A

It came as something of a surprise when Diana, Princess of Wales, made a trip to Angola in 1997, to support the Red Cross’s campaign for a total ban on all anti-personnel landmines. Within hours of arriving in Angola television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines. “I knew the statistics,” she said, “But putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me; like when I met Sandra, a 13-year-old girl who had lost her leg, and people like her.”

The Princess concluded with a simple message: “We must stop landmines”. And she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message.

But, back in London, her views were not shared by some members of the British government, which refused to support a ban on these weapons. Angry politicians launched an attack on the Princess in the press. They described her as “very ill-informed” and a “loose cannon (乱放炮的人).”

The Princess responded by brushing aside the criticisms: “This is a distraction we do not need. All I’m trying to do is help.”

Opposition parties, the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the Princess. To make matters worse for the government, it soon emerged that the Princess’s trip had been approved by the Foreign Office, and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in Angola and the British government’s policy regarding landmines. The result was a severe embarrassment for the government.

To try and limit the damage, the Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkind, claimed that the Princess’s views on landmines were not very different from government policy, and that it was “working towards” a worldwide ban. The Defence Secretary, Michael Portillo, claimed the matter was “a misinterpretation or misunderstanding”.

For the Princess, the trip to this war-torn country was an excellent opportunity to use her popularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause. She said that the experience had also given her the chance to get closer to people and their problems.

56. Princess Diana paid a visit to Angola in 1997______.

A. to voice her support for a total ban of landmines.

B. to clarify the British government’s stand on landmines.

C. to investigate the sufferings of landmine victims.

D. to establish her image as a friend of landmine victims.

57. What did Diana mean when she said“…putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me” (Para.1)?

A. She just couldn’t bear to meet the landmine victims face to face.

B. The actual situation in Angola made her feel like going back home.

C. Meeting the landmine victims in person made her believe the statistics.

D. Seeing the pain of the victims made her realize the seriousness of the situation.

58. How did Diana respond to the criticisms?

A. She made more appearances on TV. B. She paid no attention to them.

C. She met the 13-year-old girl as planned. D. She rose to argue with her opponents.

59. What did Princess Diana think of her visit to Angola?

A. It had caused embarrassment to the British government.

B. It had brought her closer to the ordinary people.

C. It had greatly promoted her popularity.

D. It had affected her relations with the British government.

THE year of 2014 has been jam-packed with events good, bad, and ugly. But no matter what has happened, smart people have always been busy inventing.

Here are some of the inventions of 2014 that have helped to make the world better, smarter, and a little more fun.

‘Super banana’

Australian biogeneticist James Dale visited Uganda, a poor African country, in the early 2000s. There, he found that 15-30 percent of children under 5 were at risk of going blind because they did not get enough Vitamin A. Dale also learned that people there love bananas. They eat three to 11 bananas a day. So he came up with the idea to plant bananas containing added nutrition in order to improve Ugandans’ health.

With the help of Bill Gates’ foundation, Dale developed the “super banana”. He added a gene to the fruit, making it rich in Vitamin A. In June, “super bananas” began human trials in the US.

Coaching basketball

Basketball is popular worldwide, partly because you only need a hoop and a ball to play the game. But this simple game has experienced a technology makeover this year with the development of a smart-sensor basketball.

The ball, called the 94Fifty Basketball, has nine sensors inside. They can tell you anything from how fast you are going to how accurate your shot angles are.

With a Bluetooth chip inside, the basketball can connect to your smartphone and tell you in the voice of a coach to “snap your wrist (传旋转球)”, or “go faster”, depending on the data.

The Hovercraft

Thanks to the California-based company Hendo, flying past your friends on a floating board could soon become a reality.

The Hovercraft has four small engines. These create a special magnetic field which generates (产生) enough force to lift the board off the ground, according to kickstarter.com.

At the moment, the hoverboard can only float an inch off the ground for 15 minutes and must fly over a metallic material. It’s expensive too, at $10,000 (61,810 yuan), but the company hopes that one day the technology could be used to improve the world.

Wireless electricity

Most of us could not bear to live without wireless Internet. We use it every day for everything from our phones to our cars. But one company wants to go a step further, by combining wireless technology with electricity.

That’s right, no more tangled (缠绕的) wires and no more having to sit and hold your cell phone near a power socket in the corner of the room. WiTricity, a US company, has invented technology that can power objects up to 2.4 meters away. It uses a special plug-in coil (线圈) that creates a magnetic field.

