A

Last night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient.

At one point along an open road, I came to a crossing with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I drove near the light, it turned red and I made a stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.

I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.

Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of a contract (契约) we all have with each other. It's not only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.

Trust is our first inclination (倾向). Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us. The whole construction of our society depends on mutual (相互) trust, not distrust. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up; and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and we're angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.

I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.

21. Why did the author get impatient while driving?

A. He was lonely on the road. B. He was slowed down by a truck.

C. He got tired of driving too long. D. He came across too many traffic lights.

22. What was the author's immediate action when the traffic light turned red?

A. Stopping still. B. Driving through it.

C. Looking around for other cars. D. Checking out for traffic police.

23. The event made the author strongly believe that ______.

A. traffic rules may be unnecessary B. doubting others is human nature

C. patience is important to drivers D. a society needs mutual trust

24. Why was the author proud of himself?

A. He kept his promise. B. He held back his anger.

C. He followed his inclination. D. He made a right decision.

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their pets are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.

Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you're cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.

If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet's water. Sometimes owners don't realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can't get anything to drink. Animals that don't have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.

25. What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?

A. They are often forgotten by their owners. B. They are used to living outdoors.

C. They build their own shelters. D. They like to stay in warm places.

26. Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?

A. To know when to bring them inside. B. To keep them from eating bad food.

C. To help them find shelters. D. To keep them company.

27. If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may ______.

A. run short of clean water B. dig deep holes for fun

C. dirty the snow nearby D. get lost in the wild

28. What is the purpose of this text?

A. To solve a problem. B. To give practical advice.

C. To tell an interesting story. D. To present a research result.

Sometimes we have disagreements with people. When this (61) h , the important thing is to try not to let a calm discussion turn into a heated argument. Here (62) my tips for you.

The (63) f thing I would say is that the way you begin the conversation is very important.

Imagine you are a student and you share a flat (64) another student who you think isn't doing her share of the housework. If you say, "Look, you never do your share of the housework. (65) are you going to do about it?", the discussion will very soon turn into an argument. It's much more (66) (有帮助) to say something like, "I think we had (67) b have another look about how we divide up the housework. Maybe there is a better way of dealing with it."

My second piece of (68) a is simple. If you're the person who is in the wrong, just admit it! This is the easiest and best way to avoid an argument. Just make an (69) (道歉), and move on. The other person will have more respect for you (70) the future if you do that.

Public Speaking and Critical Thinking

What is critical thinking? To a certain degree, it's a matter of logic (逻辑) — of being able to spot weaknesses in other people's arguments and to avoid them in your own. It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence.

In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking — the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas. 36 The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas. That, too, is critical thanking.

37 As the class goes on, for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organizing your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical (机械的) exercise, it is closely connected with critical thinking. If the structure of your speech is loose and confused, chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If, on the other hand, the structure is clear, there is a good chance your thinking is too. Organizing a speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have. 38

What is true of organization is true of many aspects of public speaking. 39 As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately. 40 As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations.

If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece.

A. Rather, it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves.

B. This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it.

C. It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech.

D. It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganized ideas.

E. If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot.

F. The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways.

G. As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking, you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well.

My father and I stayed at the South Lake Hotel for a week when we visit Beijing last month. It is in the downtown area, but it is easy to go to anywhere from the hotel by public transport.

We lived in a comfortably double-room with a big bath. What I liked best were the free high-speed Internet connection in the room. I checked my email messages every day. I also shared for my friends many photos taking in Beijing. The food was wonderful with reasonable prices, and we enjoyed several local dish.

It is such great hotel that I would recommend it to any friend of me who is going to Beijing.
