一、词根habit
词根habit:表示居住
1、
habit:n.习惯
e.g.
We must get rid of some bad habits.
We must kick the bad habits.
我们要改掉坏习惯。
2、
habitual:习惯的、典型的
habitual thoughts:惯性思维
habitual criminals:惯犯
e.g.
Whorf believes that the structure of the language determines the structure of habitual thoughts in a society.
沃尔夫认为,一个社会中的语言结构决定了惯性思维的结构。
3、
inhabit:(动植物)的居住或者栖息于某地
in(在里面)+habit(居住)=居住在里面=居住在某地、动植物栖息在某地
e.g.
People should raise awareness about the vital importance【至关重要】 of the millions of species that inhabit our planet’s soils,forests,oceans,coral reefs and mountains.
公众应该认识到,栖息在我们星球的土壤、森林、海洋、珊瑚礁和山区数以万计的物种,是多么至关重要。
4、
inhabitant:居民或者栖息的动物
e.g.Net inhabitants should not let security measures affect their joy of surfing the Internet.
网民不应该让安全措施影响他们上网的乐趣。
5、
habitat:栖息地
e.g.The place is the habitat for giant panda.
这个地方是大熊猫的栖息地。
二、词根ceive/cept
词根ceive/cept:表示拿
1、
conceive:怀孕
con(一起)+ceive(拿)=把种子拿来和母体放在一起=孕育
e.g.
The study shows that the grandchildren of mice fed a high-fat diet grow up fat,so your fate may have been selected when you were conceived by your mom.
调查显示,摄入高脂肪食物的老鼠的后代长大以后也很胖,所以说你的命运可能早在你被母亲怀上的时候就已经注定了。

conceived:
①怀孕
②想象、构想、设想
1)后面可以跟从句
e.g.
We could not conceive that they would do such a silly thing.
我们想不到他们竟然会做那样的蠢事。
2)可以加上介词of,表示构想、设想
e.g.
He conceived the idea of transforming the old power station into an arts center.
他想出了一个把就发电站改成文化中心的想法。
3、
conception:n.怀孕,构思或者构想
区别conception和concept
conception:thinking of an idea,plan,etc
表示思考一个想法或者方案,即构思
concept:a general notion of something abstract
表示对抽象事物的大体概念
三、词根empt
词根empt:表示拿或者买
1、
exemplify:举例说明,是……的典型
ex(出来)+empl(拿)+ify(动词后缀)=拿出来,做典型=举例说明,是……的典型。
e.g.The Award program was established by The Educational Foundation to recognize these teachers,who exemplify excellence in their profession.
这个奖项是由教育基金创办来认可这一类教师的,这些老师都是具有优秀专业技能的典范。
To exemplify what I mean,let us look at our annual import of crude oil.
为了说明我的意思,我们来看一看每年的原油进口量。

exemplary:典范的,可以做榜样的
exemplary citizen:模范公民
3、
exclude:排除
exclusive:独享的,专有的
exclusive sponsorship:独家赞助
注意:exclusive还可以做名词,此时表示“独家新闻”
四、词根tain
词根tain:表示保持或者维持
1、
retain:保留
re(向后)+tain(保持)=留下来=保留
e.g.Now she works a day a week from home,and a day in the office.This is great for her,and for us as we retain someone highly qualified.
现在她每个星期在家工作一天,在办公室工作一天。这样对她和对我们都好,因为我们同时也能保留一个完全可以胜任工作的员工。

detain:①拘留,阻碍
de(向下)+tain(拿)=把……拿下=扣押、拘留或者阻碍
e.g.Police said Friday they have detained three possible suspects in the March 19 shooting.
警方星期五宣布,他们已经拘留了3名和3月19日枪击案有关的犯罪嫌疑人。

detainee:被拘留的人
-ee表示:“人”
employee:雇员
trainee:受训人员
referee:裁判

ditain:②拖延,耽误
e.g.The teachers began on time,ended on time,and left the room without saying a word more to their students,very seldom being detained by questioners.
老师们按时开始,按时结束,不和同学多说一句话就离开教室,很少会被提问题的人拦下来。

