The life of Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was baptized on 26 April 1564 and died on 23 April

1616.He was a great English poet and playwright on Europe Renaissance time,

and he was widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and

the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet

and the "Bard of Avon".

Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18,

he married a 26-year old woman Anne Hathaway. When not reach 21 years old

he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith.

Years later he came to London. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a

successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing

company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men.

He appeared to have retired to Stratford around 1613. Shakespeare lived in

London for more than 20 years, and during this period his wife still stayed bases.

Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613.His

early plays were mainly comedies and histories, and he rose to the peak of

sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. In his last phase,

he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other

playwrights.

In 1616, Shakespeare left the world at the age of 52 years old. In these 52

years profession, he wrote 37 scripts for the common people, as well as154

sonnets and two long narrative poems. His plays have been translated into every

major living language and are performed more often than those of any other

playwright.

Shakespeare’s representative work has 4-big tragedy: "Hamlet", "Othello",

"King Lear " ,"Macbeth " . 4-big comedy: "A Midsummer Night's Dream ",

"The Merchant of Venice ", " Twelfth Night ", " "As You Like It" . Historical

play: "King Henry the Fourth Part 1 ", " King Henry the Fifth ", " King Richard

II " and so on.

Shakespeare's works start from the real life, and profoundly reflect the

times and social nature. He is good at starting from the real life, showing broad

social background. He provides the characters in the works and events with rich

era characteristics of typical environment. The plot of his works is rich and vivid;

the characters have a distinct personality, as well as typical significance; the

depiction of realism is cleverly combined with romantic atmosphere; language is

rich and expressive.

Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his

reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. In the

twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new

movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular

today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural

and political contexts throughout the world.

Nearly four hundred years, his works have been brought a lot of joy to the

readers and critics . Because Shakespeare has accepted the test of time, he not

only belongs to one era but also belongs to the whole century. He receives a lot

of famous people's praise, such as:

1. "The greatest genius in drama of mankind" ——Marx

2. "His work is based on such a wide range of life that everything created under

his pen appears genuine and believable to us. Someone once suggested that he

didn't belong to the scope of modern poets called as "romantic", but belonged to

the "naturalistic" genre, because his works are filled with neoteric reality, and

seldom touch the passion generated by uncommited desires unless when he was

most excited." ——Engels

3."If there's someone who may make a solemn scene rise in my mind, that he is

sitting high on the top of a rock, with the thunder storm and blustering sea under

his feet, and the bright sky shining on his head, it is just what Shakespeare does.

——But certainly, there's still one point to add that, a large crowd of people are

muttering on the bottom of his throne of rock, explaining him, saving him,

convicting him, defending him, adoring him, libeling him, translating him,

slandering him, while he can hear nothing of what they are saying. ——Herder

4. "Shakespeare is the infinity";"Shakespeare, who is unable to be explained

thoroughly"! "The spiritual reality contained in Shakespeare's style of works far

exceeds the visible actions". ——Goethe

5. "Who has created most is Shakespeare, being only second to God." ——Dumas

In my heart, Shakespeare is a great man, I like reading his works. He has a

great influence on me.
