When I was in elementary and middle school, my mother would drop me off in the morning and pick me up at the end of the day, always waiting, right on time, in the front seat of her green car on the side of the road in front of our school. I would climb into the passenger side and ask her what was for supper. Sometimes it would be catfish I didn’t love or perhaps a whole chicken and I would sigh with disappointment. On more exciting afternoons, she’d tell me she was roasting pork tenderloin to serve with homemade apple sauce. In my luckiest moments, she spent the entire day

preparing her famous homemade spaghetti and meatballs my brother and I wanted all year round. Growing up with a stay-at-home mom was something I took for granted as a kid and teenager.I couldn’t care less that she was the last person I saw before school started and the first person I talked to when it was over. I barely noticed that she paid all the bills, took our dogs to the vet, ensured we made it to the dentist every six months and that we had all our school materials and summer camp supplies exactly when we needed them.

To find fulfillment outside our family, she volunteered to work in the fundraising department at my brother’s school, freelanced(当自由作家)for a handful of magazines, guest-hosted a local talk radio show, and even wrote a book. We weren’t wealthy by any means, but we were comfortable enough so she could put all her energy into being the best mother she could be. Then I left for college and everything changed. My parents split up. My mother got a job at the front desk of her favorite yoga studio and became manager in a few weeks. At first, I felt a little uneasy. But gradually, as I continued to grow up, I began to see her as not only a mother, but a woman finding her way through the world, exploring its uncertainties and making mistakes and learning lessons just like me.

She still has the best qualities of being my mother. She still lets me sleep in her bed and wakes me up with vanilla tea each morning and tells me exactly what pills to take if I catch a cold.

I haven’t lost my mother, but I’ve gained a friend.

Schooling is not only about studying but also about having fun. Education is best offered if learning is made fun. It is students being not overburdened with the school curriculum and being able to devote enough time to the overall personality development that matter. It is thus important for school officials to encourage the active participation of students in sports. These activities at school act as a major part of school schedule and also help create an environment that is beneficial to the general growth and development of young minds. There are various sports and leisure activities that can be planned for school students.

Sports are an essential part of a school curriculum. In spite of the grade a student is studying in, sports are a must. And it is needless to state the importance of sports in school. They help in building up the much-needed team spirit among students. They help in educating a sportsman spirit in children and serve as an effective method to bring children together from different cultural background.

Gymnastics, swimming competitions, tennis and badminton tournaments, cricket and soccer matches and inter-class sports events can be organized in school. Sports enthusiasts can participate in these events, while those not participating can be a part of the cheering team. Kids are sure to enjoy activities like cycling, running races, skating and other fun games.

Wondering how schooling is associated with leisure activities? Well, you are mistaken if you believe that schooling is only about class assignments and homework. School education is much more than that. In fact, it is about helping the students learn the important lessons of life. It aims at their overall development which includes development moral values and principles in them.

Devoting their entire schedule to studies and examinations defeats the purpose of an effective school education. It is very important to include some leisure activities in the school’s weekly schedule.

Sports and leisure activities are about making fruitful use of time in a creative way. They are the best ways to find hidden talent, cultivate minds and encourage innovation. School years are the founding years of one’s life. They need to be filled with fun and excitement so that children have an ideal beginning to the “long journey” ahead.

46. What should school authorities do to make better education according to the author?

D. Know which sports are beneficial to students’ personal development.

47. The author suggests more sports and leisure activities for students because they are ________.

A. beneficial to children physically and mentally

B. beneficial to children’s future competitiveness

C. helpful for students to get on well with each other in sports

D. capable of freeing students from tiring school examinations

48. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us?

A. Leisure activities are necessary for schooling.

B. Examinations are meaningless to students’ studies.

C. Current schooling limits students’ overall development.

D. Schooling merely focuses on class assignment and homework.

49. How can we cultivate students’ hidden talents?

A. By setting more examinations and tests.

B. By providing more spare time for them.

C. By offering them more happiness at school.

D. By encouraging them to participate in sports.

50. We learn from the text that the author puts stress on _________.

A. school curriculum

B. children’s physical health

C. sports and leisure activities

D. children’s personal spirit

Facebook Messenger wants you to know a little more about that person who messages you for the first time. Getting messages from someone you don’t know can be a pretty intimidating experience. How did they find you? Why did they reach out?

