13Here are two amazing shops from the world.

One of the most famous department stores in New York City is Macy's.There are over 850 Macy's stores all over the US, but the flagship store is in Herald Square,Manhattan---just around the corner from the Empire State Building. Interestingly, Rowland Macy, the company founder ( 创始人 ), opened his first shops between 1843 and 1855, but they weren't successful. However, Macy learned from his mistakes, and in 1858 he moved to New York. He opened his first New York store on October 18, 1858 and was immediately successful. Macy's is especially famous for its Thanksgiving Day Parade, which marks the beginning of the Christmas season.

One of the oldest shops in London is Fortnum & Mason.

It was founded by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason in

1707 in central London. Originally, the shop only sold food, but these days, it sells all kinds of other things including clothes, books and games. It has the "Gentleman's Department" on the top floor, a famous tea shop and several restaurants. The business started out small, but in 1761, William Fortnum’s grandson, Charles, went to work for Queen Charlotte. As a result, the royals ( 皇家 ) started shopping there and continues to now. In fact, Queen Elizabeth visited Fortnum's last year. Fortnum's is really famous for its hampers, which are baskets of food. 17British newspapers are much smaller than they used to be and their readers are often in a hurry. So newspapermen write as few words as possible. They tell their readers what happened, where, when and how it happened and what was the result: what damage was done, which famous man married which woman, who did very well in the match and so on. Readers want the fact and they are also interested in the people who have seen the accident. So a newspaperman always likes to get some information from someone who was there, which can be given in the person’s own words. Because he can use only a few words, the newspaperman must choose those words carefully, every one must be effective. Instead of “he called out in a loud voice”, he writes “he shouted”; instead of “the loose stones rolled noisily down the side of the mountain”, he will write “they thundered down the mountainside”.

19How to Face Senior High School Entrance Examination

The Senior High School Entrance Examination is coming. Are you ready for it? Although we have dreams, we may feel worried from time to time.

Recently, because of the heavy schoolwork, many students are stressed. Moreover, more attention is paid to students’ language ability, so it is difficult for students to get high marks. As a result, some students are likely to lose heart.

As to the problems, my classmates offer the following suggestions. First, we should not only work hard but also improve our learning methods. Second, we should plan our time carefully so that we can achieve a balance between schoolwork and hobbies.

In my opinion, we should develop a healthy body by eating healthily and exercising more. Furthermore, we’d better share the worries with our teachers and friends.

“Text Neck is not just a texting problem,” said Dr. Dean Fishman. “Text Neck is a gaming problem. Text Neck is an e-mailing problem.”

Fishman made up the term “Text Neck” in 2008 while examining a 17-year-old patient. The teen came in complaining of neck pain. Fishman noticed that the teen was sitting in a chair, bending (弯曲) over her smartphone, texting away. “I knew I had something,” Fishman said.

A recent study published in Surgical Technology International’s 25th edition says texting may be hurting your back. The study found that bending your head to look at your mobile phone held in your hands can put up to 60 pounds of pressure (压力) on your neck. The average human head weighs 10 pounds in a right position – when your ears are over your shoulders. For every inch you bend your head forward, the pressure on your back doubles.

Staying in the “forward head posture” can lead to many problems. Over time, it can even change the natural curve (曲线) of your neck.

Dr. Michelle Collie, director of Performance Physical Therapy in Rhode Island, recently says Text Neck has increased very quickly, especially among her younger patients. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 8- to 18-year-olds spend almost seven and a half hours using mobile device or desktop computer for fun every day.

So what’s a smartphone-texting, laptop-loving guy to do?

First, Collie said, is to pay attention to your body. Keep your feet flat on the floor, roll your shoulders back and keep your ears directly over them so your head isn’t bent forward. And use something to support the weight of a mobile device.

Fishman’s Text Neck Institute created a mobile app to help you remember to avoid forward head posture. When your phone is held at a safe point, a green light shines. When you’re at risk for Text Neck, a red light appears.

Most important is taking breaks from time to time while using any mobile device or desktop computer. About every 20 minutes, stand up, roll your shoulders and neck or go for a short walk to have a break.

