Mid-afternoon on a particularly busy Tuesday, I took leave of my desk at work and walked into a local Starbucks only to find a space where neither my clients nor my children would ask me to do something.

Inside, I ran into Kate, a co-worker of mine. The topic of parenthood came up. I complained about how packed my schedule was. From the minute I woke up to the minute I fell asleep, I was constantly in demand and always had someone knocking at the door. But a bit of sadness seemed to come over Kate’s face.

“Well, my daughter’s in San Francisco and she doesn’t seem to need me at all these days,” Kate said. It was in that moment that I realized although I might often feel in high demand, there will come a day when I will actually miss that same stress I then complained about.

And as our conversation continued, it turned to our children’s younger years, with Kate smiling proudly, thinking of the little boy and girl she raised who are now a man and a woman. But I noticed her smile was marked with regret. She explained that she often wondered about what she could have done differently when her children were in their earlier years.

This got me thinking. Is regret an unfortunate footnote (注脚) to parenthood? With that in mind, I asked six older parents one question: What is your biggest regret from your early days as a parent?

It turned out that all of them thought they could have done it better. But, each of them also has a strong, healthy relationship with their kids. Whatever regrets their parents might have had about their upbringing, one thing is clear ------- it didn’t affect them in a meaningful way.

The bottom line is, we all feel like we could be doing this parenting thing better. And quite clearly, years later, we’re still going to look back and wish we tried things differently. But the past can’t be changed, and neither should it.

For decades，research has shown that children's book not only provide great pleasure to readers ，but they can also play an important role in children’s academic（学业上的）and social success．In 1974，researchers reported that sixth﹣grade children who had been read to form an early age developed into better readers and valued reading more than did sixth graders who had not been to ，and they expected to continue reading throughout their lives．Others have determined that the more time children spend reading literature（文学作品），the better their reading and writing abilities become．Significant increases have been found in young children's comprehension and vocabulary skills，their understanding of sentence structure and story structure as a result of their being read to form an early age ，either at home or in school． Children who have access to literature and stories in their homes have been found to learn to read more quickly，and have better attitudes toward reading．Teachers who provide time for continuous silent reading ，who share books and discuss book authors with children during the school day ，positively those children's reading outside school．And the National Assessment of Educational Progress that children who frequently read for enjoyment out of school are better readers．

Because children's literature is so valuable to children，it should also be valuable to their teacher．And so it's unfortunate that something that can play such an important role in children's lives is often moved into a less than important role teacher education．

Traveling abroad for leisure is becoming more and more popular for Chinese. The UK is high up in the list of places that the Chinese want to visit. There is a sense of mystery about the UK: it’s often the images of England’s green parks, countryside and Victorian houses that people point to as an alternative to polluted, overcrowded cities such as Beijing and Guangzhou.

The capital is viewed as modern and dynamic, while being filled deep with history. When asked what other images are thought of by the UK, the reply is often “the Queen, tea and Oxbridge”. So what’s stopping them actually coming? Sebastian Wood, the British ambassador in Beijing, has described the UK as a “fortress”, and while this is perhaps an exaggeration (夸张), Britain does have a reputation as a country that is harder to access.

The main problem for Chinese tourists is obvious. Although visa applications are now completed online, visitors are still required to visit one of 12 UK centers across the country for a face-to-face interview and fingerprinting. If you don’t live near one of these centers already, you’d have to travel some distance to get there.

Another problem is also to be mentioned. If travelers from China visit the UK, they also want to cover as much ground as possible. But the UK is not included in the Schengen visa, which allows access to a host of 26 European countries such as France and Germany. So it makes the former seem less worth it.

There is also the issue of cost:￡47 for a Schengen visa, ￡82 for the UK. On top of this, the UK is viewed as stricter in its handling of visas compared with the rest of Europe, fed by urban legends of rejected applications.
