She might have felt my 27 for she occasionally looked in my direction.

By now I was telling myself that I could at least tell her how good she sounded. I walked 28 and put some money in her box and she expressed her thanks with a smile on her face.

I asked her 29 , Why are you playing the piano in the middle of this crowded place?

She explained to me that she sees so many 30 people in the world that she is trying to relieve the pain by 31 motivational music.

Instead of continuing my way home, I said to her, I have been going through a 32 time lately, but you’ve made me 33 again.[

It was August 10, 2018. Diana Nyad was dozens of miles into her dream to complete a 118-mile swim from Cuba to Key West. Because of the currents in the Florida Straits, Nyad would have to last 60 hours --- if everything went perfectly.

For two years, this dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida had been part of her every waking hour. She was about to turn 60. "I wanted to be filled with commitment to the best of myself so that I wasn't looking back later saying, 'What have I done with my life?''' says Nyad.

Those extreme physical struggles are not new to her. In 1974, 25-year-old Nyad became the first person to swim across Lake Ontario against the current. A year later, Nyad's 28-mile swim around the island of Manhattan made the front page of the New York Times.

"Physically, I'm stronger. I weigh a lot more," Nyad said after a training swim in Key West in June. "There are also mental advantages to being older," says Steven Munatones, an expert in swimming.

Feeling a sharp pain in her right shoulder, she changed the angle of stroke (), telling herself to go gently until her hand caught the water. In the 17th hour, she swam over to the boat, and the crew located a pain reliever. Nyad took it. She lay on her back, rolled onto her belly and continued swimming, and then she'd turn on her back again, gasping, unable to fill her lungs. "I'm trying to make it. I'm barely going forward. I feel so sick. This has been my dream forever, but I can hardly make it another hour," Nyad told David Marchant, the boat's navigator (领航员). Between the 23rd and 27th hours, Nyad had gone just five miles. "OK, Diana, I'm going to touch you, and it's going to be over," Stoll said. Nyad agreed. And with that, 29 hours and 43 minutes after she'd leaped into the water, the swim came to an end.

"She just wouldn't quit. It was more amazing to see her not make it the way she fought than if everything had gone exactly right and she'd made it the whole way," says Mark Sollinger, who piloted Nyad's lead boat.

At a press .conference in Key West after being pulled onto the support boat, Nyad choked back tears and said, "Sometimes the will is so strong. But I was shaking and freezing, and I thought, 'There's no mind over matter anymore.' I think I'm going to have to go to my grave without swimming from Cuba to Florida."

But when Nyad returned home to Los Angeles, the pain began to fade. "Something says to me the goal is still there," says Nyad.

D. began the swim from Cuba to Florida when she was about 60 years old

Driving speeds have largely stabilized, and nowadays, safety concerns are important and reducing road accidents to minimum is a must. So, automakers are focused on safety systems more than ever before.

Given the emphasis on improving safety, it’s possible that well-known phrases such as live fast and die young may lose their meaning as innovative (创新的) new devices are built into cars and trucks and other things that go.

Many of the new safety systems that are being added to high-end vehicles are computer- assisted technologies that transfer some of the vehicle’s operations to the vehicle itself, rather than relying only on the driver’s decision-making skills.

For example, predictive brake assist is an in-vehicle feature that prepares the vehicle for braking when its built-in sensors detect a potential object ahead. The predictive brake assist basically places the vehicle’s braking system on alert, which helps the system to slow down the car in as little time and as short a distance as possible.

Other in-vehicle sensors will detect moving and still objects and will even distinguish the objects based on simple patterns, such as other vehicles vs. a person.

What’s more, built-in active systems, i.e., predictive precollision (可预测碰撞) systems, will provide drivers with advance detection of potential contact between vehicles. These systems compute the relative movement of the objects and detect possible dangerous intersections (交点).

What technological developments have enabled innovations like predictive precollision systems? Essentially, these so-called active systems are the result of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications.

These communication links allow highways to provide a vehicle’s owners with services such as renting a movie during the trip, as well as reduce reaction delays when medical care is needed due to a crash.

Despite these new technologies, drivers cannot take safety for granted.

Until all vehicles are fully automated, it is the drivers themselves who are responsible for operating their vehicles and obeying traffic laws designed to keep roadways secure. So, keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the steering wheel (方向盘).

48. Predictive Precollision can be used to _________.

A. detect possible dangerous crossroads

B. compute the relative movement of the contacting vehicles

C. brake the car automatically in as little time as possible

D. detect potential contacts between vehicles in advance

49. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Advanced safety systems make driving an easier job.