1What might Fishman mean by saying “I knew I had something”?

AHe had the same smartphone as the patient.

BHe got a new name for the patient’s pain.

CHe wanted to play a joke on the patient.

DHe had the same idea with the patient.

2According to the passage, your head is in the right position when ______.

Ayou bend over your neck often

Byour ears are over your shoulders

Cyou turn your neck to the other side

Dyou put up more pressure on your neck

3The last three paragraphs are mainly talking about ______.

14For too many people, the harm begins early in life. Four out of ten babies born in the United States do not form a strong relationship with either parent, and they will pay for that in the rest of their lives.

New research from Princeton University confirms what other researchers have already found: the number of babies who are lack of the close relationship is rather big, which prevents them having a fair chance of having a successful life.

That finding is supported by many other research projects, including a study from the University of Rochester showing that nearly one third of US parents don’t know what to expect from their newborns, or how to help them grow and learn and get along with others. Babies, as others have pointed out, don’t come with an owner’s guide book.

The basic problem, according to the Princeton’s study, is that 40 per cent of babies in the US live in fear or distrust of their parents, and that will turn into aggressiveness (侵犯), defiance (违抗) and hyperactivity (多动) as they grow into adults.

Of that number, 25 per cent don’t have a close relationship with their parents because the parents don’t satisfy their needs. And 15 per cent find their parents are so troubling that they will avoid them whenever possible.

That will not necessarily result in a lifetime of violence, but it will make living a successful life much more difficult.

“They can overcome(克服) it,” sociologist Sophie Moullin of Princeton, the leader of that study, said in a telephone interview. “It’s not a make-or-break situation, but they might find it harder to control their behaviour.”

Moullin, along with his teammates from Columbia University and the University of Bristol in England, studied more than 100 research projects, to reach their conclusions.

Many reasons lead to the problem, including poverty(贫穷), ignorance(无知), and stress among parents who are so busy with their own problems that a new child is sometimes more than they can deal with.

Yet strong relationships, the researchers say, are amazingly simple to achieve.

1According to the writing style of the passage, it may be a___________.

Anews report Bbook report Cnovel Dreview

2Which of the following is NOT true?

AAbout 40 % of the newborns do not form a strong relationship with either parent.

BSome parents are too busy with their own problems to deal with a new child.

CParents’ failing to satisfy their babies’ needs may cause future problems.

DBabies who fail to have close relationships with their parents are sure to have an unsuccessful life.

3What may be discussed in the following paragraph?

AFindings of other projects similar to this topic.

BExamples of the results of lacking strong relationships.

DReasons for failing in building up strong relationships with a baby.

Sometimes, you might not finish drinking your glass of water before you go to bed. You might want to drink it the next morning. But have you ever wondered if it is still safe to drink?

“If you have clean water in a clean glass, you’re fine to drink it for a day or two,” Kellogg Schwab from the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute in the US told Time.

But you may find that it tastes strange. That’s because after about 12 hours, the carbon dioxide in the air reacts with the water in your glass, slightly lowering its pH level.

Also, there might be more microorganisms in your water if you leave it out overnight. Microorganisms grow more quickly at room temperature. These microorganisms can stick to your glass. They can make you get sick more easily. But as long as you clean your glasses very often, this will not be a problem.

In countries like the US and UK, people often drink water directly from the tap . This is OK – however, tap water cannot be stored for a long time. Most experts say that tap water has a shelf life of six months, according to Zane Satterfield from West Virginia University, US. After six months, there is less chlorine in the water and bacteria start to grow. You’d better not drink the water otherwise you may get sick.

What about plastic water bottles? Schwab said people should be careful with them. If you leave a bottle of water under the sun or in a car for a long period of time, the plastic produces a chemical called BPAThis chemical can cause heart disease and cancer.

1According to the passage, the water in the glass tastes strange after about_______.

A12 hours B2 hours

Ca day and a night Dtwo days

2Why does the water taste strange after a night?

ABecause there is less chlorine in the water.

BBecause the glasses are dirty after a night.

CBecause the plastic produces a chemical called BPA

DBecause the carbon dioxide in the air reacts with the water , lowering its pH level.

