The Differences Between South and North in China

Have you ever noticed the differences between South and North in China? In general, they are different in some aspects, such as the food, the physique, the language and etc. I’d like to guide you to enjoy four contrasts of the two areas.

First of all, the food. In south, the climate is warmer and more rainy so that the rice which is fit for the climate there is chosen as the main food, and it leads to the habitat of northerners to eat rice. However in north, there is less rain and lower temperature that results in the dry land that is available for wheat growing.

Then comes to the second difference: the physique. In general, southerners are shorter while northerners are taller. According to figures, the average height of men in Northeast and North China is 1.693 meters, while it is 1.647 in areas of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan. The reason, except from the different eating habits, is the climate, too. The hot weather in south leads to the faster metabolism of human, but the cold weather in north slows it down and makes people spend more time home rather than doing outdoor activities.

The third one is the language difference. Language system in south is much complicated decided by geography, hilly and rugged. Even within the same dialect area, there can be a big difference. Take the southern Fujian dialect for example. It includes languages of Fuzhou, Xiamen, Putian, and so on, which are various and complex. But northern languages are so more single that most areas belong to the northern dialect. There is little difficulty to communicate in the area from Harbin to Kunming, where the straight-line distance is more than 3000 kilometers.

The last difference is presented in industry. Because of convenient traffic, advanced technology and considerable funds, the light industry is much more well-developed in the southeast coastal areas. While in north China, there are abundant resources of coal, oil, iron ore, etc., leads to the development of heavy industry.

Besides, south and north in China also have differences in architecture, politics, economy, culture and so on, with different reasons behind. Just because of these, the two areas take their respective advantages, and complement each other, to make our land diverse and plentiful.
