THEAMERICANGOTHICOFGORDONPARKS~PostedbyGeorgePendle,January20th2015In1950,theLifemagazinephotographerGordonParksreturnedtohishometownofFortScott,Kansas,tocreateaphotoessayonsegregationinAmericanschools.ParkswastheonlyAfrican-AmericanphotographeronthestaffatLifeandhewasnostrangertothesubject.Theyoungestof15childrenborntoatenantfarmerandamaid,hehadattendedthesegregatedPlazaSchool,whereanall-blackstudentbodyhadbeentaughtbyanall-blackfaculty.FortheyoungParksthishadseemedquitenormal,ashadtheblackMainStreetthatexistedononesideoftherailroadtracksandthewhiteMainStreetthatexistedontheother.Butby1950thisforcedseparationwasstartingtosplinter(分裂andKansaswasatthecentreofagrowingnationaldebateoversegregation:in1954theSupremeCourt