3The underlined word “ microorganisms” in the fourth paragraph probable mean “________”

A.漂浮物 B.微生物 C.抗生素 D.废弃物

4Which of the following is not true?

AYou may get sick more easily after you drink the water overnight.

BIt’s not a right way to leave a bottle of water under the sun for a long time.

CMany people drink water directly from the tap because of no bacteria in the running water.

DKellogg Schwab advised us to drink clean water in a clean glass for a day or two.

All of us should keep a kitchen diary, and we can know that how much food we waste at home. The first thing for us to do is to stop throwing away food that we can still eat. We should eat everything we buy and if we cannot, we should buy less.

♦ Buy only what we need

We should ask for smaller portions (部分) in stores. We should also check how much food we have before buying more. We shouldn’t bring much food we don’t need home even if large posters ask us to do so.

♦ Develop the habit of packing food

Chinese consumers are generous (慷慨的) and friendly. In restaurants, often too much food is ordered and served. So when ordering out, we are supposed to exclude (排除) the food if we don’t plan to eat it. And order smaller servings in restaurants and take home what we cannot finish.

Don’t put it off! Let’s stop food waste today!

1Why is our nation being encouraged to stop wasting food?

19Shopping online is becoming a common activity in our daily life. Linda’s mom is a full-time housewife. These days, she is crazy about shopping on the Internet. So they held a family meeting. Here is the result.

Linda’s dad thinks that shopping online is a waste of time and money. Sometimes the clothes you bought don’t fit you well.Linda’s mom thinks online shopping has made our daily life more convenient and comfortable. For the same goods, you can compare their prices in different stores. You can always buy the cheapest one. Linda thinks shopping on the internet can save students a great deal of time on the way between home and store, they no more hang out with their friends; they can buy different kinds of products online.

In my opinion, shopping online has more advantages than disadvantages, there will be more people to shop on the Internet. It will be much more popular in the near future. So I think Linda’s mom should be allowed to shop online.

14Text messaging, or "texting", which allows people to send and receive messages on mobile phones, becomes very popular today.

The advantages of texting are obvious. Texting helps to save money. If you have a few words to greet your families and friends on their birthdays or on some important festivals, sending messages can be cheaper than phone calling. Texting helps to save time. Even if you want to send a message to 100 people, you can do it in one second. Texting helps you to "talk" to someone when he is too busy to answer the phone. Texting can also help you to "talk" to someone secretly if you don't want others to hear what you are talking on the phone. These advantages are so amazing that many people are crazy about it. They hold mobile phones in hands all day long, send dozens of messages each day, and even text while driving or walking. However, texting has its disadvantage. Junk messages may come into your mobile phone box now and then. When your phone box gets too full, you can't receive any more messages. You may therefore miss some important information.

What's more, if you don't do texting properly, for example, texting while driving or walking, it can be dangerous. It can cause____and even death. It was reported that about 6,000 people were killed and half a million were injured for this reason each year. In Fort Lee, a small town in New Jersey, USA, three people died because they walked into traffic while texting in 2013. Two researchers at Stony Brook University, New York found that texters are 60% more probably to have an accident than others. When people are texting, they don't notice other people or things around them. To reduce traffic accidents, all drivers of the UN are now not allowed to text while driving. About 32 countries have passed laws restricting(限制) the use of mobile phones while driving.

Texting is a wonderful way of communication. However, only when we use it properly, can we fully enjoy the fun it brings.

1How many advantages of texting are mentioned in the passage?

ATwo. BThree.

CFour. DFive

2What did the researchers at Stony Brook University find?

ATexters are easier to have an accident.

BTexting is a good way of communication.

C6,000 people were killed and injured.

DMany people text to greet families and friends.

3The underlined word "injuries" probably means_______.

A.事故 B.伤害

C.争执 D.死亡

4Which of the following statements is wrong according to the passage

ATexting while driving or walking is dangerous

BTo reduce traffic accidents, all drivers of the UN are now not allowed to text while driving.

CTexting have more advantages than disadvantages,so we can use it any time.