sustain:支持、承受
sus(在下面)+tain(拿)=从下面拿住=表示一种支撑作用=支撑、承受
sustain life:维持生命
sustain weight:支持一定的重量
6、
sustainable:可持续的
sustainable development:可持续发展
e.g.The sustainable development is often taken as the sole measure of progress without a proper appreciation of historical and cultural perspectives.
可持续发展经常被认为是获得进步的唯一方法,而忽略了对历史和文化方面的适度考虑。
五、词根strain
词根strain:表示拉紧
1、
strain:①拉紧,压力、扭伤
e.g.Their marriage is under great strain at the moment.
他们的婚姻关系目前非常紧张。
under strain:处在重压之下
put a strain on:给……施加压力
a leg strain:腿部拉伤
2、
strain:②动植物的品种或者疾病的类型
a new strain of flu virus:流感病毒的一种新的病株
3、
restrain:阻止或者抑制
re(向后)+strain(拉紧)=向后拉=阻止
①阻止
尤其指stop sb./sth. by using physical forces通过武力来进行制止
e.g.The prisoner had to be restrained by the police.
②抑制
主要是对自己感情的压抑
restrain anger:抑制怒火
unrestrained:无拘无束
unrestrained life:无拘无束的生活
六、词根duce
词根duce:引导
1、
deduce:推论,推论
de(向下)+duce(引导)=向下引导=推论,是一个比较正式的用词
e.g.He has to deduce what he can from the few scanty【很少的】clues available.
他不得不尽自己所能从很少的线索中进行推断。
2、
induce:诱导,劝诱
in(向里面)+duce(引导)=向里面引导=诱导
illness induced by overwork:由于过度工作引发的疾病
inducement:n.诱因,刺激物
七、词根fact/fect:做defect:n.缺点,缺陷
1、
de(变坏)+fect(做)→做不好→缺点,缺陷
visual defect:视觉缺陷
physical defect:生理缺陷
birth defect:先天缺陷,出生缺陷
e.g.About 12 million rural Chinese women of child-bearing age will receive medical aids from the government this year to help prevent birth defects in the future babies.
今年大约有1200万处在生育年龄的农村妇女将接受到来自政府的饮料救助,用来预防以后可能出现的婴儿出生缺陷。

fac(做)+ility→设备是做出来的→设备
sports facility:体育设备

fac(做)+ilitate→通过不断的做来提高方便度→使方便
e.g.Technology has facilitated the sharing of information and the delivery of information.
技术使得信息分享和传递更为便利。

feasible:adj.可行的
feas(做)+ible(可……的)→可以做的→可行的
feasible plan:可行性计划
feasible suggestion:可行的建议
八、词根pel/plus:驱赶,推动
1、
compel:v.迫使,强迫
com(完全的)+pel(推动)→使劲地推动→迫使
e.g.This economic document represents an unbounded congressional authority:the ability to compel Americans to purchase an expensive health insurance.
这项经济文件代表了一项不受制约的国会权利,即迫使美国民众去购买昂贵的健康保险的行政权利。

expel:v.驱逐,除名
ex(出去)+pel(驱动)→赶出去见他→驱逐,除名
expel a student from University:把学生从大学中除名

propel:v.推动
pro(向前)+pel(驱动)→向前驱动→推动
self-propelled vehicles:自驱车
self-propelled:adj.自行驱使的

im(在里面)+pulse(驱动)→内在驱动→冲动

hostility:n.敌意
hostile:adj.充满敌意的,不友善的

appeal:V.呼吁,要求
ap(加强)+peal(驱动)→强烈的驱动→呼吁
appeal for calm:呼吁大家冷静
appeal to:吸引
e.g.Reading E-books has developed into part of our daily life,which is particularly appealing to young users,who are the main part of the users of electronic products.

plunge:V.纵身投入,陷入;猛跌
e.g.Wall Stree plunged on Monday.

adorable:adj.可爱的
adorable baby:可爱的婴儿
adorable kitten/puppy:可爱的小猫/小狗
adore:v.非常喜爱,热爱
e.g.I simply adore his music.

e.g.I really adore you.
我非常仰慕你。
9、
casualty:n.伤亡
casualty figure:伤亡人数
e.g.The traditional markets retain their appeal for the many Chinese who still prefer fresh food like live fish,ducks,chinkens over packaged or frozen goods.
传统市场始终保持着对很多中国人的吸引力,这些中国人相对于包装好或者冷冻好的食品,更喜欢新鲜食品,例如活鱼,活鸭或者活鸡。