B. Automakers pay more attention to safety system than before.

C. New advanced technology makes the vehicle operation rely only on the vehicle itself.

D. Drivers are still expected to drive carefully despite the built-in advanced safety system.

50. We can conclude that the new technology will _________.

A. put an end to road accidents B. force people to obey traffic laws

C. see a wide use in the future D. ensure the quality of medical care

51. Which of the following would best serve as the title for the passage?

A. Live fast, die young B. New systems, safer driving

C. New technology, relaxed drivers D. High-end vehicles, big innovation

D

The silent young woman in bed number six is called Jasmine. So am I, but names are only superficial things, floats on the surface of the water, and we share deeper connections than that. That is why she fascinates me—why I spend my off-duty time sitting beside her.

Today is difficult. The ward (病房) is full of patients and I am kept busy emptying bed-pans, filling out forms, changing dressings. Finally, late in the afternoon, I get a few moments to make coffee, to take it over to the orange plastic chair beside her bed. I am thankful to be off my feet, glad to be in her company once again.

Hello, Jasmine, I say, as if greeting myself.

She does not reply. Jasmine never replies. She is down too deep.

She has been sea-damaged. I too am the daughter of a fisherman, so I choose my words like fish-hooks, cast them into her ears, imagine them sinking down through cold, dark water. Down to wherever she may be.

I have little time today, I tell her, touching her hair.

With Jasmine, it is always difficult not to touch. She is that rare thing, a truly beautiful woman. Because of this, people invent reasons to walk by. I catch them looking, drinking her in, feeding on her. They are barracuda (梭鱼), all of them.

Great beauty is something Jasmine and I do not share. I am glad of it.

Your father may be here soon, I say. Last week he said he would come.

Jasmine says nothing. Her left eyelid flickers, perhaps.

It is two months since the incident on her father’s fishing boat, since she fell overboard, sank, became entangled in the nets. It was some time before anyone noticed, then there was panic. Her father hauled her back on board and sailed for home. When he finally arrived, he carried ashore what he thought was his daughter’s body.

Jasmine, I whisper. I want her to take our baited (用作诱醒的) name. I want her to swallow it.

Fortunately, there was a doctor in the village that morning, a young man visiting relatives. It was he who brought this drowned woman back from the brink, he who told me her story. She opened her eyes, he said, looked up at her father and spoke a single word—then sank again, this time into coma.

Barracuda. That is what Jasmine said.

When her father visits, he touches her hair, kisses her cheek, sits in the orange plastic chair at the side of her bed and holds her hand. Like my own father, he has the big, brown, life-roughened hands of a fisherman. He too smells of the sea, and pretends he is a good, simple man.

Jasmine. We share so much, we are almost one.

I remember early mornings, my hair touched to wake me, my father lifting me half-asleep from my bed, carrying me, dropping me into his boat. His voice rough in my ear, his hands rough on my skin. I never wanted to go, but I was just a child. He did as he wished.

I remember salt water, hot sun, my mother shrinking on the shore. I remember the rocking of the boat, the screams of the seagulls.

Jasmine, you have a life inside you. Can’t you hear it calling?

  Nothing.

The ward door bangs, and I see Jasmine’s father walking towards us, carrying flowers. He smiles at me. Even in death, my own child had my father’s smile, and Jasmine’s will have this man’s. I know it.

He stops by her bed and touches her hair. Something stirs deep inside me. I watch Jasmine’s eyelids, waiting for her to bite.

52. Why does the author show special sympathy for Jasmine?

A. They share the same name. B. Jasmine looks very fascinating.

C. They have much in common. D. Jasmine’s father is very pitiful.

53. From the passage we can learn that Jasmine’s father _________.

A. comes to see his daughter every day

B. is a good and Simple man in the author’s eyes

C. took his daughter out to the sea against her will

D. thought his daughter dead when back to the shore

54. What kind of situation is Jasmine in now?

A. She is unconscious. B. She is nearly dying.

C. She is completely deaf. D. She is in a bad mood.

55. We can learn from the story that __________.

A. the author enjoys her early life on the sea

B. Jasmine was pulled out of water without delay

C. the author spends her duty time attending Jasmine

D. it was a young doctor who happened to save Jasmine

E

Outside our hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a seemingly ancient woman waited beside the door with her hand outstretched. Every day I put my hand in hers as our eyes met. She  never failed to return my smile, my grasp, and my greeting.
On the last day of our visit, I found myself alone on a busy corner across the street from our

hotel. Bicycles and motorbikes rushed in front of me. As I hesitated on the sidewalk, I felt a  hand on my elbow and looked down to see the smile of my small beggar friend looking up at me. She nodded her head toward the street, indicating that she would take me across. Together, we moved slowly into the chaos.
Then we moved on toward the sidewalk, where she pulled my face down to hers, kissed me on both cheeks, and then left, still smiling and waving back to me.

