Suchstoriessetusthinking,wonderingwhatweshoulddoundersimilarcircumstances.Whatevents,whatexperiences,whatassociationsshouldwecrowdintothoselasthoursasmortalbeings,whatregrets?
SometimesIhavethoughtitwouldbeanexcellentruletoliveeachdayasifweshoulddietomorrow.Suchanattitudewouldemphasizesharplythevaluesoflife.Weshouldliveeachdaywithgentleness,vigorandakeennessofappreciationwhichareoftenlostwhentimestretchesbeforeusintheconstantpanoramaofmoredaysandmonthsandyearstocome.Therearethose,ofcourse,whowouldadopttheEpicureanmottoof“Eat,drink,andbemerry”.Butmostpeoplewouldbechastenedbythecertaintyofimpendingdeath.
Instoriesthedoomedheroisusuallysavedatthelastminutebysomestrokeoffortune,butalmostalwayshissenseofvaluesischanged.Hebecomesmoreappreciativeofthemeaningoflifeanditspermanentspiritualvalues.Ithasoftenbeennotedthatthosewholive,orhavelived,intheshadowofdeathbringamellowsweetnesstoeverythingtheydo.
Mostofus,however,takelifeforgranted.Weknowthatonedaywemustdie,butusuallywepicturethatdayasfarinthefuture.Whenweareinbuoyanthealth,deathisallbutunimaginable.Weseldomthinkofit.Thedaysstretchoutinanendlessvista.Sowegoaboutourpettytasks,hardlyawareofourlistlessattitudetowardlife.
Thesamelethargy,Iamafraid,characterizestheuseofallourfacultiesandsenses.Onlythedeafappreciatehearing,onlytheblindrealizethemanifoldblessingsthatlieinsight.Particularlydoesthisobservationapplytothosewhohavelostsightandhearinginadultlife.Butthosewhohaveneversufferedimpairmentofsightorhearingseldommakethefullestuseoftheseblessedfaculties.Theireyesandearstakeinallsightsandsoundshazily,withoutconcentrationandwithlittleappreciation.Itisthesameoldstoryofnotbeinggratefulforwhatwehaveuntilweloseit,ofnotbeingconsciousofhealthuntilweareill.
Ihaveoftenthoughtitwouldbeablessingifeachhumanbeingwerestrickenblindanddeafforafewdaysatsometimeduringhisearlyadultlife.Darknesswouldmakehimmoreappreciativeofsight;silencewouldteachhimthejoysofsound.

Itisnotdifficulttoimagineaworldshortofambition.Itwouldprobablybeakinderworld:withoutdemands,withoutabrasions,withoutdisappointments.Peoplewouldhavetimeforreflection.Suchworkastheydidwouldnotbeforthemselvesbutforthecollectivity.Competitionwouldneverenterin.conflictwouldbeeliminated,tensionbecomeathingofthepast.Thestressofcreationwouldbeatanend.Artwouldnolongerbetroubling,butpurelycelebratoryinitsfunctions.Longevitywouldbeincreased,forfewerpeoplewoulddieofheartattackorstrokecausedbytumultuousendeavor.Anxietywouldbeextinct.Timewouldstretchonandon,withambitionlongdepartedfromthehumanheart.Ah,howunrelievedboringlifewouldbe!
Thereisastrongviewthatholdsthatsuccessisamyth,andambitionthereforeasham.Doesthismeanthatsuccessdoesnotreallyexist?Thatachievementisatbottomempty?Thattheeffortsofmenandwomenareofnosignificancealongsidetheforceofmovementsandeventsnownotallsuccess,obviously,isworthesteeming,norallambitionworthcultivating.Whichareandwhicharenotissomethingonesoonenoughlearnsonone‟sown.Buteventhemostcynicalsecretlyadmitthatsuccessexists;thatachievementcountsforagreatdeal;andthatthetruemythisthattheactionsofmenandwomenareuseless.Tobelieveotherwiseistotakeonapointofviewthatislikelytobederanging.Itis,initsimplications,toremoveallmotivesforcompetence,interestinattainment,andregardforposterity.
Wedonotchoosetobeborn.Wedonotchooseourparents.Wedonotchooseourhistoricalepoch,thecountryofourbirth,ortheimmediatecircumstancesofourupbringing.Wedonot,mostofus,choosetodie;nordowechoosethetimeorconditionsofourdeath.Butwithinallthisrealmofchoicelessness,wedochoosehowweshalllive:courageouslyorincowardice,honorablyordishonorably,withpurposeorindrift.Wedecidewhatisimportantandwhatistrivialinlife.Wedecidethatwhatmakesussignificantiseitherwhatwedoorwhatwerefusetodo.Butnomatterhowindifferenttheuniversemaybetoourchoicesanddecisions,thesechoicesanddecisionsareourstomake.Wedecide.Wechoose.Andaswedecideandchoose,soareourlivesformed.Intheend,formingourowndestinyiswhatambitionisabout.

