A

Tonight’s “Tech Live” tells the story of Gigabyte, a young kickboxer and virus writer. She can kick you in the pants and wipe your hard drive cleaner than a dog’s dinner plate.

“I’ll just shoot you from behind,” I say, carrying my TV camera. It’s almost time for the 6:00 p.m. kickboxing class, and Gigabyte is the only woman learner there. She’s also something of a virus-writing genius, having started programming at age six. “I figured out how to write a few lines of code on my uncle’s Commodore 64,” says Gigabyte, who has just recently celebrated her 18th birthday. At age fourteen, she wrote her first computer worm, which took over the shutdown screens of infected users. Two years later, she wrote another powerful virus that damages MP3 files. And recently she has become the second person to write a virus in C# (pronounced “C sharp”). Her so-called “Sharpei” worm, which comes in an email attachment, infects certain files in computers.

“Virus writing is so aggressive, and most reasonable people consider it an act of vandalism(蓄意破坏), or at least potential vandalism,” I say. “That’s not my problem. The users are running the virus. They are the ones clicking on it,” she says.

“So you really think the people who execute(运行) these programs are responsible for the damage that your viruses do?” I ask. “Actually,” she says, “I think many people should have to have some sort of license to get on the Internet.” Gigabyte is quick to remind visitors that she never releases her viruses into the wild. Instead, she sends them to antivirus companies, hoping for the kind of affirmation(确认) that only comes with “high-risk”. But she also has posted her viruses on her homepage, meaning anyone else could release them. “That’s not my problem,” she says. “When people make guns, can you blame them when somebody kills somebody else with the guns? I only write them; I don’t release them. I do want to work with computers for a living, but not with an antivirus company.”

21. How old was Gigabyte when she wrote her first computer virus?

A. 6. B. 14. C. 16. D. 18.

22. How does Gigabyte’s Sharpei worm spread from one computer to another?

A. It comes in an email attachment. B. It takes over the shutdown screens.

C. It spreads via MP3 files. D. It wipes hard drive cleaner.

23. What is the author’s attitude to virus writing?

A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Defensive. D. Positive.

24. Which of the following statements is WRONG according to the passage?

A. Gigabyte is taking kickboxing classes.

B. Gigabyte doesn’t think she is to blame for spreading the virus.

C. Gigabyte thinks not everyone can use the Internet appropriately.

D. Gigabyte works for antivirus companies secretly.

Scientists say new man-made materials equipped with sensors could turn bandages into a valuable tool for health care workers.

Simple bandages are easy to use, covering up the damaged skin and giving it time to heal. Scientists are now developing bandages with technology currently used in popular wearable devices, such as smart watches and fitness trackers. They have begun adding small sensors of all kinds to bandages and making them more sensitive. Scientists are also making new materials called hydrogels(水凝胶). Hydrogels resemble human skin. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have found a way to combine these two technologies. They created a stretchy polymer(聚合物)with firmness similar to human soft tissue. The new combination product has titanium wires that lie in a zig-zag, or “z”-shaped design. The wires, connected to electronic sensors, stretch easily without breaking contact with the sensors.

Xuanhe Zhao, an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering, says the researchers put electronic devices, such as sensors, into the new material. They use a different device to put medicine in the damaged skin. The resulting product becomes a kind of “smart-wound dressing” --- one that can react to changes in the skin around it.

For example, Zhao says, if there is a sudden increase in temperature, the wound will send out a command. That is when “the controlled drug delivery system can deliver a specific drug to that specific location.” LED lights in the bandage can warn patients and doctors about changes in different areas. Medication quickly spreads across the bandage, through tiny passageways so that the wound heals quickly. Zhao tells us that he and his team are working hard and hope to get to clinical tests soon. It will be some time before these smart bandages reach hospitals or drug stores. But Zhao says “I firmly believe that eventually they will have a broad application.” In the future, such products might even contain a computer chip, which would give them more power to analyze what is needed.

25. According to the passage, titanium wires _____________.

A. are “z” shaped and similar to human skin

B. stretch easily so that they break contact with electronic sensors

C. lie in the new combination product ,a polymer

D. are connected to electric sensors and sensitive to temperature

26. What do we know about smart bandages according to the passage?

A. They have been applied to patients in most clinics.

B. They can react to changes in the skin around.

C. They will deliver drugs to the wound before it sends out a command.

D. They can warn doctors of drug changes through LED lights.

27. What does the underlined “they” refer to in the last paragraph?

A. Smart bandages. B. Clinical tests. C. Drug stores. D. Computer chips.

28. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Bandages and Electronic Sensors

B. Smart Bandages and Electronic Devices

C. Smart Bandages to Heal Wounds More Quickly

D. A New Way to Develop Electronic Sensors for Bandages

“No pains, no gains.” gives the impression that we ought to be suffering while we study. It seems that the only way to know if we’re putting in enough work is how much hardship we bear. We are totally taken up with study, shutting ourselves away for a big exam. Is that necessarily true?

When we haven’t taken the time to come up with another idea, we just shut ourselves in a room with a book. It’s no surprise that we find revision boring and difficult. Just as children learn from playing, we can learn from doing, or at least from study techniques that interest us, rather than make us switch off. Shutting ourselves away can make us learn to hate studying, leading to a situation where instead of being able to concentrate on our work, we are troubled by how unfair it is that we must study. This can be part of a vicious cycle(恶性循环) that traps us into ineffective revision, your poor progress fueling further annoyance.

Thankfully, working in the company of other people really helps fight against that. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions. It’s not necessary to avoid all company, just idle(懒散的)company. People, who are bored and looking to be distracted, are terrible to work around. They constantly try to keep others in conversation. While studying in the same room with someone who is ironing or working out is perfectly possible. Of course, it’s also a good idea to avoid the company of people involved in activities where you would rather be playing than study. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is most likely to end with a new high score in games rather than productive revision.

If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can block out noises. They also act as a psychological barrier, so that people think twice before interrupting you. Besides, we should know friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation(孤立). And connecting with other people makes us happy, so it’s important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time to socialize.

32. The author’s purpose in writing the text is to ___________.

A. introduce an effective studying means

B. encourage us to work as hard as possible

C. remind us to balance activities and study

D. discuss the importance of family company

33. What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A. Revision is interesting and easy with study techniques for certain.

B. Shutting ourselves away can help concentrate on work.

C. A favorable interest might lead to effective revision.

D. Good ideas are needed in terms of progress.

34. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 implies that ___________.

A. playing video games is helpful for an effective study

B. one shouldn’t study with the company of a video player

C. one should study from certain activities that one is interested in

D. the more time one spends in playing games, the higher test scores one will get

35. If you are studying in a noisy environment, you’d better ___________.

A. think twice before taking any action

B. give up others’ company at once

C. give indication of not wanting to be interrupted

D. force yourself to be accustomed to the environment

书面表达:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m writing in response to your discussion about the question: should I choose a good major or a good university first when I graduate from high school?

Every student will be faced with the question after he passes the entrance exam tocollege. Some students prefer to consider majors first so that they can learn what they are interested in. It will also make it possible for there to take their favorite job in future. Those who think differently believe that the environment is important to one’s development and that graduates from leading universities are often more likely to find a good job.

In my opinion, the best choice is a good major at a good university. If we cannot obtain both, the first thing to consider is a good major, because no matter where we study, we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if we try our best. It’s much better for us students to combine all the factors together to make final decisions.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua
