The people who influenced my life

She is the one who forces me to stay up to write essay.

She is the one who criticizes all my carefully drawn paintings.

She is the one who insists to talk to me in English while we are on the phone.

She is Rebecca, a girl who has influenced my life.

Rebecca is one of my dearest friends. We came from the same junior and senior school and were once dear desk mates.

So to tell you the story,

We were once the volunteers of an activity called “ Innovative Dream Plan” which requires us to teach innovative classes in some junior schools. That week, our topic was reverse thinking. But as the deadline was approaching, we still hadn’t come up with some ideas that are good enough. Desperate and exhausted, I somehow gave up and surrendered to those common and mediocre ideas that we have thought of. But my good partner and dear Rebecca always would pursue perfectness. One night, we were on the phone discussing our teaching plan. I was extremely tired and sleepy and tried to persuade her to bed and leave it all to tomorrow. But she seemed rather persistent; she kept talked to me and encouraged me to prevent me from falling asleep while searching on line for some novel ideas on the same time. Time went from 23:00 to 24:00. I was still desperate and lying in my bed, not wanting to think of anything. But she was there, kept me on the phone, murmuring about the stories she had saw and kept asked my opinions. I was somehow miraculously motivated; I opened my computer and began to think, but still lied in my bed. Then time flied by, we excitedly discussed several possible ideas. For example, let students change gender characters, from male to female and vice versa to let them understand reverse thinking. And let students change a notorious place such as tomb to tourist’s sites to let them change disadvantages to advantages and think reversely. I was totally awakened now; I got off my bed and began to write the teaching plan. By the time I went to bed again, it was 4:00 in the mourning but I felt relaxed and content. We wished each other good night and went to sound sleep. Unsurprisingly, the plan we finally came up is really a success.

I have always realized that I am inclined to give up. But it was Rebecca who made me went beyond my limitations. I was not arguing that staying up is the right way but sometimes it was this crazy stuff that unlocked our potential. The similar thing happened again when we were travelling in Chengdu. We were to participate in Model United Nations conference in the following days but we hadn’t finished our position paper, which is required to submit before the conference. Normally, no body would like to work during their trip. After wandering in Jiu Zhaigou for a whole day and enjoyed all those beautiful sceneries, all I wanted is to chat with friend and to drink some beers and have a sound sleep. But obviously I cannot get what I want when I have Rebecca as both my partner and roommates. She locked us in our room and urged both of us to finish that position paper. I tried to come up with some excuses but she just sat there carefully working. I couldn’t bear it anyway. I cannot go to sleep knowing that my partner is still working. This time she successfully made us finish our work before deadline again.

Rebecca herself is not a girl who can always finish her work in advance, but she is just persistent enough to work under every circumstances. This character really touches me and influences my life. We do have a tendency to find excuses for ourselves. She somehow shows me that nothing is possible. Stay up to make a phone call discussing our teaching plan for three hours is possible. Finish a position paper on the relation between Russia and European Union during a trip is possible. There are not so many excuses. All I need to do is try my best and even go beyond my limitations.

Another interesting character of Rebecca is that she insists on many strange habits. For example, we both like to draw. But she is more crazy and talented than I am. She would draw a painting every day. Every time I shared my paintings with her, she would definitely criticize me, and asked if I had been practicing lately. Unlike normal friends, she always expresses her feelings straightforward. At first, I am little hurt by her and listen to her advice reluctantly. But in retrospect, it is Rebecca who pushes me and helps me to make improvements.

There is another example, she likes to speak English and practice her oral English. Therefore, I am asked to talk to her in English on the phone, or on many circumstances, normally public situation. At first I think this is really and really embarrassing. I am afraid how people will look at us. Two nerds, two freaks? But I do agree that talking in English is a good way to practice. Deep inside my heart, I do agree what Rebecca is making me to do. If I walk on the street by myself I will definitely not speak English, but with her, I somehow have the courage.

There has been a hard time for me to get used to all these strange habits of Rebecca. But gradually it began to dawn on me that it is Rebecca who makes me care less about what the others think and have the courage to insist on something precious and valuable. Last week I just made a phone call with her and we again spoke English on the phone for like 1 hour. It just became more and more natural to me.

From all these little stories, do you want to have Rebecca as your friend? Personally speaking, I am grateful to her. She has made me realize my potentials and unlock them. She has helped me to insist on some precious characters. Every time, when I make a strong resolution and exert myself to finish some work no matter how late I have to stay up, I would think of Rebecca who may be doing th e same thing across the sea in Singapore. Every time, when I finally finish something and have the sense of achievement, I would think of Rebecca who has influenced me so deeply.
