InthenovelTheThirty-nineStepsRichardHahneisprotagonist.ThestoryisthatminingengineerRichardHannayfromSouthAfricatoreturntoEngland.ThreemouthslateranAmericannamedFranklinP.Scudder(HistrueidentitywasCaptainTheophilusDigbyoftheBritishArmyfoundhimwhenHannayfeltboringofhislifeinEngland.ScuddertoldHannaythathehaddiscoveredagroupofpeoplewhowereworkingsecretlytopushEuropetowardsawarbyaccidentandhehaddiscoveredhow,thatwasverydangerousforhesohehadtodisappear.HannayallowedScuddertemporarilytoescapeinhisapartment.ButOnenight,HannayfoundthatalongknifethroughScuddersheart,pinninghimtothefloor.His.ForescapepoliceandBlackstoneHannaydressedhimselfasamilkmanandescapedtoScotlandbytrain.