DIf you don’t want others to hear what you are talking on the phone, you can text.

5The passage is written to tell us that .

Awe should do less texting

16 It's a common belief that over time, pet owners start to look like their animals. Now comes the terrifying news that cats look up to their owners as role models and copy their behaviour.

Next time you reach for your fridge, think twice. If your cat is watching, she will probably overeat as well.

In a new study from the University of Messina, it turns out that indoor cats who live closely to their owners “mirror” the lives of their caregivers. They sleep at the same time, eat at the same time, and can even become more or less social depending on the behaviour of their owners.

“Cats are clever animals with a long memory,” Jane Brunt, director of the Catalyst Council, told Discovery News. “They watch and learn from us, noting the patterns of our actions, knowing where their food is kept and what time to expect to be fed, how to open the cupboard door that's been improperly closed, and where their feeding and toileting areas are.” Because cats copy our habits, if you spend a lot of time raiding(搜刮)the fridge, your cat will return to its food bowl for that midnight snack, too. According to the study, this explains why “human and cat overweight rates often seem to match”

There's no word if drinking green tea and making sure you go to yoga will benefit (使受益) your cat, but based on the study, it sounds like sticking to a healthy eating and sleeping habit is best for both of you.

There's a lot we can learn from our cats in return. “When they sit softly breathing , eyes halfclosed, the sense of peace and calm that comes over us is like a private less on in inner meditation(冥想)”Brunt said. They're probably pretty good at remaining calm.

So, according to science, though we think that cats are not close to us all these years, it turns out they are in fact learning from us and looking up to us. Scary, huh?

1According to the passage, which of the following is Wrong?

ACats can copy humans' behaviours.

BCats are smart and have a long memory.

CGreen tea and yoga can benefit cats.

DHumans can learn from cats in some way.

2What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

AHumans' keeping searching the fridge.

BHumans' drinking green tea and going to yoga

CCats' copying humans' habit of looking for food.

DCats' going to their owners for food.

3What can we learn from our cats?

ATo remain peaceful. BTo be able to copy.

CTo stay hungry. DTo look up to friends.

4The best title for the passage could be “________”

AYour cat can bring you pleasure BYou are copying your cat

CYou can make your cat social DYour cat is copying your habit

17Every 14 days, another language dies. There are many reasons for this. Some people think more common languages have more economic(经济的)power. Because of this, young people choose to learn a common language as they think it is more useful. Another reason is that some languages aren't written down. Guujaaw is a leader of the Haida Nation, whose people have lived on the Queen Charlotte Islands, Canada, for more than 10, 000 years. Their language is endangered. Traditionally, it wasn’t written down, and, as a result, some people are worried that it will die one day. Guujaaw replies to this, "We talk to each other, listen, visit, and believe in the spoken word. Expressing yourself without writing is natural." However, if Guujaaw's language and others like it are going to stay alive, writing may have to become part of their lives.

When a language dies, a lot of knowledge dies with it. To begin with, language is a huge part of the culture of the people who speak it. Language allows speakers to say certain things: words that describe a cultural idea may not translate exactly into another language. Furthermore, many endangered languages have rich spoken cultures, Stories, songs and histories are passed on from older people to younger generations(一代), Elizabeth Lindsey, an expert in languages, emphasizes(强调) this. “When an elder dies, a library is burned,” she says.

Also, language death affects our knowledge about nature. Local people often have a deep understanding of plants, animals, and the relationship between them. David Harrison, a researcher on endangered languages, reflects, “80% of plant and animal species(物种)have been undiscovered by science. But that doesn’t mean they're unknown to humans.”

Many languages are endangered. However, it s not too late. Children often grow up speaking two languages. "No one ..becomes richer by giving up… one language to learn another,” Harrison said. If children feel both languages are important, they will use both. So, it is necessary that children realize how useful their local language is.

1How many reasons are mentioned for endangered languages in Paragraph 1?

A2 B3. C4 D5.

2In Paragraph 2, the writer mainly tells us_____.

Ahow cultures are passed on Bhow cultures are discovered

Cwhy languages are written down Dwhy languages are important to cultures

3The underlined word "affects" in the passage means “_______”.

