Dragon boat racing is an indispensable part of the festival. As the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped canoes pulling the oars harmoniously and hurriedly, accompanied by rapid drums, speeding toward their destination.

元宵节 the Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival has been part of Chinese New Year celebration since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-221 AD). Usually held on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar, it marks the end of New Year festivities.

It is said that the holiday evolved from an ancient Chinese belief that celestial spirits could be seen flying about in the light of the first full moon of the lunar calendar. To aid them in their search for the spirits they used torches. These torches gave way to lanterns of every shape, size and color.

The Lantern Festival is also popularly referred to as the Chinese Valentine’s Day because in days of old it gave boys and girls a rare chance to go out in the evening. Today, lantern festivals are held each year in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan to mark the end of Chinese New Year celebrations. Competitions are held to select he best lanterns.

Lanterns come in all shapes and sizes. Some are created in the form of animals, insects, flowers, people or even machines or buildings. Others depict scene from popular stories teaching filial piety and traditional values. A favorite subject is the zodiac animal of the year—which in 2014 is the horse.

The 15th day of the first lunar month is the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival. It is so called because the first lunar month is called “Yuan” month and in the ancient times people called night “xiao”. It is traditional to admire lanterns at the festival. The custom started from the Han dynasty, and has a history of more than 2000 years. In the night, every place is decorated with lanterns and colorful streamers and there is a bustling atmosphere. It is also a traditional custom for Chinese to eat “ Tang Yuan” at this time. Eating “Tang Yuan” on the first night with a full moon in a year is to wish that family members will remain united and happy.

Tangyuan is said to symbolize both the first full moon and family unity and completeness.

Spring Festival

It was recorded that Chinese began to celebrate the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, from about 2,000 BC, though the celebrations were held on different times under different emperors. People didn’t start to celebrate the Chinese New Year on the first day of the lunar calendar until Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty. Its origin is too old to be traced. Several explanations have been around. All agree, however, that the character Nian, which means “year” in modern Chinese, was originally the name of a monster beast which preyed on people on the eve of a new year. The term “guo nian”, which may literally mean “Survive the Nian”, becomes today “Celebrate the New Year” as the word “guo” in Chinese having both the meaning of “pass of time” and “observe”. The custom of putting up red paper and firing fire-crackers is still around. However, people today have long forgotten why they are doing all this, except that they feel the colour and the sound add to the excitement of the celebration (add to the happy atmosphere of the New Year).