OutsidetheBible,thesesixwordsarethemostfamousinalltheliteratureoftheworld.TheywerespokenbyHamletwhenhewasthinkingaloud,andtheyarethemostfamouswordsinShakespearebecauseHamletwasspeakingnotonlyforhimselfbutalsoforeverythinkingmanandwoman.Tobeornottobe,toliveornottolive,toliverichlyandabundantlyandeagerly,ortolivedullyandmeanlyandscarcely.Aphilosopheroncewantedtoknowwhetherhewasaliveornot,whichisagoodquestionforeveryonetoputtohimselfoccasionally.Heanswereditbysaying:"Ithink,therefoream."
Butthebestdefinitionofexistenceeversawdidanotherphilosopherwhosaid:"Tobeistobeinrelations."Ifthistrue,thenthemorerelationsalivingthinghas,themoreitisalive.Toliveabundantlymeanssimplytoincreasetherangeandintensityofourrelations.Unfortunatelywearesoconstitutedthatwegettoloveourroutine.Butapartfromourregularoccupationhowmucharewealive?Ifyouareinterest-edonlyinyourregularoccupation,youarealiveonlytothatextent.Sofarasotherthingsareconcerned--poetryandprose,music,pictures,sports,unselfishfriendships,politics,internationalaffairs--youaredead.
Contrariwise,itistruethateverytimeyouacquireanewinterest--evenmore,anewaccomplishment--youincreaseyourpoweroflife.Noonewhoisdeeplyinterestedinalargevarietyofsubjectscanremainunhappy;therealpessimististhepersonwhohaslostinterest.
Baconsaidthatamandiesasoftenashelosesafriend.Butwegainnewlifebycontacts,newfriends.Whatissupremelytrueoflivingobjectsisonlylesstrueofideas,whicharealsoalive.Whereyourthoughtsare,therewillyourlivebealso.Ifyourthoughtsareconfinedonlytoyourbusiness,onlytoyourphysicalwelfare,onlytothenarrowcircleofthetowninwhichyoulive,thenyouliveinanarrowcir-conscribedlife.ButifyouareinterestedinwhatisgoingoninChina,thenyouarelivinginChina~ifyou‟reinterestedinthecharactersofagoodnovel,thenyouarelivingwiththosehighlyinterestingpeople,ifyoulistenintentlytofinemusic,youareawayfromyourimmediatesurroundingsandlivinginaworldofpassionandimagination.
Tobeornottobe--toliveintenselyandrichly,merelytoexist,thatdependsonourselves.Letwidenandintensifyourrelations.Whilewelive,letlive!

Inthelonghistoryoftheworld,onlyafewgenerationshavebeengrantedtheroleofdefendingfreedominitshourofmaximumdanger.Idonotshrinkfromthisresponsibility.Iwelcomeit.Idonotbelievethatanyofuswouldexchangeplaceswithanyotherpeopleoranyothergeneration.Theenergy,thefaith,thedevotionwhichwebringtothisendeavorwilllightourcountryandallwhoserveit.Andtheglowfromthatfirecantrulylighttheworld.
Andso,myfellowAmericans,asknotwhatyourcountrycandoforyou,askwhatyoucandoforyourcountry.
Myfellowcitizensoftheworld,asknotwhatAmericawilldoforyou,butwhattogetherwecandoforthefreedomofman.Finally,whetheryouarecitizensofAmericaorcitizensoftheworld,askofusherethesamehighstandardsofstrengthandsacrificewhichweaskofyou.Withagoodconscienceouronlysurereward,withhistorythefinaljudgeofourdeeds,letusgoforthtoleadthelandwelove,askingHisblessingandHishelp,butknowingthathereonearth,God‟sworkmusttrulybeourown.