Awaits for Bdepends on

Cis different from Dhas an influence on

4Which of the following is the writer's opinion?

APeople need to use common languages more often.

BThe spoken word is more important than the written word.

CChildren are the hope to stop the local language from dying.

DMany animals and plants are in danger because of dying languages.

19Li Ming is a member of my team called Rainbow. Generally speaking, he is a warm-hearted and outgoing boy. He is always ready to help others without asking for anything in return. He can also get on well with teachers and classmates. In his spare time, he likes reading books on history, so he knows a lot of knowledge about history.

But as a famous saying goes “Every coin has two sides”, sometimes he doesn’t work hard enough on his lessons. I advise him to spend more time on the subjects from now on. What’s more, he’d better answer questions in class actively so that he can make great progress.

I’m sure if he can try harder to improve himself. He’ll be an excellent student soon.

13 The book I would like to talk about is The Merchant of Venice. The book is a dramatic work by Shakespear, an English famous writer in the 16th century. It talks about something happening between merchants in Venice. The main characters are Bassanio, Portia, Shylock and Antonio.

The drama begins with Antonio, who helps Bassanio borrow money from Shylock, and then brings out other stories. Bassanio is a poor merchant. He needs money to follow his dream to marry Portia—a very beautiful and rich lady. He first wants to borrow money from his friend Antonio, also a merchant in Venice. Antonio borrows the money from a Jewish rich merchant Shylock. Antonio does much harm to Shylock before because Antonio really hates Jewish. Shylock is a little mean and loves money very much. He always gets interest from the people who borrow money from him. Antonio promises he will pay the money back in three months, or Shylock will be allowed to cut out 1 pound of flesh out of Antonio’s body.

Bassanio successfully wins the love of Portia but soon realizes his friend can not pay the money back to Shylock on time. 14 Every minute, someone is setting up an Internet company somewhere, in the world. Each one is searching for the one great idea that could make his web company click in a big way. And they are trying all kinds of tricks to attract people towards their websites. While some websites offer sounds, cartoons and amazing photos on screen to make their sites almost a movie-like experience for the viewers, others provide free downloads and competition.

A company in California, US, has decided to offer online smells to people who visit its website. That is, if a pizza image comes on screen, your nose will catch the smell of bread and cheese! All you need to do is to connect a device (设备) called “iSmell” to your computer. This smart little device contains (包含) some chemicals that can create different kinds of smells.

The company has invented software that changes the chemical composition (成分) of different smells into digital signals (数字信号). An onscreen image, which is programmed with the proper digital signal, will start the “iSmell” device. The device will use the software to change the digital signal again and let go of the correct smell. This device reads the digital smell code (代码) from the website and creates the proper smell from its store of chemicals. This smell is then made to blow softly in the direction of the user with the support of a small fan.

In order to let go of the correct smell, the company has created a “Scent Registry”, which contains a digital index of thousands of smells. The company plans to allow website developers to integrate the proper smells in digital code to their games and images. The company is also hoping that Hollywood filmmakers will use the smell technology in their movies. Imagine audiences getting the smell of rocket fuel as a spacecraft takes off on the cinema screen! Of course, filmmakers will have to be careful not to shoot in dirty neighborhoods, which have a lot of rubbish lying around.

19Our school had a survey about delaying school starting time online. I agreed that students should go to school a little late. Here are my reasons.

First of all, delaying starting time at school makes sure that we can have enough sleep for a day. A good sleep will make us more active in class so that we study more efficiently. Secondly, it also offers us more time to have breakfast. Breakfast provides energy for the whole morning. No breakfast will do harm to our health and our study. What’s more, we don’t have to go to school in such a hurry, and we can also do some exercise to keep fit.

All in all, delaying school starting time does good to students, We are looking forward to it.

13Recently, China Dream has been the subject of a public topic. Although it is quite common for Chinese people to dream of a developed China, most people also have their own dreams. I interviewed several young Chinese students with higher US educational backgrounds. They all had their own dreams for their native country.

Fred Wang, an MBA student in the US, said, “I dream of equal chance for the young in China. Equality means all young people can compete fairly, based on the rule-of-law no matter whether they are rich or poor.”

