foodhandedoutincontempt嗟来之食
OneyearduringtheSpringandAutumnPeriod春秋时期,770-476BC,therewasatheQiState齐国wasseverelystrickendbyafamine.春秋时代，有一年齐国发生大饥荒。
QianAoqiánào黔敖,averyrichbutarrogantmantooktheoccasiontoshowcasehisgenerositythroughpreparingfoodbytheroadsideandgivingittothepassingrefugeesincharity.
有一位叫做黔敖有钱贵族，在街边准备食物分发给来往的难民，以显示自己的慷慨。Amanwithshabbyclotheshappenedtowalkbywithhisshoestrailingalong,hewassohungryasnottoopenhiseyes.
有一个饥民，用衣袖蒙着脸，拖着鞋，饿得眼睛都睁不开的样子，慢慢地走过来。Seeingthepoorman,QianAoheldthefoodbylefthandandthedrinkbyrighthand,andshoutedathim,"Hi,cometoeat!”
黔敖见了，就左手拿着吃的，右手捧着喝的，向他喊道：“喂，来吃吧!”Hearingtheword,themanglaredhiseyesandsaid,“ItisbecauseIamnotwillingtoeatthefoodhandedoutincontemptthatIhavebeenfamishedtosuchadegree."
那人一听这话，立即瞪着眼睛，说道：“我就是因为不吃‘嗟来之食，才饿到这般地步的。"
ThoughQianAomadeanapologytohimforthat,themanstillresolutelyrefusedtoeatthefoodandthushediedofhungerintheend.尽管黔敖向他道歉，那人仍然坚决不吃，终于饿死了。
Thissetphrasenowextensivelydenotesthedisrespectfulaims.Thisstorymeansthatapersonwhohasastrongsenseofself-respectwouldratherdieofhungerthanbedespised.
此故事讲的是一个怀有强烈自尊心的人，宁可饿死也不肯接受人轻视。现在这个成语泛指带有侮辱性的施舍。

JiangYanlivedduringtheLiangdynastyoftheNorthernandSouthernDynastiesPeriod,intheareanowknownasHenanprovince.南北朝时，有一位名叫江淹的人，居住在现在的河南省。

江淹出身贫寒，但他十分刻苦，所以后来便当上了一位本地的高官。

江淹十分有文采，在诗词歌赋都十分优秀，在当时的学者中都极富盛名。

有一天，江淹在凉亭里睡觉，做了一个梦，梦中有一个叫郭璞的人对他说：“我有一支笔放在你那里已经很多年了，现在应该是还给我的时候了。”

江淹摸了摸怀里，果然掏出一支五色笔来，于是他就把笔还给郭璞。

从此以后，江淹就再也写不出如同年少时写的美妙的文章了。

因此，人们都说江郎自从放弃了他的五色笔之后，他的才华已经用尽了。
