ENGLISHASAWORLDLANGUAGETheEnglishlanguagespreadasBritainexpandeditscolonialempirefromthe1600sonandestablishedlegal,military,andeducationalsystemsinmanycountriesalongEnglishlines.BritishexpansionendedafterWorldWarII(1939-1945,whenmanyofitscoloniessoughtindependence.SinceWorldWarIIAmericanEnglishhasdominatedasaworldlanguage,largelybecauseofU.S.economicandpoliticalinfluenceandtheadvanceoftechnology,especiallycomputingandtheInternet.Attheturnofthe21stcentury,Englishprevailedasthemostwidelyusedlanguageinternationally.AtthesametimeasEnglishbecameaworldlanguage,thenumberofEnglishspeakerslearningasecondlanguagedroppedsubstantially.Evenmoredisturbingly,Englishwasblamedforthe“death”ofsomeminoritylanguages,suchasGaelicandvariousAustralianaboriginallanguages(seeAboriginalAustralians.Variousmeasuresareneededtoprotectthesesmallerlanguagesfromdisappearing.TheEnglishlanguageseemssettodominateworldcommunicationsforsometimetocome.Althoughdominancebringswithitadegreeofstandardization,itisnotthecasethatEnglishislosingitsvariety,eitherwithincountriesoracrosstheglobe.Currentresearchsuggeststhat,ratherthandwindling,differencesinvocabulary,grammar,andpronunciationcontinuetoallowpeopletoexpressmultipleidentities.ThefearofsomelinguiststhatmasscommunicationswouldleadtothedeathofEnglishdialectsappearstobeunfounded.