Yujie Zhao, another MBA student in California, said, “I dream of having the best education for my children so they will not lose at the starting line, and I dream of being able to take good care of my parents after they return home from work.”

Yiqiong Zhang, an MBA graduate from the US, shared her dreams. “I have a dream which I have been holding for many years, that is after working hard for about 20 to 25 years, I can have enough money to build and manage a bookstore or a flower shop. Besides working hard, I am able to enjoy life, to play the piano, to hike and to enjoy a two-month-long vacation every year. This may be a common dream among young Chinese students.”

There is no doubt that all of these young students have their own China Dream. They all love chasing their dreams. The beautiful China Dream requires everyone’s hard work. Everyone should work hard to make their dreams come true.

14Love it or not, flying is necessary if we want to get to a faraway destination. Taking a flight in China can be a boring experience. This is because Chinese airlines didn’t allow smartphones to be powered on during flights. However, the launch of a new Chinese satellite Shijian 13 has changed the situation. Now, many Chinese airlines allow passengers to use their smartphones freely, that is, we can finally catch up on our favorite books and songs while at 30000 feet in the air.

The communication satellite Shijian 13 can transmit (输送) 20 gigabytes (GB千兆) of data per second and cover most parts of China’s land. This makes it the most powerful communication satellite China has ever developed. In fact, Shijian 13 has a higher message capacity (容量) than the total capacity of all China’s communication satellites launched.

The powerful satellite has greatly improved the Internet, including that on fast-moving transportation vehicles such as planes and high-speed trains.

With shijian 13, people are able to get a download speed of up to 150 MBps on their smartphones. According to Zhou Zhicheng, head of the communications satellite department of the China Academy of Space Technology, the speed means it takes less than one minute to download a 1-GB movie. Watching online TV on planes and high-speed trains has come true.

But the satellite’s benefits are far greater that that. China is trying to have 22 communication satellites in the sky by 2025. Shijian 13 will be able to cover wider areas, including mountains, oceans and deserts. When people have emergencies while hiking or sailing, the satellite can help them report and ask for help. It will also help people in natural disasters.

1What does the first paragraph tell us?

AShijian 13 has already enabled us to use smartphones while flying.

BChina Airlines allow passengers aboard to use their smartphones.

CShijian 13 is a kind of rocket which can carry us to a faraway place.

DShijian 13 can make us catch up with latest books and pop songs.

2What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?

AShijian 13 BThe Internet

CA high-speed train DThe powerful satellite

3Which sentence tells Shijian 13 is the most powerful communication satellite?

AWith it we can download a 1-GB movie within a second.

BWith it we can ask for help when we meet typhoons in sea.

CWith it we can do anything we like on high-speed trains.

DWith it we can prevent natural disasters from happening.

4What does the story mainly talk about?

AWhy China’s satellite technologies are so advanced.

BWhat the experience has been like on high-speed trains.

CHow China develops the new communication satellite.

DWhat changes Shijian 13 brings to China sooner or later.

15In the 1920s and 30s the airlines were just beginning. It was unusual for people to travel by air because it was expensive and dangerous. In those days, there were no flight attendants to look after the passengers. Young men, or "stewards" helped the passengers onto the airplane and carried the passengers' luggage (行李) but they did not provide food and drinks. But then in 1930, a woman called Ellen Church invented the "stewardess".

Ellen Church was born in 1904 on a farm in Iowa. She was a different child. She didn't want to work on a farm or marry a farmer—she wanted a more adventurous (冒险的) life. Ellen studied to be a nurse at the University of Minnesota and then got a job in a hospital. For the next few years she stayed at the hospital but also took flying lessons and got her pilot's license.

Ellen was twenty-five years old when she first got in touch with Boeing Air Transport. She loved flying but she understood that airlines were a man's world. Although women like Emelia Earheart were becoming famous, she realized it was impossible for a woman to have a career as a pilot. But she had another idea. Most people were frightened of flying because flying was still an unreliable (不可靠的) way to travel. There were often delays (延误), many crashes and the bad weathers made many passengers sick. Ellen thought nurses could take care of passengers during flights and BAT. Agreed.