60. Which of the following statements would James Dale agree with?

A. Vitamin A is largely found in fruits like bananas.

B. Children in Uganda should eat fewer bananas.

C. Scientists could make use of people’s eating habits to develop new food products.

D. “Super bananas” are definitely a safe biological product.

61. What is the biggest advantage of the 94Fifty Basketball?

A. It allows players to connect to their smartphones while playing basketball.

B. It can help players to improve their shooting and ball handling skills.

C. The bluetooth chip inside allows its users to listen to music while playing basketball.

D. The sensors hidden inside can help players run faster in a game.

62. According to the article, the Hovercraft ______.

A. enables its users to fly in the sky B. could work on many different kinds of surfaces

C. is an affordable means of transportation for an average family

D. still needs to improve its power and efficiency

63. We can learn from the article that both the Hovercraft and WiTricity ______.

A. are technologies that generate electricity

B. use magnetic fields to improve our daily lives

C. can apply their technologies to everything from our phones to our cars

D. use wireless technology to improve the performance of their products

64. The article is most likely to be taken from ______.

A. a newspaper advertisement B. a fashion magazine

C. a supermarket catalogue (商品目录) D. a science textbook

C

“ To survive around here, you’ve got to be tough as nails. Show them who’s the boss right from the start.” These words from my teacher stayed with me through my student teaching, but I couldn’t seem to put them to use.

With my student teaching behind me, I started out at a school in another part of town and was determined not to face another classroom where I didn’t have control. Day one I read my new fourth grade the longest list of rules they’d ever heard. I was the teacher. I was running the show. It was the students’ job to sit still, listen, and do as they were told. Much to my surprise, they did just that. Three days went by. Two weeks passed. I was in control.

By the end of September the headmaster was noticing the straight line we maintained while walking. My colleagues praised the class for getting drinks so quietly. Visitors smiled at the straight rows of hard-working, orderly students. I was pleased.

I might have felt even more successful if I hadn’t felt I was burning out fast. I found myself being angry with my students, who just sat there, not fully appreciating everything I was doing for them.

I shared my frustration with Mr. Greg, who invited me to observe one of his classes. I didn’t want to like his class, and at first I didn’t have to. My first impression was of loud voices and of students moving around the room at will. However, the longer I stayed, the more I was amazed. Mr. Greg wasn’t being “tough as nails,” and yet this wasn’t really chaos(混乱) at all. Students were discussing ideas for their own writing with each other. They didn’t seem to need controlling---they were controlling themselves.

“How did you get this to work?” I asked Mr. Greg later that day. “ If I gave my kids a time like this, half of them would just sit there and do nothing.”

It didn’t happen overnight. But the classroom gradually became a happier place for all of us. I wasn’t as tired because I wasn’t the only one working. My students---most of them, at least---were working much harder. And they were enjoying it.

Four years later I’m still learning. I still want to run the show. It’s often more difficult for me to relax, sit back, and watch a student take charge than to bear the entire responsibility myself. I have to remind myself that the order, the control, when it eventually does come, will be a whole lot easier to live with, easier and happier for all of us.

65. What can be learnt from the first two paragraphs about the writer’s student teaching?

A. He was always too tough with his students. B. He was unable to get his students under control.

C. His students called him boss from the beginning. D. His teacher praised him for his hard work.

66. Which of the following best describes the writer’s feeling as a new teacher before his observation of Mr. Greg’s class?

A. Very pleased B. Exhausted and annoyed

C. Quite upset D. Satisfied and doubtful

67. Which of the following about Mr. Greg’s class impressed the writer most?

A. The students made too much noise B. The students obeyed all his orders.

C. The students were the boss in his class D. The students moved around at will.

68. According to the writer, what prevented his students from working hard when he was in control?

A. Lack of responsibility B. Too much free time.

C. Lack of guidance D. Too little cooperation

69. The last paragraph is mainly about _________________.

A. the direct result of the writer’s hard work B. the writer’s great pleasure in teaching

C. the writer’s effort to put students in charge D. the responsibilities shared by students

70. Which is the best title of the passage?

A. Pleasure in Teaching B. Order in the Classroom

C. Hard Work of a Teacher D. Responsibilities of a Teacher

A. February – it’s one of the most pleasant months of the year. Most days have clear, sunny skies and the average temperature is a very cool 14°C. With an average monthly rainfall of only 20mm it is also one of the driest months.