Traveling in poorer nations, I have witnessed a variety of ways to deal with beggars. The most common response of tourists faced with the poverty-stricken is to ignore them and focus their eyes elsewhere. I have seen people push away an outstretched hand in angry annoyance. A few may drop a few coins into the hand in a hurry, hoping that other ragged pursuers won’t  immediately appear on the scene.

For many reasons, giving money is not the best response to an outstretched hand. Many world travelers have discovered that the greatest gift they can give is their time and respect.  Everyone needs recognition, to be seen as worthy of being known, to feel appreciated and  loved. And I believe that everyone is worthy and worth knowing.
56. The woman beggars helped the author go across the busy street because __________.
A. the author gave her material assistance      B. the author treated her kindly and friendly
C. the author would help her as a reward      D. the author was a foreigner
57. From the story, what position of the beggars in the author’s mind might be?
    A. equal                B. superior          C. lower            D. valuable
58. In common cases, people will do the following things to the beggars EXCEPT for ______.
    A. pretending to see nothing                B. handing out some money
    C. refusing them angrily                   D. greeting them normally
59. According to the author, the most important things beggars really need are _________.
    A. mercy and pity  B. money and food  C. smile and greeting  D. attention and respect
60. The purpose of the passage is to _________.
    A. show how poor the beggars are in Vietnam
    B. offer some advice on dealing with begging
    C. express what we should offer the beggars
    D. describe an experience with a beggar

61. Frank was just hosting an important conference when he received a call from one of his former classmates, asking him to participate in the organization of a class get-together. Frank was enthusiastic about the idea, but he can’t manage it at the very moment.

62. Joe has been busily engaged in his graduation thesis lately, which is due in two weeks’ time. Now his friends invite him to go on an adventure tour to the Grand Canyon next week. He likes the idea but can’t possibly afford the time.

63. Sophie has been working as a marketing manager in an accounting company for six years. Now she has been offered a better position to work in another company. She is thrilled but thinks it best to discuss with her family members first.

64. Michael is an expert in finance and investment. When one of his friends turns to him for advice on how to advertise their latest product, he wishes he knew as much about advertising as his colleagues in the advertising department.

65. Bauer is already in possession of several credit cards of different banks, yet one of his distant relatives tries to persuade him to apply for a newly-issued credit card, convincing him that it will bring him much convenience. He feels it unnecessary and hesitates about how to turn it down.

A

Now’s not a good time as I’m in the milled of something. How about our reconnecting at X time? It’s common to get sudden requests for help when you are in the middle of something. Something you get phone calls from friends or associates when you’re in a meeting or doing important work. This method is a great way to hold off the request temporarily. First, you let the person know it’s not a good time as you are doing something. Secondly, you make known your desire to help by suggesting another time at your convenience. This way, the person doesn’t feel blown off.

B

This doesn’t meet my needs now but I’ll be sure to keep you in mind. If someone is recommending a deal/opportunity which isn’t what you are looking for, let him/her know straight-out that it doesn’t meet your needs. Otherwise, the discussion can drag on longer than it should. It helps as the person knows it’s nothing wrong about what he’/she is offering, but that you are looking for something else. At the same time, by saying you’ll keep him/her in mind, it signals you are open to future opportunities.

C

I’d love to do this, but…”You can use this as it’s a gentle way of breaking no to the other party. It’s encouraging as it lets the person know you like the idea (of course, only say this if you do like it) and there’s nothing wrong about it. I often get suggestions from fellow loggers and business associates which I can’t participate in and use this method to gently say no. Their ideas are absolutely great, but I can’t take part due to other reasons such as more important affairs or different needs.

D

I’m not the best person to help on this. Why don’t you try X? If you are being asked for help in something which you contribute much to or don’t have resources to help, let it be known they are looking at the wrong person. If possible, refer them to a lead they can follow-up on-whether it’s someone you know, someone who might know someone else, or even a department. I always make it a point to offer an alternate contact so the person doesn’t end up in despair. This way you help direct the person in the right place.

E

Let me think about it first and I’ll get back to you. This is more like a Maybe than a straight out. No. If you are interested but you don’t want to say ‘yes’ just yet, use this. Sometimes I’m offered a great idea which meets my needs, but I want to hold off on committing as I want some time to think first. There are times when new considerations pop up and I want to be certain of the decision before committing myself. If the person is sincere about the request, he/she will be more than happy to wait short while. Specify a date/time-range(say, in 1-2 weeks) where the person can expect a reply.

F

No, I can’t is the simplest and most direct way to say no. As social beings, we should develop the sense of cooperation, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to give up our own principles of life. In fact, the ability to distinguish between right and wrong and the courage to say No to unreasonable requests or advice is a sign of maturity. Once you do that you’ll find how easy it actually is. You’ll get more time for yourself, your work and things that are most important for you.