The young woman from Iowa and seven other nurses became the first air stewardesses.

At first pilots were unhappy because they did not want stewardesses on airplanes, but passengers loved the stewardesses. In 1940 there were around 1000 of them working for different airlines. The early "stewardesses" had to be under twenty-five-year old, single and slim. When a woman joined an airline, she had to promise not to get married or have children. It was hard job and not well paid. They worked long hours and earned $1 an hour.

In the 1970s, stewardesses were unhappy in their job and airlines had to make some changes. Since the 1970s, "stewardesses" have been called flight attendants. They are well paid and work fewer hours than in the past.

1The last sentence of the first paragraph suggests that _________.

Athe word "stewardess" was made up by Ellen Church

BEllen Church was the first woman who flew a plane

CEllen Church was the first woman who worked on a plane

DEllen Church was the first woman passenger on a plane

2From the second paragraph, we learn that ________.

AEllen did not behave in the same way as most as other girls

BEllen's family was not rich enough to support her education

CEllen was fond of working as a nurse in the hospital

DEllen has an unhappy childhood that changed her completely

3The main reason for Boeing Air Transport offering Ellen the job was ________.

Aher flying experience Bher university education

Cher nursing experience Dher life attitudes

4According to the passage, in the 1940s a woman had to ________ if she wanted to be a stewardess.

Abe a nurse Bbe married

Cbe a mother Dbe young

5The passage mainly talks about _______.

Athe background of early flying pilots

Bthe experience of flying passengers

Cthe history of early flight attendants

Dthe development of airplanes

16 In an Italian school, the students are taking a science lesson.

Mr Marco, their teacher, explains, “For part of our lesson today, some of you are going to visit the Lakeside Park to study trees in natural surroundings. You will be looking carefully and thinking about the conditions trees need to grow.”

Mr Marco and the group walk to the woodland where there are many beautiful trees. The students are required to match the trees with the names of three trees on their question paper. Two students try guessing the height of young trees. Then they measure the distance from a young tree to the parent tree by counting their steps between the trees. One of the students reminds them to stay on task and follow the group. The rest of the group see several trees matching the descriptions on their task list and run towards them.

Mr Marco gives the students three large plastic bowls with three labels (标签). The students begin to search under each tree and find things to fill the labelled bowls. They put the things they find into a bowl labelled red birch. Then they find the other two trees, a Tibetan cherry, and a paperbark maple with red and orange curly leaves. Once the students have finished, they relax, draw and make notes.

When the group return to school, Mr Marco gives them special glasses to look through. They begin to sort and order their collections. Two of the students put tiny seeds between two pieces of glass.

They examine them carefully. Two more students pour water into a metal container (容器) to cover some leaves and dead flowers. They put on special gloves to stir the liquid (液体) as the container heats up on a hotplate. Two other students are drawing and taking notes.

Then Mr Marco calls the group together. The group tell the class about the things they saw and the results of their experiments (实验). Mr Marco thanks the group and says he hopes to see the results of their experiments growing in the school garden.

My favorite book is Don’t Die, My Love by Lurlene McDaniel. I love all her books, but this was the first one I read and I have to say, it is by far my favorite. It doesn’t end like other books, and I cried while reading.

I highly recommend Skinny Bones by Barbara Park. It is funny, so please add it on your book list. You don’t want to miss out funny stories

I would suggest______ by Judy Blume. It is based on real things that happened to Judy Blume. It is about a girl, Alice, who meets some girls at a new state(情景). They become friends, make a club and meet once a week. They stop after two weeks because they all like a boy in their class and put him as number one. I think every girl should read this because it is about our growing up.

I read a book called Neela Victory Song and it was so good I read it twice! It takes place in India in 1936 and this 12-year-old girl named Neela tries to save her father! It has lots of history in it! I also learned a lot about different cultures! The author’s name is Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.

Warm weather and sunny days mean it’s a barbecue( 烧烤 ) season in the US.These days, 1 people say they’re going to a barbecue, they usually 2 that they’re going to cook the food over a grill( 烤架 )out doors.Popular barbecue foods include hamburgers, hot dogs, and vegetables.