B. April – it’s a warm spring month with moderate temperatures averaging around 21°C, and it is very wet, with 200mm rainfall on average for the month.

C. June – although it is the start of summer with average temperatures reaching a hot 28°C, you will not see much sun as it is usually very cloudy. It is also one of the wettest months of the year with frequent rain and average monthly rainfall of 240mm.

D. August – it is the hottest month of the year with average temperatures of 30°C. Generally very sunny during the day, but with frequent heavy rain showers in the evening that make it the wettest month of the year with an average monthly rainfall of 280mm.

E. October – this mid-autumn month is still pleasantly warm with average temperatures of 20°C. Days are mostly cloudy and overcast although rainfall levels are relatively low, averaging 70mm for rain for the month.

F. December – it is one of the coldest months of the year with average temperatures of 13°C. Night can be very cold. Mostly sunny, with a moderate average monthly rainfall of 60mm.

71. Corn – it requires a warm weather for strong and rapid growth. As it needs very wet soil, choose a time when there will be plenty of rain. High temperatures will cause corn to lose its sweet flavor.

72. Tomatoes – these popular plants are easy to grow as they can resist most pests and diseases. They require low temperatures, plenty of direct sunlight and dry conditions for best results.

73. Onions – these are a cold-season crop, easy to grow in the right conditions. They need a moderate amount of rain to keep the soil damp, but too much will cause them to rot. They should be planted during sunny period, as they grow best with plenty of direct sunlight.

74. Eggplants – these are tropical or subtropical, hot-season vegetables that need lots of direct sunlight. They grow best when the weather is very hot and there is plenty of water in the soil.

75. Potatoes – the taste of home-grown potatoes is far superior to store bought ones. They need a mild to warm conditions and relatively dry soil for best growth. They also require cloudy, overcast conditions for most of the time to prevent sunburn.

If I were ever fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go anywhere with a partner, I would choose Shakespeare as my companion. Recognized as the greatest playwright in the history of English literature, he would probably have a deep understanding of what is called beauty.

Together we would go hiking. All the way, the birds would sing above our heads as a warm welcome, and in return Shakespeare would immediately create a masterpiece. We would dance under the green shade to the rhythm of rustling leaves, and for a rest we would sit on the banks of a stream, talking about the eternal love between Romeo and Juliet and laughing at the foolish conducts of Hamlet.

Finally, when we reach the hilltop, we would peer down at the rolling hills beneath and up at the clear blue sky above. As we amuse ourselves with the moving clouds transforming into a million different shapes, we would truly understand the significance and beauty of nature.

W: Well, the price depends on the size, not on the words. So, if you want to use shorter words, that might save you some money.

M: Oh, that's a good idea. I have everything written out here, but I'll just check it over before I give it to you. Maybe I should use phrases instead of sentences.

W: Would you like to pay cash or by credit card?

M:(12) I'll probably be gone before a bill could be sent. I'm going to pay cash.

W: OK. You can use that table. Just bring it back to me when you are ready.

Text 9

W: (13)Hello, this is Mary speaking. Who's that?

M: It's me, Peter.

W: Oh, hello, Peter. Whom do you want to speak to?

M: Can I speak to John?

W: No, you can't speak to him now.

M: Isn't he in right now?

W: Yes, he is in, but he is very busy.

M: What is he doing, may I know?

W: (14)He is getting ready for school. (13)(16)Grandmother is combing his hair. Sister is looking for his coat. Mother is putting textbooks into his school bag. Goodbye. I've got to go now. I am holding the door open. (15)The school bus is coming.

M: In that case, I'll ring him again this afternoon. Bye!

W: See you. I'll tell him that.

Text 10

M: Have you ever forgotten an appointment at the doctor's or been late in getting to your part-time job? Occasionally, these difficulties happen to everybody. (17)However, you can avoid such problems if you write out schedules. They will help you to find out how much time you have to do the things that are important as well as those that are fun. (18)(19)A master schedule can be used to find out how much time you really have for activities. This schedule lists all of the activities that you must complete. (19)A weekly schedule can also be used to help you plan time for the things that you really like to do. Your weekly schedule should include time for activities. It also should include activities that will help you to achieve lifetime, long-term and short-term goals. Finally, it should include your study time and free time. Free time is necessary so that you can make needed changes in your schedule. (19)(20)A daily schedule is a final suggestion to help you plan your time.
