tolerate the differences between them, they can become more mature.

As far as I’m concerned, I prefer to live with roommates because I love the scene of belongs. Besides, living on campus can help me save a lot of time on the way between dwelling and school, which means I can concentrate more time and energy on my study.
