1862–TheHartleyInstitutionisformed.InitsfirstyearstheHartley
Institutionhadjust700dayandeveningstudentsenrolled–justafractionofthemorethan20,000fulltimestudentswehaveattheUniversitytoday.1896–WechangeournametoHartleyCollege–signifyingashiftfromthepart-timeteachingofadulteveningclasses,tothefulltimeteachingofstudents.
1902–Weadopttheworduniversityinournameforthefirsttime,becomingHartleyUniversityCollege.Highfieldcampusopening,1919
1919–ThenewHighfieldcampusisfinallyopened,providingmuchneededspacefortherisingstudentpopulationandanumberofnewfaculties.Thecampus
hadoriginallyopenedforafewweeksin1914beforetheoutbreakoftheFirstWorldWar,beforebeingofferedforuseasaWarHospitalforthedurationofWW1.Atthistimethecampusconsistedofoneartsbuilding,28sharedlecturerooms,andablockoflaboratoriesforbiology,chemistry,physicsand
engineering.Wenowhavemorethan70buildingsoversixdifferentcampuses,and
anumberofworld-classspecialistresearchcentresforoceanography,engineering,optoelectronicsandmedicineamongothers.
1931–TheChemistryandEngineeringdepartmentsgainanational
reputation,winningacoveted￡10,000granttoexpandtheirfacilities.Partofthisgrantmoneyisusedtobuildourfirsteverwindtunnel.Primarilyusedforaeronauticalresearch,ourwindtunnelhasgoneontoplayamajorroleinensuringOlympicsTeamGBcyclingsuccessamongmanyotherprestigiousprojects.
