One morning as I was sitting outside enjoying my coffee, I noticed a pigeon on the road in front of my home.

After a few minutes of watching the bird, I went back inside to refill my coffee cup. With coffee in hand, I sat down on my bench and noticed a feather lying on the ground between my feet. I leaned over to pick it up, thinking how nice that the pigeon had left me a gift. But as I looked up again, what I saw stunned me. Hundreds of feathers now covered the ground. The beautiful pigeon lay dead before my eyes----most likely hit by a car.

In tears I went back inside to get a tool to bury it. This pigeon’s life reflected my own. I had been hurt at work and would never be able to go back to my job again. I decided that this poor animal was going to be buried with dignity, so I went to find something meaningful that I could bury along with the pigeon.

After several minutes of searching, I found a ribbon(缎带) on which was printed, “Who you are makes a difference.” It had been given to me by a group leader at the prison where I used to work and was involved in a special program that encouraged the prisoners to become more responsible for their actions and helped motivate(激发) them toward more productive lives.

Upon returning to the woods with the ribbon in hand, I was shocked to find the pigeon gone. Obviously it was taken away by a cat. There I stood, tears falling from my eyes, no bird to bury, a green ribbon in my hand. But the words on the ribbon stood out to me as never before: “Who you are makes a difference.”

27.We can infer from the last sentence that _________.

A.The writer changed the attitude toward life B.the writer didn’t care about the pigeon at all

C.The writer hated the cat very much D.The writer missed his leader

Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to take care of them will lead a different kind of life. The expressions, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy life.

Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. The hard work can make people very tired, like a dog. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.

Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.

Husbands and wives use doghouse when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for forgetting their wedding anniversary(结婚周年纪念). She might tell him that he is in the doghouse and treats him badly. However, the husband may decide that it is best to leave things alone and not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie.

Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.

If you are like most English learners, you may be familiar with this: You think you understand a topic. Yet when asked to use what you have learnt, you are not able to remember the information. Not being able to retrieve(数据检索) new ideas could happen on a test or even in a conversation.

Sarah Lynn, an educational consultant() and teacher, thinks English learners can improve their ability to remember and use new words by testing themselves. She adds that self-testing improves retrieval-- the ability to use and remember new words.

Lynn is not the only expert who recommends(推荐) self-testing. A paper in Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition says one benefit of testing practice is that it improves retrieval. Retrieving information once makes retrieving that information easier in the future. In addition, the paper adds, when students test themselves as part of studying, they learn what they dont know. When students know what they dont understand, they can pay attention to overcoming their weaknesses. Lynn recommends that learners test themselves by getting away from what they are studying. Then, they should test themselves by thinking about what they have learnt. She recommends that learners make themselves write or speak something. Lynn suggests reading something or watching a video on the topic, then getting rid of the reading or video material and summarizing it. This will allow learners to test what they know. Next time you are studying English, try to test yourself. But dont just think that you can read something once or twice and fully understand it. Even you highlight important points or set down notes in a class, you probably dont fully understand what you learnt. After all, Olympic athletes cant learn how to swim or run just from reading a book. They have to practice swimming or running every day for years. They often compete in races to test their skills.

32.Whats the common situation faced by English learners?

A. They fail to come up with new ideas.

B. They dont learn as well as they think

C. They are not familiar with a certain topic

D. they dont know how to improve their test-taking skills.

33.Which is the advice given by Lynn about self-testing?

A. Challenge yourself to learn from videos

B. Remember whats learnt by repetitive reciting

C. Question your teachers on what you doubt bravely.

D. Recall whats learnt with the book closed.

34.Why are Olympic athletes mentioned?

A. To stress the importance of practice. B. To make people confident of learning.

C. To warn English learners not to be proud. D. To show how to be successful athletes.

35.Whats the best title of the passage?

A. Learning actually takes effort most B. Memorize more new words

C. Improve English by Self-testing D. Whats self-testing

第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Being a good friend isn’t always easy, but taking the time to develop a lasting friendship is worth the effort. As the years pass, you will realize that each friendship you keep is priceless. 36 . To be a good friend and deepen a friendship, just follow these steps.

Keep your promises.

Don’t ever make a promise that you can’t keep. If you say you’ll hang out with a friend and an unexpected situation appears, explain the situation. Give your friend a gift and tell him or her you are sorry. Nobody is perfect, and it’s okay if you break a promise once in a blue mood. 37

Apologize when you’ve made a mistake.

38 Though your friend won’t be happy that you made a mistake, he or she will be very pleased that you admit it instead of just pretending that nothing is wrong.

39

To be truly supportive, you will have to be able to watch out for your friend when he/she is having a hard time. If you feel that your friend is getting into some trouble, help him or her away from the situation by not being afraid to speak up about it.

Give your friend some space when he or she needs it.

Part of being supportive means supporting the fact that your friend won’t always want to spend time with you. Learn to step back and give your friend space. 40 Don’t be jealous (嫉妒的) if your friend has lots of other friends.

A. However, don’t make it a regular thing.

B. Help your friend deal with his or her problems.

C. Learn to forgive your friend and move forward.

D. Of course, to have a good friend, you must be one.

E. If you want your friend to trust you, you can’t act like you’re perfect.

F. Understand if your friend wants to be alone or to hang out with other people.

G. Take the time to truly understand your friend when he or she is talking to you.
