When you have completed your college education, you will look for a job suited to your training, interests, and ambition. In most cases, you will visit a likely employer's office and complete an application form for the position in which you are interested. The employer may then make a decision regarding your ability on the basis of your application form and interview.

Throughout your lifetime, however, you may find yourself in other job-hunting situations in an attempt to improve your position. As you gain experience, you are likely to become ambitious for better and better jobs. These better jobs often require letters of application and summaries of your background and experience. Therefore, your writing skills may play an important part in obtaining the job you desire.

In any job-hunting situation, there are a number of ways you may use your writing skills: to complete an application form, prepare a resume, write an application letter, or write employment follow-up letters. Task 2

The market is a concept. If you are growing tomatoes in your backyard for sale you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbor and some to the manager of the local supermarket. But in either case, you are producing for the market. Your efforts are being directed by the market. If people stop buying tomatoes, you will stop producing them.

If you take care of a sick person to earn money, you are producing for the market. If your father is a steelworker or a taxi driver or a doctor or a grocer, he is producing goods or service for the market.

When you spend your income, you are buying things from the market. You may spend money in stores, supermarkets and gas stations. Still you are buying from the market. When the local grocer hires you to drive the delivery truck, he is buying your labor in the labor market.

The market may seem to be something abstract. But for each person or businessman who is making and selling something, it is concrete. If nobody buys your tomatoes, it won't be long before you get the message. The market is telling you something. It's telling you that you are using energies and resources in doing something the market doesn't want you to do.

46 Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? ______

   A. Selling and Buying

   B. What Is the Market?

   C. Everything You Do Is Producing for the Market

   D. What Can the Market Do for You?

49 The word "concrete" in the last paragraph may most probably mean ______.

   A. serious         B. important           C. necessary           D. real

50 In what way is the market very real for each person or businessman who is making and selling something? ______

   A. It tells you what to produce.

   B. It directs you how to grow tomatoes.

   C. It provides you with everything you need.

   D. It helps you save money.

Task 3

What is your favourite colour? Do you like yellow, orange, or red? If you do, you must be an optimist(乐观主义者), a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grey and blue? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be a pessimist(悲观主义者). At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colours preference, as well as the effect that colours have on human beings. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favourite colour as we grow up—we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.

Colours do influence our moods—there is no doubt about it. A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides (自杀) than any other bridge in the area—until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell down sharply; perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.

Light and bright colours make people not only happier but more active. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.

51 The sentence "you would rather follow than lead"  in Paragraph 1 means that you would ______.

   A. like to lead followers

   B. be afraid of following others

   C. be a member rather than a leader

   D. like to be a leader rather than a follower

52 If one enjoys life, one is sure to prefer ______.

   A. red to yellow                            B. blue to orange

   C. blue to yellow                           D. red to grey

53 Which of the following statements is true? ______

   A. People's preference of one colour to another is instinct.

   B. People's preference of one colour to another is acquired as they grow up.

   C. Factory workers meet fewer accidents when their machines are painted grey.

   D. More people happen to love brown because they saw it when they were born.

54 Those who committed suicide preferred the bridge over the Thames River to others because of its ______.

   A. shape           B. colour              C. structure            D. material

55 The main idea of the passage is that ______.

   A. colours affect people's mood

   B. colours affect people's character

   C. bright colours make people more active

   D. colours preference shows people's courage

Task 4

Are some people born clever and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent, our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people is, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in their intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays an important part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.

56 If a child is born with low intelligence, he can ______.

   A. not reach his intelligence in his life

   B. go beyond his intelligence limits in rich surroundings

   C. still become a genius if he should be given special education

   D. become a genius

57 "If we take two unrelated people at random from the population" (Para. 2) means if we ______.

   A. choose two persons with different intelligence

   B. choose two persons who are relative

   C. take out two persons of close relationship

   D. pick any two persons

58 The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows ______.

   A. the part that birth plays

   B. the importance of their positions

   C. the role of environment on intelligence

   D. the importance of their intelligence

59 The writer is in favor of the view that man's intelligence is given to him ______.

   A. neither at birth nor through environment

   B. both at birth and through environment

   C. through environment

   D. at birth
