Recommendation from Headmasters

Instantly Peking University announced to admit students recommended by their headmasters, and the initial step aroused raging controversy. Some people strongly object to it while others heartily approve of it.

There are various reasons for the objection. First and foremost, recommendation from headmasters will intensify the imbalance of educational opportunities, as there are more headmasters entitled to recommend students in big cites than in rural areas. Whats more, the headmasters cant fully understand the recommended students. On the other hand, the supporters believe that the measure will play an essential role in reforming the existing admission system which only counts on the scores in the National College Entrance Examination. It will enable the students with special talents to receive higher education.

From my perspective, it is a profitable try on National College Entrance Examination reform, if the headmasters are free from abnormal factors when making the decisions.

Diploma or Ability?

Nowadays, people with high school diploma are massively popular when hunting for jobs, which is apparently the reason for the fever of diploma. The belief that diploma is equivalent to ability has provoked controversy.

Some people assert that the possession of high school diploma demonstrates the exceptional ability. It is reasonable due to the fact that many years education equips people with considerable knowledge and skills. Others, however, argue that knowledge is not equal to the ability which can only be acquired in practice. In other words, diploma can not guarantee that the holder is capable of applying knowledge into practice.

To my mind, we are bound to objectively judge a person according to his performance rather than blindly worship his diploma, even though it is a significant indicator sometimes.

My Opinion on Fever of Bizarre Pets

Nowadays, plenty of new exotic or bizarre pets around are gaining great popularity, varying from small-sized insects to big crocodiles.

For some people, strange as they are, exotics do show a lot of human traits---they can be warm, mischievous and affectionate at times. Thus, they can enrich peoples lives or make a good companionship. Others, however, do not show approval of keeping bizarre pets. Their reasons are as follows: First, some bizarre pets like snakes and crocodiles are dangerous. Skunks may carry rabies. Other animals even attack the owners or strangers. Second, unusual pets are more expensive compared with common ones. In addition, the owners must pay more energy and time in caring them.

In my opinion, an exotic or unusual pet is a small part of untamed nature. It is understandable that they greatly catch peoples interest, but on the other hand, people should have a second thought before they keep them as pets.

Civil Servant Craze

Some people think working as a civil servant is the best way to maintain a stable life. And this belief motivates millions of people to take civil servant examination. Deep in my heart, I also have been asking myself the same question again and again: why do I have little interest in civil servant examination? The reasons, in my mind, can be summed up in three aspects.

First of all, it is a waste of time and money for both the nation and the candidates to arrange or prepare for the civil servant examination. In the second place, the unbelievably high ratio of the applicants to the posts may lead to the government corruption. Last but not least, it is unreasonable for people to plunge into taking the examination without reflecting on their own strengths and weaknesses.

Such an attitude, I firmly believe, will help me embark on the right track of both job-hunting and my future life. To sum up, it is not advisable for the job-seekers to take civil servant examination blindly. In addition, the society and government should offer more job opportunities so that people have a wider range of job choices.

On Lottery Games

There is no denying the fact that lottery games have become a hotly debated topic in China. Opinions on this issue differ from person to person. Some people believe that lottery games are beneficial in many ways. For one thing, they help collect money for the poor, the disabled and the cause of sports. For another, lottery games provide people with a means of entertainment or pastime.

Many others, however, hold the opposite view. They claim that lottery games are, in fact, a kind of gambling. People are tempted to earn money through their luck instead of down-to-earth labor. They also aruge that the ticket buyers attach more importance to the prizes than to the support of the disabled or the cause of sports.

As far as I am concerned,// Weighing the arguments of both sides, I believe that it is OK to buy lottery tickets. Anyway, it has been existence for many years and proved to be more beneficial than harmful. Actually, we dont have to worry too much because facts have shown that most people can treat lottery games with a peaceful and normal mind.

(Personally, I think that both sides have something right. Actually, lottery games should be viewed as a two-edged sword, which presents us with both benefits and troubles. But we should not give up eating for fear of choking. The best policy, as I see it, is to maximize their advantages and minimize their unhealthy influence, so that they can benefit us in a better way.)

Information Security

The human beings are stepping into the information society. The information industry develops very rapidly, so do the hackers, trick-playing teens, exploring children, fraudsters, and serious white-collar criminals. Thus, information security becomes an impending important issue.

In case of information breach, the victims-----government department, an organization or an institution, or a company will inevitably suffer great or small loss. Government may be threatened with national security. Companies may lose opportunities to develop new projects. And the publics and users confidence will be damaged.

Then how to deal with this issue? Technology is only a partial solution to information security. Whats more important is that organizations and companies should promote the awareness on information security to its staff. However, since no system can ever be 100 percent secure, a prevention-only approach to information security management is not enough. Companies and organizations should adopt a dual approach to information security management by combing prevention and detection techniques.
