It was old and looked as if it might break away from the wall, but I managed to quickly climb onto the roof. Above me, the child paid me little attention and didn’t appear to be frightened at all. He was no older than two. I realized I’d be unable to predict his responses. My only choice now was to keep climbing. The roof narrowed as it rose and I planted myself as firmly as I could on the edge, caught the boy and helped him on to my lap.

Once upon a time in my family, the Saturday after Thanksgiving was the start of our annual big tamalemaking (制作玉米粽子) party. We made them to share with friends and neighbors.
Preparation began with Daddy and the cleaning of the corn husks (外壳). First he boiled them and left them in the water overnight. No husk passed inspection without being soft enough for folding. The next day, the rest of us got to work. My brothers and uncles were on hand for cleanup duty. And there was much to clean up as we women prepared the dough (生面团) made of corn. We also prepared the meat for the filling. The dough had to be spread evenly across the husk, and each tamale folded carefully so it would not split open during steaming.
According to the longstanding tradition — at least in my family — no one was allowed to leave the kitchen during the steaming. This could ruin the process. After all, no one wanted a bad tamale!
I thought the family tamalemaking party would go on forever, but to continue a family tradition, you needed to have family. Mine had changed forever. My father, two of my brothers and my uncle died in a short span of time. Mom and I spent months in a state of sad loss. At Christmas friends asked, “Are we going to get tamales this year？” Passing tamales out to friends was one of the great joys of the season, after all. But we couldn’t face it. Eventually, as the years went by, people stopped asking.
One afternoon, just before Thanksgiving, my mother and I pushed an empty shopping cart through the supermarket. I rounded the corner into the next room and found her standing in front of a counter: packages of dough bags of corn husks, dried spices — all the materials for a perfect tamale. “It’s time，” Mom said. I knew she was right. We set aside a Saturday to spend in the kitchen, just the two of us, alone with our thoughts.

If you were anything like me, most of them would have been spent outside: running, climbing, swimming, and playing.
The doing words of today’s children are somewhat different. There’s gaming, and sitting, and eating. Indeed, a report has found that children’s lazy summer holidays are responsible for wiping out children’s fitness levels. The study of 400 children in 14 schools found that fitness levels improved over the course of the academic year, only to be undone (打破) by the long summer holidays. In terms of physical activity, the minimum for children should be 60 minutes a day. This report indicates that children are failing to achieve even that.
Much of this can be blamed on the technology that was simply unavailable before now. As a society, we are good at wasting time; we are now spending 25 hours a week on the Internet, and most of that will be indoors. Many children seem to have their time strictly planned — school, afterschool activities, homework, bed — so relaxing in front of a screen must seem like a wonderful idea in comparison.
As a matter of fact, many of us have forgotten how to exist in the moment. There is no one more mindful than a child on their summer holidays. In the moment, all that matters is the rock pool you’re in, the sand between your toes, and the echoing bounce (回声反弹) of the ball. Are you ever more connected with your senses than when you are in nature? Even if that nature is a patch of grass at the end of your street, in your imagination it can become a jungle.
