Saya, the teacher doesn't mind being pinched(), or if the students play in class: she's a robot designed to show children that science and technology can be fun subjects

Saya, a life–like female who started her career as a robot receptionist at Japanese companies and was then reprogrammed to teach, gave a lesson to fifth – graders at Tokyo's Kudan Elementary school after being carried to the podium in the classroom

Professor Hiroshi Kobayashi, who built Saya, says she's not meant to replace human teachers, but to bring the joy of technology to children. “We're not looking at making something that will take over from teachers. Our main reason for building this robot is to use new technology to teach children about technology,” he said. “But Saya may be able to help in schools where there's a shortage of teachers,” he added. “In the countryside and in some small schools, children don't have the chance to come into contact with new technology and also few teachers there can teach these lessonsSo we hoped to be able to develop this robot to be remotely controlled to teach these classes.”

Many of the children were attracted by Saya, and didn’t take their eyes off her throughout the lecture. When class was over, some students pinched her. “ It's so much more fun than regular classes,” said 10-year-old Nanako Iijima

The children's human teacher, however, was not as impressed with the robot as her students. “I am impressed that they've got robots to go this far, but on the other hand they still have a long way to go before they can make it a truly robotic teacher.” Akito Fukuda, the school's science teacher said

Japan, home to almost half of the world's 800,000 industrial robots, expects the industry to expand to $10 billion in the future including models that will be able to care for its fast – growing elderly population

Hey, little buddy, will you support me when I’m getting old?” Han Wenshan, 35 years old, asked his new-born baby as he picked him up at home.

The Chinese tradition of raising sons to support parents in their old age has been weakened by the rapidly growing economy and improved standard of living. As is the case with developed countries, China faces an aging society. People are living longer and having fewer children. Therefore many Chinese families are falling into a 4-2-1 family pattern: a couple raises one child and supports four elderly parents. But few realize this problem.

The aging of the population is a trend that now affects a growing number of countries. Not long ago, the Information Office of the state council, China’s cabinet, issued a white paper on measures China is taking to help its elderly population. The paper said China’s population entered the aging phase(阶段) at the end of the 20th century as the proportion of people aged 60 and above accounted for over 10 percent of the entire population. By the end of 2005, China had nearly 144 million people over 60, accounting for 11 percent of the population, according to the white paper.

An expanding aged population inevitably means that many issues must be settled, as the problem concerns every aspect of society. It puts more pressure on each family, causing disturbing economic consequences and serious social problem concerns every aspect of society. It puts more pressure on each family, causing disturbing economic consequences and serious social problem. It also challenges the labor force supply and the pension(养老金) system.

I used to think that it’s not an issue for me to provide for the aged.” said Han, whose parents and parents-in-law all enjoy pensions and medical insurance. But last year Han’s father suffered a serious illness and afterward Han began to feel the pressure on his shoulders.

Wal-Mart is not just the world's largest retailer (零售商).It's the world's largest company, which sells in three months what number-two retailer Home Depot sells in a year

Wal-Mart exercises its power for just one purpose: to bring the lowest possible prices to its customersAt Wal-Mart, that goal is never reachedThe retailer has a clear policy for suppliers: On basic products that don't change, the price Wal-Mart will pay, and will charge shoppers, must drop year after yearBut what almost no one outside the world of Wal-Mart and none of its 21,000 suppliers know is the high cost of those low pricesTo survive in the face of its pricing demands, makers of everything from bikes to jeans have had to close US plants in favor of obtaining products from abroad

Indeed, the real story of Wal-Mart, the story that never gets told, is the story of the pressure the biggest retailer constantly applies to its suppliers in the name of bringing us "every day low prices"

The giant retailer' s low prices often come with a high costWal-Mart' s pressure can crush the companies it does business with and force them to send jobs overseasAre we shopping our way straight to the unemployment line? Of course, US companies have been moving jobs offshore for decades, long before Wal-Mart was a retailing powerBut there is no question that the chain is helping accelerate the loss of American jobs to low-wage countries such as Thailand

