Googles parent Alphabet Inc. said that its stratospheric (平流层的) balloons are now delivering the internet to remote areas of Puerto Rico, where cellphone towers were knocked out by Hurricane Maria.

Two of the search giants Project Loon balloons are already over the country. They

are enabling texts, emails and basic web access to AT&T customers with mobile phones that use its 4G LTE network.

The balloons, more than 60,000 feet above land are called HBAL199 and HBAL237. They use an algorithm (运算法则) that puts them in the best position to deliver signal by

rising and falling to ride wind currents. They are solar-powered and only provide signal during the day.

Several more balloons are on their way from Nevada. Alphabet has been given authority by the Federal Communications Commission to send up to 30 balloons to serve the hard-hit area, according to Libby Leahy, spokeswoman for Alphabets X, Alphabets division for futuristic technologies.

The head of Project Loon Alastair Westgarth said in a blog post that Project Loon is still an experimental technology and were not quite sure how well it will work, though it has been tested since last year in Peru following flooding there.

Hurricane Maria destroyed the U.S. land of 3.4 million people since its landing last month. Spokesman Ricardo Rossello said the number of death had risen to 49. Less than a fifth of the island has electricity, half its cellphone towers are still not functioning, schools are closed and more than 4,000 are in shelters, according to a government website.

AT&T spokesman Jeffrey Kobs said the company has set up 14 temporary cell sites, and since Friday more than 60 percent of the population was connected via mobile network, partly due to the help of government groups and Project Loon.

Were all looking for the right answers. We look in self-help books and churches and seek out teachers and therapists (治疗学家) and even hire fortune-tellers. But what if I told you the best way to find what youre looking for is to stop looking? Seriously. Sometimes

we look and search too much. Our minds are filled with knowledge and facts but we never find peace because we cant stop thinking!

Many Buddhist teachers refer to this phenomenon asmonkey-mind because its similar to the way a monkey will swing from tree to tree tasting a banana from each one before dropping it and moving to the next tree. Like these monkeys, we often jump from thought to thought without ever really being in the present moment.

The cure for this is to make a conscious (有意识的) effort to quiet the mind. Or take

what I like to refer to as a mental vacation. There are many different techniques for this but the easiest way is to find a quiet place, close your eyes and simply concentrate on your breathing. Thats it.

Now, when your mind starts to wander(and it will), do not be too much concerned. Let that thought float away like a cloud in the sky and bring your attention back to your breathing. The goal is to quiet your mind as much as possible. With a little bit of practice youll get good at this! When you first start out try it for five or ten minutes. Even in this short amount of time youll notice a difference in the way you think and feel. But with

daily practice youll see major improvements in your physical and mental health.

There are many reasons for this but all we really need to know is that a calm mind is a vibrant mind. It is alive and full of ideas with creative energy. It has the ability to perfectly control millions of activities happening at the same time without any conscious effort.

So next time you cant find the answer youre looking for, remember to stop swinging

from tree to tree. Take a deep breath, quiet your mind and enjoy every precious minute of your mental vacation.

27. According to the text, in what way are we humans similar to monkeys?

A. We like jumping from tree to tree.

B. We have a taste for fresh bananas.

C. We feel a strong desire for knowledge.

D. We keep jumping from thought to thought.

28. What does the author suggest to find our peace of mind?

A. Solve every problem we have.

B. Relax and focus on our breathing.

C. Swing from tree to tree like a monkey.

D. Take a few days off and have a vacation.

29. The underlined word vibrant (Paragraph 5) is closest in meaning to .

A. lively B. peaceful C. curious D. complex

30. The text is mainly about .

A. The benefits of taking vacations.

B. The importance of peace of mind.

C. The cure for monkey mind.

D. The risks of monkey mind.

It is important that you teach your baby to read as young as possible. Why? Because

there is simply no better time in a childs life for learning than when they are between 3 months old and their 5th birthday. 31 As a result, they are sponges(海绵) for knowledge. Moreover, being able to read is the basis for any successful education, so the earlier they

start, the better. All too often, parents leave educating their children up to schools, which probably explains why the United States is currently ranked 18th in its rate of reading and writing.

Teaching your baby to read provides brain exercise during the very time when his or her brain is developing. It has also been shown to increase the babys IQ. The sooner they begin to read, the sooner they can begin to learn other subjects. This way, by the time your children begin school, they will already know whats being taught, and will be put on the fast track. 32

One of the cases that really began to bring the fact that babies can learn to read to the publics attention was 17-month-old Elizabeth Barrett. 33 She was given a series of words and even sentences that she could read quite well. Her parents had been reading to her since she was born and had provided her with a very early education.

Reading is the most important thing to teach babies at a young age. 34 Learning can be fun at such an early age, and it can be accomplished so easily that they wont have to struggle in order to learn. In fact, when you use the proper materials, they will look forward to learning.

If youre interested in teaching your baby to read, the best way to start is by spending

just a few minutes a day. 35 Simply show your baby matching picture on the opposite side. There are also videos that help to teach babies to read.

There is no better time to teach your baby to read than the present. Begin by looking for learning materials that your baby might enjoy.

The familiar yellow school bus is the largest system of mass transportation in the US and every school day transports roughly 25 million young people to school and home again

after the school day ends. Meanwhile, they are the safest method for getting kids to and from school, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Children are 70 times more likely to arrive at school safely on the school bus than if they had traveled to school driving themselves or riding with friends.

These school buses meet more of the nations motor vehicle safety standards than any

other vehicles on the road. Also, several new technologies available today are making school buses even safer, such as video cameras on the inside and outside, stop arm cameras, GPS

tracking and collision lessening systems. Another safety tool on school buses is high seat backs, closely-spaced seats and energy-absorbing seating.

But even the safeness of school buses would not completely sum up why children are safer when riding the big, yellow bus. The bus is only as safe as the professional men and women who drive them. All drivers must obtain a Class B or C Commercial Drivers

License (CDL). They are randomly tested for alcohol and drugs, usually have their driving

record checked, and are given the same review for criminal history as teachers and other employees who have contact with students. In order to serve as a school bus driver, most applicants are required to successfully complete a training course, along with instruction in the classroom and behind the wheel.

School buses are safe for the environment, not only because each bus replaces 36 passenger cars that would, but for the buses, be on the road taking and picking up school children. Additionally, school buses use alternative green fuels like natural gas, and electric power.

Todd Monteferrario, President of the National School Transportation Association, said parents should remember that the safest and smartest choice is to put their children on the big yellow bus when they can.
