在报道中，cold spell指的就是“寒潮”，同样意思的表达还有cold snap，例如：We are having a cold snap.（我们这儿正遇上寒潮。）spell在这里指的是“（某种天气的)一段持续时间”，例如：We finally got a sunny day after the long raining spell.（过了长长一阵子雨天之后,终于有了放晴的一天。）spell作名词还可以表示“轮流、轮班”，例如：Father and son took spells at the wheel.（父子轮流开车。）此外，spell还可以做动词，除了我们最常见的“拼写”之外，它还可以表示“招致、带来、意味着”，例如：These changes spell ruin for the company.（这些变化意味着该公司破产。）
所谓寒潮，就是北方的冷空气前锋 （cold front）大规模地向南侵袭我国，造成大范围急剧降温（sharp drop of temperature）的天气过程。寒潮常常伴有大风（strong gale）、霜冻（frost）、暴风雪（blizzard）和雨凇（glaze）等恶劣天气。