People ask, "How can it be bad for things to come into the US cheaply?" Sure, it's great to have bargainsBut you can' t buy anything if you' re not employed

There is no question that Wal-Mart's drive to squeeze out cost has benefited consumersBy now, it is accepted wisdom that Wal-Mart makes the companies it does business with more efficient and focusedWal-Mart itself is known for continuous, improvement in its ability to handle, move, and track goodsIt is legendary (传奇) for forcing its suppliers to redesign everything from their packaging to their computer systemsIt is also legendary for quite straightforwardly telling them what it will pay for their goods

54. How do suppliers meet the requirements of Wal-Mart?

A. To sell even more goods in three months B. To cut down the employment rate sharply

C. To charge shoppers at a much higher price D. To run the business in a well-organized way

55. Wal-Mart's low price policy results in .

A. more high-paying jobs B. better designed packages

C. bigger profit of its partners D. more jobless American workers

C. The value of Mal-Mart is over assessed D. Wal-Mart is a very demanding company

57. What's the best title for the passage?

A. The Fortune Wal-Mart Makes B. The Wal-Mart you don't Know

D

The majority of us would be happy if three movies we starred in were coming out at the same time. But Ge You, 53, finds it all a bit of a burden. Ge fears air travel, which means he will have to travel thousands of kilometers by train and car to promote the movies.
Chen Kaige’s Sacrifice came out on December 4. Ge plays a doctor who saves an orphan at the cost of his own baby. He also appears as a swindler (骗子) in Jiang Wen’s Let the Bullets Fly, which appears on December 16. Next comes Feng Xiaogang’s romantic comedy, If You Are the One 2 , to open six days later. Ge plays a middle-aged cinematographer (电影摄影师) in search of love.
Ge is best known for playing ordinary characters. In Feng’s popular series of “new year comedies” he gives a convincing sense of “the little man up against it ”.

Teaching kids to fish sometimes puzzles us parents. Now I’d like to give you a few tips.

First of all, start them young.

Get them in a boat, or on a pier(码头), or on the bank at as young an age as you possibly can. Obviously this means being extremely conscious about their safety. Whatever you do, DON’T plan on any fishing yourself. If fishing is going to happen, the fishing will be done by the kids with your help! This lets you pay attention to them and not ignore them while you fish.

Next, make sure you plan the first trips to someplace where you can actually catch a lot of fish. At this point, it doesn’t matter what kind or how big, just make sure they can catch some. A small child’s patience is very short, and waiting 30 minutes for a bite will turn them off in a hurry. You may need to go to a small pond where the fish are dying to eat bread balls. Any type of fish will do. Remember, this is for them, not for you.

As they fish, cheer for every fish they catch. Make a really big deal out of it. Take pictures. And if it’s possible, take some home to clean. Let the child help you clean with a table knife, so he can’t get hurt.

Make sure he makes and sees the connection from catching to cleaning to cooking. As soon as you have the fish cleaned, it’s into the kitchen to start cooking. Make him flour and cornmeal the fish. Let him see the fish cooking, and talk about how good they are. Then when it’s ready, make sure you brag(吹嘘) on the fact that he (or she ) caught these fish, and “aren’t they good?”

In this way, I’m sure your kids will be interested in fishing and good at fishing.

书面表达(满分30分)

China is now more and more involved in international events, so it is necessary for us to improve the qualities of the citizens as manners play an important role in international communication.

Sometimes some people don’t behave properly in our daily lives. For example, spitting in public places can be seen somewhere. The flowers in public gardens are picked. What is worse, rubbish and plastic bags are thrown on the ground in the street.

In my opinion, these bad behaviors will make bad impressions upon visitors to China, which will ruin the good reputation of China as a large country with a long history. So all people should be taught to be well-behaved and every one of us should form good habits from now on.
