The number of people using WeChat, a voice-message service developed by the Internet giant Tencent Holding Ltd, has hit 300 million in the less than two years since the service was released, the Shenzhen-based company said on Wednesday.
Analysts said WeChat is “very likely” to gain another 100 million users over the next 12 months.
“If the number of mobile Internet users continues to expand at the present speed---- if it hits 550 million by the end of this year---- the number of users will certainly rise to 400 million, ” said You Tianyu, senior analyst at the market research company iRearch Consulting Group.
WeChat’s prospect(前景) will be closely aligned(使一致) to the number of people using mobile devices(设备) in China,he added.
By the end of last year, 420 million Chinese people were using the Internet with moblie devices, up 18 percent year on year, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.
WeChat was launched on Jan.12,2011, and took more than a year to draw 100 million users. By September, it had reached the 200 million mark, said Tencent.
Tencent QQ, the most popular online-chatting service in China, is actively encouraging its users to try WeChat, said You. He noted that QQ has more than 700 million users, a fact that made it easier to promote WeChat.
WeChat is also posing challenges to older means of telecommunications, such as text messages and phone calls.

Local authorities in China have rushed to seal（密封）up some meat products in fast food chains, including McDonald’s and KFC, after one of their supplier(供应商) was accused of selling no longer fresh meat.
The move came in response to media and public outcry after a Shanghai TV station exposed Shanghai exposed Shanghai Husi Food Co., Ltd., a supplier to a string of fast food brands, including McDonald’s and Yum Brands., for selling products with rotten(变质的)meat and meat beyond its expiration date(有效期).
The expose made Shanghai authorities prevent production at Shanghai Husi, a unit of US-based OSI Group, on Sunday, while cities and provinces across China on Monday moved to seal Husi supplies at local food chains.
The expose was another blow to Western fast food chains such as McDonald’s and KFC, which have been involved in a number of food safety scandals(丑闻）involving suppliers over the years.
China Food and Drug Administration on Monday ordered local authorities to investigate all the food factories with investment from OSI Group in the provinces of Hebei, Shangdong, Henan, Guangdong and Yunnan.
