In 1978, I was 18 and was working as a nurse in a small town about 270 km away from Sydney, Australia. I was looking forward to having five days off from duty. Unfortunately, the only one train a day back to my home in Sydney had already left. So I thought Id hitch a ride (搭便车).

I waited by the side of the highway for three hours but no one stopped for me. Finally, a man walked over and introduced himself as Gordon. He said that although he couldnt give me a lift, I should come back to his house for lunch. He noticed me standing for hours in the November heat and thought I must be hungry. I was doubtful as a young girl but he assured (使……放心)me I was safe, and he also offered to help me find a lift home afterwards. When we arrived at his house, he made us sandwiches. After lunch, he helped me find a lift home.

Twenty-five years later, in 2003, while I was driving to a nearby town one day, I saw an elderly man standing in the glaring heat, trying to hitch a ride. I thought it was another chance to repay someone for the favor Id been given decades earlier. I pulled over and picked him up. I made him comfortable on the back seat and offered him some water.

After a few moments of small talk, the man said to me, You havent changed a bit, even your red hair is still the same.

I couldnt remember where Id met him. He then told me he was the man who had given me lunch and helped me find a lift all those years ago. It was Gordon.

You may think that sailing is a difficult sport, but it is really not hard to learn itYou do not need to be strongBut you need to be quickAnd you need to understand a few basic rules about the wind.

First, you must ask yourself, Where is the wind coming from? Is it coming from ahead or behind or from the side? You must think about this all the time on the boatThe wind direction tells you what to do with the sail.

Let's start with the wind blowing from behindThis means the wind and the boat are going in the same directionThen you must always keep the sail outside the boatIt should be at a 90° angle (角度) to the boatThen it will catch the wind best.

If the wind is blowing from the side, it is blowing across the boatIn this case, you must keep the sail half way outside the boatIt should be at a 45° angle to the boatIt needs to be out far enough to catch the wind, but it shouldn't flap (摆动)It shouldn't look like a flag on a flagpoleIf it is flapping, it is probably out too far, and the boat will slow down.

Sailing against the wind is not possibleIf you try, the sail will flap and the boat will stopYou may want to go in that directionIt is possible, but you can't go in a straight lineYou must go first in one direction and then in anotherThis is called tackingWhen you are tacking, you must always keep the sail inside the boat.

15. What should you consider first while sailing?

A. Sailors' strength. B. Wave levels.

C. Size of sails. D. Wind directions.

16. What does the word It underlined in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. The boat. B. The sail. C. The wind. D. The angle.

17. What do you have to do when sailing against the wind?

A. Move in a straight line. B. Allow the sail to flap.

C. Lower the sail. D. Tack the boat.

18. Where can you probably find the text?

A. In a popular magazine. B. In a tourist guidebook.

C. In a physics textbook. D. In an official report.

One day, when I was working as a psychologist(心理学家) in England, a young boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had introduced him to me before. This boy has lost his family, he wrote. He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and Im very worried about him. Can you help?

I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems which psychology doesnt have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and silently. And I would do in this way.

The first two times we met, David didnt say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the childrens drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoonin complete silence and without looking at me. Its not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.

Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?

Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with, I thought. Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering. Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.

Its your turn, he said.

After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.

Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that onewithout any wordscan reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.

22. When he first met the author, David_________.

A. felt a little excited B. walked stubbornly

C. looked a little nervous D. showed up with his teacher

23. As a psychologist, the author __________.

A. was uncertain about psychology

A. needed to share pain with the author

B. wanted to ask the author for advice

C. liked the childrens drawing in the office

D. beat the author many times in the chess game

25. What can be inferred about David?

A. He recovered after months of treatment.

B. He liked biking before he lost his family.

C. He went into university soon after starting to talk.

D. He got friends in school before he met the author.

26. What made David change?

A. His teachers help.

Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax(), which is deep inside the bees nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lighted.

27. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees' nest?

A. It's small in size. B. It's buried in the soil.

29. The honey guide is special in the way ________.

A. it gets its food B. it goes to church

C. it sings in the forest D. it reaches into bees nests

30. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Wild Bees B. Wax and Honey

C. Honey-Lover's Helper D. Beekeeping in Africa

51.【答案】Everybody wants to be successful. But only a few people take action immediately when they want to do something.

Whenever I saw my friends swim, I would admire them. How I wished I could swim like them! But I couldnt seem to learn how. It frightened me just to think of being alone in the water. My father encouraged me to learn from my friends. He said, How do you know you cant if you never give it a try? Nobody is born knowing how to swim. I realized I needed to do something, and began to practice swimming on weekends. My father taught me, and showed me there was nothing to be afraid of. Two months later, I could swim.

This experience has also taught me that as long as I never give up and keep trying, I can succeed.

【亮点明】文章使用了很好的短和句子:take action采取行encourage …to do… 鼓励某人做什么How I wished I could swim like them! 用了虚拟语气, It frightened me just to think of being alone in the water. 用了it做形式主 Nobody is born knowing how to swim.” 用了伴随状 there was nothing to be afraid of. 用了there be句型。This experience has also taught me that as long as I never give up and keep trying, I can succeed.用了宾语从句和条件状从句。

考点:考开放式面表达
