Medicifamily.Lorenzode'Mediciwasprobablythegreatestpatronofthecity.HetransformedFlorenceintothecradleoftheRenaissancebyattractingexcellentcontemporaryartists,architectsandwriterssuchasLeonardodaVinci,MichelangeloandBotticellitowhomhecommissionedvariousworks.
In1569FlorencebecamethecapitalcityoftheGrandDuchyofTuscanyandCosimoIde'MediciwasnamedtheGrandDukeofTuscanybyPopePiusV.ThemembersoftheMedicidynastypasseddownthetitleforthenexttwocenturiesupuntil
1737whenGianGastone,thelastsurvivingmaleheiroftheMediciclan,diedandtheLorrainefamilytookover.The
Lorrainefamilyruledthecityandregionwithgreatforesightandwisdomuntil1860,whenTuscanybecamepartoftheKingdomofItaly.FlorencewasthetemporarycapitalofItalyforfiveyearsfrom1865to1871.Duringthoseyearsthecitywas
modernizedfollowingcontemporarystandards.ThehistoricalcenterhadremainedlargelyunchangedthroughthecenturiesandlargepartsofthismedievalcitywasdestroyedincludingtheoldmarketandtheJewishghettowhichwerereplacedbyanewdistrictwithlargerstreetsandthebigsquareofPiazzadellaRepubblica.
DuringtheSecondWorldWar,FlorenceexperiencedayearlongoccupationbytheGermansandwasheavilydamaged
bybombs.Curiously,astheGermanretreatedfromFlorence,allofthebridgeswereblownupexceptPonteVecchio,many
claimingitwasconsideredtoobeautifultodestroyandsparedbyordersfromHitlerhimself.
