Many of you have watched a Superman cartoon or movie. But did you know he first appeared in comics(连环漫画)? Do you want to learn more about popular comic books around the world? Take a look!

Do you find reading boring? Have a read of some comic books. You will learn to love their colorful pictures and simple language.

Comic books usually tell stories through cartoons. The US and Japan have some great comic books. But they are not the same.

Their names are different. People say "comic books" in the US but "manga" in Japan.

American comics are often about superheroes—characters like Superman and Spider Man. So action is a major part of American comics. But Japanese manga like to tell stories of ordinary people. Luffy in One Piece(《海盗王》)is such an example.

American comics make people excited with super powers, while Japanese manga comfort(安慰)people with moving stories. Natsume's Book of Friends is about a teenage boy. He can see spirits(精灵). He is confused (困惑的)at first but later he makes friends with spirits.

If you are not interested in these two kinds, why not try some from China? Xia Da, 32, is a great comic book artist from China. Some of her comics are about school life. Others show the beauty of Chinese culture.

1What does the writer think of the comic books?

A. Boring.              B. Colorful and simple.              C. Difficult.              D. Difficult but exciting.

C

Ted, my little brother, is in Grade One. Last Friday he came back from school with a letter. The letter was from his teacher. “I got a red flower today. Could you please sign this note?” he said to mum. The note showed that he had been talking in class.

Ted hardly gets top scores in his school work. The best he gets is “OK”, but he often gets “You can do better than this.” Mum knows what it means. She tells me “You can do better than this” means “Extremely bad” in China.

In the USA, teachers never say anything too bad about their students, even if the students are making trouble in class or not working hard enough. The worst they might say is “Please be nicer tomorrow”. Many parents are satisfied with a B-grade for each subject.

But things in Chinese schools are quite different. Parents have high expectations for their children. I sometimes felt that my second-grade cousin spend more time on homework than I did when I was 6th grade in the US! Yet his parents and teachers didn't think he worked hard enough.

Is it too strict in China? Or is it not strict enough in the USA? Maybe both are true.

1Why did Ted come home with a letter last Friday?

A. Because the teacher wanted to visit his mother.

B. Because he did something wrong.

C. Because the teacher was happy with his progress.

D. Because the teacher thought he was too lazy.

2If a student in the USA gets “OK” in his schoolwork, it means ________.

A. he gets top scores                                            B. he gets medium scores

C. he gets extremely bad scores                          D. he gets the worst scores

3The underlined words “high expectations” in this passage means “________”.

4The writer mainly wants to tell us ________.

A. the differences between Chinese education and American education

B. Chinese students are better than American students

C. American parents are not strict enough with their children

D. what's the best way to educate child

2B

3C

4A

Ted hardly gets top scores in his school work. The best he gets is "OK".

Is it too strict in China? Or is it not strict enough in the USA? Maybe both are true. 故选A

Up to two thirds of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slow at school, researchers say.

So how long should young people sleep each night? The answer is between 8 and 10 hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.

But the researchers say many children have missed out on 4,500 hours of sleep by the time they are seven years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their younger children at night any more. The traditional “bedtime story” helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully. Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours' sleep. Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.

German scientists think that your brain keeps working while you're asleep. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out. One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. The result? The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly, suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So, make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!

1What happens to children at school if they don't get enough sleep?

A. They walk more slowly.                                    B. They can relax.

C. They watch more TV.                                        D. They do less well at school.

2The main idea of the second paragraph is     .

A. how much sleep we need                                B. children don't get enough sleep

C. our brains never really go to sleep                 D. TVs and computers are the problem

3How does a bedtime story help children get a good sleep?

A. It helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully.     B. Children lose more sleep.

C. Children have more energy.                                            D. Children get to sleep later.

4Why is it better to sleep in a room without a TV or computer?

A. You can read stories before you go to sleep.     B. You sleep better and get more sleep.

C. You have less energy.                                           D. Your brain works better.

5What did the German scientists' experiment show?

A. Sleep helps children learn to read.               B. Losing sleep means children don't learn well.

C. Your brain works while you are asleep.        D. Parents should read bedtime stories.

根据第三段的“The traditional 'bedtime story' helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully.”

根据第三段的“Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours' sleep.”

将题干中的the German scientists' experiment定位在最后一段,根据suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep可知大脑在睡眠时运转的更好,故答案为C

A few years ago, Masaru Ibuka, the head of Sony, was at a company planning meeting. Suddenly he had an idea. He stopped the meeting an asked everyone what would happen if Sony took away the recording function and speakers and sold headphones with a tape player instead.

Almost everyone thought he was silly. However Ibuka kept his idea and worked at it. The result, of course, turned out to be the successful Sony Walkman.

Good ideas often start with a really silly question. Bill Bowerman was making breakfast one day. As he stood there making cakes for his son, he asked himself what would happen if he put rubber into his mold(模具) Later, he tried it and the result was something like the bottom of most sports shoes we see today. Still, when he took his idea to several shoe companies, he was laughed at. In fact, every single company turned him down. Though rather disappointed, Bowerman went on to form his own company, making NIKE sports shoes.

We know today, of course, that each of these ideas caused a successful thing that has changed the way many of us live. The best questions are usually open-ended and are often silly. A. he didn't make a cake for his son                   B. he had to set up his own company