To make new connections less jarring (不和谐的), Facebook Messenger is introducing a new feature that gives you bits of information about someone messaging you for the first time, whether the person is one of your Facebook friends or not. The Messenger team is rolling it out to IOS and Android users in the U.S., UK, France and India over the next few weeks.

“It is a way to give you more context (背景) about new conversations in Messenger,” a

Facebook spokesperson told Mashable. When someone messages you for the first time, Messenger chooses bits of information from their Facebook profile (简况), like what their job is, which town or city they live in, and who your common friends are (if you have any), then displays that info above their first message, alongside their profile name and photo.

The new feature is similar to one offered in Hello, the app Facebook quietly rolled out in April, which gives Android smartphone owners bits of information about the person on the other end of the line.

The feature shows information Facebook thinks will prove most useful, while respecting both users’ privacy settings. That’s key, especially if you and other person aren’t actually friends on

Facebook --- in which case, only publicly available information on your profile is used.

It’s a small feature in the big scheme of things for Messenger but one that makes sense.

Facebook already sits on data from 1.44 billion active monthly users, so why not use some of their publicly available information to give a little context about new folks who message you? And of course, if the feature helps improve Messenger’s user engagement --- the more friends you message, the more time you spend on the service --- it’s a win-win.

51. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Some new features of Facebook Messenger.

B. Best ways to make more friends

C. Facebook Messenger now gives context about the people contacting you first.

D. Be careful of the person who messages you for the first time on Messenger.

52. What does the underlined word “intimidating” probably mean in Paragraph 1?

A. Exciting. B. Frightening. C. Satisfying. D. Interesting.

53. What can Hello offer to the users?

A. Information of the person who messages you.

B. Information of all Android smartphone owners.

C. Information of the person who calls you.

D. Information of the app Hello.

54. We can know from the passage that _________.

A. when someone messages you first, their profession will be above the message

B. the new feature of Facebook Messenger will not reveal user’s private information

C. the more time you spend messaging strange people, the more friends you can make

D. if you and other person aren’t actually friends on Facebook, you won’t receive his message

55. What’s the author’s attitude to the new feature of Messenger?

A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain.

II 卷(选择题,共35 分)

第四部分:写作

第一节:阅读表达(共5 小题;每小题2 分,满分10 分)

阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

Poisonous chemicals produced by oil spills and air pollution have a new enemy: Green plants. These pollutants often contain a class of chemicals known as PAHs. Such chemicals have been linked to many health problems. But researchers now have developed plants that can digest PAHs.

Cleaning up a poisoned site tends to be quite costly. It often involves digging up the dirt or treating it with expensive chemicals. The United States spends billions of dollars every year on such cleanup efforts. Cleaning up those places with plants, however, could cost only about one tenth as much, which is a top quality of green plants. Bacteria can digest pollutants and leave harmless substances behind. Engineers have even begun using some kinds of bacteria to help clean up oil spills in seawater. However, monitoring the progress of these microbes(微生物) can be difficult, so is finding out how much pollution remains behind.

Quan-Hong Yao is an agricultural scientist in China. He and his team developed plants that could do the same thing those microbes do. They used special techniques to change the plants to produce chemicals to break down a type of PAH.

Genes influence how a living thing looks and behaves. Scientists changed genes of some plants through genetic engineering. Yao’s group added four genes to rice plants and to a small flowering plant. The transferred genes came from a PAH-eating soil microbe. And their experiment worked.Once the plants adopted the microbe’s genes, they began producing the chemicals produced by bacteria, which broke down PAH. After 30 days, the plants removed up to half of the harmful chemicals in contaminated soil. The researchers reported their results on October 9 2014 in

Environmental Science & Technology.

“This is a big deal,” Christopher Reddy adds. He's an environmental chemist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, in Massachusetts, who once worked on the new study. “Success in the lab doesn't prove the plants will work as well in the real world.”

“There is still a long way to go before these gene-changed plants can be used outdoors,” Yao agrees. As a next step, he’ll be testing his plants in real-world situations.

decorative purposes. Of course, Chinese Kungfu, I think, will attract the most attention. I am sure

students will have a lot of fun once they get involved in learning it. There are also some lectures

on different aspects, introducing Chinese culture.

We hope the Week of China can not only offer foreign students a chance to have a better

understanding of China and Chinese culture but also promote our friendship.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Yours

Li Jin
