瓦努阿图国家简介:

瓦努阿图位于太平洋西南部，属美拉尼西亚群岛，由约80个岛屿（其中68个有人居住）组成。陆地面积1.219万平方公里，水域面积84.8万平方公里。最大的的岛屿是桑托岛，面积3947平方公里。属热带海洋性气候。

数千年前瓦努阿图人即在此生息。1606年被西班牙探险家发现。1768年法国人到此。1774年英国库克船长到此并将该地命名为“新赫布里底”。1906年10月，英法签署了共管公约，该地沦为英法共管殖民地。1963年土著人成立了第一个政党——乡村党，要求收回土地和实现独立。1978年1月实行内部自治。1980年7月30日独立，并成为英联邦会员国，在1981年又加入了联合国和1983年加入不结盟运动。

It is my privilege as President to introduce you to the Republic of Vanuatu. My country is an archipelago of 83 islands, situated in the South West Pacific Ocean, about 2.5 flying hours from the east coast of Australia, North of New Zealand, not far from the Fiji Islands, and a little over 7,000 km south east of Shanghai.

The people of Vanuatu are very special. Having travelled the vast Pacific Ocean to land on these islands over 2,000 years ago, the Ni Vanuatu as we are called, from the Melanesian race, have lived for centuries in close harmony with the envrionment.

瓦努阿图人民是非常特殊的。2000多年前，在游历过浩瀚的太平洋后，瓦努阿图人民在这片土地上定居下来。我们称他们为尼-瓦努阿图，来自美拉尼西亚种族。他们在这片土地上和谐地居住长达几个世纪之久。

In this 21st century, Vanuatu won an international accolade as the happiest country in the world, based upon an independent assessment of the low environmental footprint caused by its people, the long life expectancy, and high quality of life and sense of community experienced by its people. It is indeed the natural welcoming smile of the Ni Vanuatu, their openness and friendliness to outsiders, that makes Vanuatu a special place to visit.

After living in splendid isolation for centuries, Europeans visited then settled in the country. Vanuatu was one of the few places that was colonised jointly by two countries. In our case we were a colony of France and Britain for 75 years until independence in 1980. Since Vanuatu's independence, the nation has rapidly matured in terms of its institutions of state, the development of a mature economy, and its engagement with the outside world as an independent nation of about 200,000 people.

Because of its beauty and culture, the country has become a popular tourist destination in the South West Pacific. Tourists like Vanuatu for its diversity, the potential for soft adventure in its islands, whether visiting beauty spots, scuba diving or snorkelling the ever present coral reefs, sailing, fishing, hiking through magnificent scenery, observing traditional culture up close, or just sitting under a massive banyan tree on the beach admiring the unspoilt world. There is accommodation ranging from large luxury resorts in the major centres of Port Vila or Luganville through to small local family-owned bungalows on the outer islands. The general feeling is of an unspoilt destination.

Agriculture is the second largest sector, providing both the local food supply, and some exports, mostly, copra, sandalwood, and kava, the latter a specialised root crop that produces the social drink of choice around the Pacific and now in places around the world, and on sample at World Expo 2010 Shanghai. Vanuatu kava is renown around the Pacific as the most noble variety.

Vanuatu is a world leader in the adoption of coconut oil as a replacement for diesel fuel. Manufacturing in Vanuatu is small, but specialised, and largely derived from natural products. Specialised medicines produced from the Beche-La-Mar or Sea Cucumber are produced in Vanuatu and sold around the world, with major research now being undertaken by the US Food and Drug Administration, to establish the effectiveness of some of these medicines for treating cancer. Vanuatu is a high quality coffee exporter, and produces many health care products.

Vanuatu strongly promotes private sector led growth. Many of the major international accounting firms and a number of major international financial institutions have representation in the capital of Port Vila, and the second city, Luganville.

The Ni Vanuatu are happy people and this happiness is infectious. We hope that from the sharing of our lifestyle experience, we can help inspire city dwellers to reinvigorate their sense of being an important member and contributor to the well-being of their community environent.
