Module 1 课时跟踪练(一) Introduction & Reading — Pre-reading

I was recently asked what inspires me most. That was easy to answer: I_live_and_breathe_track_and_field. It is the only sport that has allowed me to spread my wings and truly fly. I have struggled a lot in my life after being diagnosed (诊断) with a learning disability at the age of three. I was also born four months too early, weighing less than four pounds. Even at 17, I’m still working to catch up. Mentally I’m on the level of a 12yearold. I had to repeat the third and fifth grade, which caused me a lot of stress and embarrassment.
I was joked so much that I would often hide in the bathroom instead of going to class. My parents always gave me lots of love and support, but I still felt worthless most of the time. I’m also quite shy, so making and keeping friends has always been a challenge.
Then one day when I was 12, my life changed forever. My parents decided my younger brother and I should try track. From that moment on my life was different. I was a natural middistance runner. When I was on the track, the other kids just saw me and my speed. No one saw my learning disability. For the first time in my life I felt normal.
When I entered high school, I joined the track team and the coach quickly saw my talent. I was selected to run on the A team for crosscounty and the A team for indoor and outdoor track. I’m on the school team for the 4 × 400meter and 4 × 800meter relays, and colleges are even interested in me!
My crosscounty team won the 2011 County and Regional Championship. When I accepted my award, my mom cried because she was so proud of me, and for once, I was proud of myself.
Even though I’m a specialeducation student, I now know that my learning disability does not define (限定) me.I can hold my head up high because track has allowed me to spread my wings and truly fly!

The roots of basketball are deep in Canada. In 1891 the game was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian who was from Almonte, Ontario.
Having been given the task of creating a new indoor sports activity while conducting a physical education class at the international YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith designed what we now call basketball. The original game involved 13 rules and a peach basket hung ten feet above the floor. Even though it took place in the United States, at least ten of the players who located in the first game were university students from Quebec.
Basketball played by school and local amateur teams has been part of the Canadian sports scene since the turn of the century. Hoops teams representing Canada have joined in Olympic Games since 1936 and in the World Championships since 1954.
One of the most storied amateur teams in Canadian basketball history is the Edmonton Commercial Graduates (Grad’s), a group of Canadian women who dominated (占优势) the sport in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Over 25 years, the Grad’s played 522 games at home and abroad, against both women’ s and men’s teams. The Grad’s accomplished a recordbreaking winning streak (连胜场数) of 147 games and throughout their basketball tenure (任期) won remarkable (卓越的) 502 times.
The National Basketball Association also has origins in Canada. The NBA’s first game was played in Toronto nearly seventy years ago, on November 1, 1946 when the New York Knickerbockers defeated the Toronto Huskies 6866 at Maple Leaf Gardens. The teams were part of the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner to the NBA.
The Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies joined the NBA beginning in the 1995-96 season, becoming the first nonU.S. cities to join the league since the Toronto Huskies were oneyear members of the BAA.In summer 2001, the Grizzlies relocated from Vancouver to Memphis, Tennessee.

BEAVERTON, Ore.— Jaime Nared is nearly 6foot1 and blessed with Michael Jordanstyle skills. In games, she can more than hold her own against the boys, dropping threepointers and sometimes scoring 30 points or more.
And there, according to her coach, lies the problem.
“She’s so good,” Michael Abraham said. “She makes the boys look like scrubs (灌木丛).” So she has been told she can no longer play on boys’ teams at the Hoop, a private Beaverton basketball facility that runs a league in which Abraham’s teams compete.
The trouble started last month, when some parents told the Hoop management they didn’t like Jaime playing with the boys. Hoop officials informed Abraham that Jaime, after years on one of his boys’ teams, was refused. Neal Franzer, the Hoop’s director of operations, said Thursday that the parents were adamant (坚决的) but their complaints had nothing to do with Jaime’s skills.
“They said the problem was that the boys were playing differently against her because she was a girl,” he said. “They’d been taught not to push a girl, and the focus had changed from playing basketball to noticing a girl was on the floor with them.”
Hoop officials emailed Abraham to remind him of the rules. Abraham, Jaime and her parents didn’t buy it.“I think the complaints come from parents who don’t like seeing a girl that good playing against their sons,” Abraham said.
Jaime, who said she “fell in love” with basketball when she was 8, likes the boys’ team because boys play a fastpaced game.
Jaime’s mum, Reiko Williams, said the issue boiled over after a particular game. “She scored 30 points,” Williams said. “I remember one play. She stole the ball and made a behindtheback pass to a teammate. He missed the layin, and she grabbed the rebound and put it in. I think it was just too much for some of those parents.”