Barbecue fans say that this is not real barbecue;it’s just grilling.True barbecue, which is also 3 BBQ,is an American tradition (传统)that is as old as the country itself.

Barbecue refers to meat that is cooked for a very long time(sometimes as long as 24 hours) over low heat from a wood fire. The smell of the burning wood adds flavor (味道) 4 the meat, which becomes soft as it cooks.

Different parts of the US have different 5 of making barbecue. In Texas, people often use beef. In North and South Carolina, pork is the most common. In Kansas City, pork ribs ( 猪肋排 ) are the favorite. Each region( 地区 ) says that its own barbecue is the 6. There are barbecue competitions every year, and even magazines about the art of making great barbecue.

Most Americans don’t have the time or patience to dig a hole, fill it with special wood, light a fire and 7 cook meat carefully over it all day and night. So when they want a real barbecue, they go to restaurants that do the hard work for them. For those who want to have 8 own, easy barbecues, there’s always grilling.

13Apple has entered the textbook market. The tech giant(科技巨头) introduced iBooks textbooks a couple of weeks ago when it announced its iBooks 2 platform(平台).

They are digital books in a variety of subjects taking in science, math, history and geography.

Apple developed its iPad-based textbooks in conjunction(连接)with major textbook publishers. The company offers a collection of textbooks for high school students.

Apple claims it offers a “new textbook experience” and suggests its interactive iBooks textbooks are “the next chapter in learning”.

It sounds like good news for pupils and students. Think of it. No more carrying heavy backpacks full of textbooks. Every textbook you require can be stored on your iPad. No more having to buy expensive textbooks which you will only use for a year or two and then sell or give away.

Of course there’s a catch. You need to own an iPad and as you know, it is not cheap. You also need to buy digital textbooks, mostly priced each at $14.99 (94.74 yuan) or less. Textbook publishing was worth $8.7 billion in the US alone last year. Will digital books take over completely in education?

1What can we find this kind of passage?

AIn a magazine. BIn a science book. CIn the newspaper. DIn a textbook.

2According to the passage above, why iPads are better than our traditional textbooks?

ABecause students don’t need to carry heavy books.

BBecause they can store many subjects.

4What’s the writer’s opinion toward this new technology?

AHe completely agreed with it BHe thinks high school students like it.

5How will the writer continue this passage?

ATo talk about the disadvantages and advantages about iPads.

BTo introduce the history about the paper making and see if iPads will enter the new market.

CTo tell us how the high school students use iPads.

DTo ask people to use their traditional textbooks instead of iPads.

14Our environment is being polluted faster. Man’s present efforts cannot prevent it .Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more cars, larger cities and the growing use of man-made materials.

What can explain and solve this problem ?The fact is that pollution is caused by man ----by his desire(欲望) for a modern way of life. We make “industrialization(工业化)”our main aim. So we seem to be ready to give up everything: clear air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. Large numbers of people are moving from the countryside into the cities, looking forward to the modern life. But as our world has developed so fast in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.

Isn’t it time for us to stop to ask ourselves where we are going-----and why? It makes one think of the story about the airline pilot who was heard over the loudspeaker, “I’ve some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we’re flying at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we’re lost and don’t know where we’re going.” The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when we talk about our modern society.(社会)

3What does the writer really want to say in this passage?

DAs industry is growing fast, pollution is the natural result.

15Working as a vet (兽医), I met a family who taught me an unforgettable lesson. They came to my clinic with their dying dog Coco. I examined Coco and found he was old and had a serious illness. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Coco, and euthanasia (安乐死) would be best for the dog.

On that day, they little boy Eric seemed so calm , petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if Eric understood what was going on.

The little boy seemed to accept Coco’s death without any difficulty. We sat together for a while after Coco's death, explaining that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Eric, who had been listening quietly, piped up: "I know why."

He said, "People need a lifetime to learn how to live a good life—like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The six-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

I’d never heard a more soft-hearted explanation as to why animal lives are so short. It has changed the way I live. I see everyday as the day that my life could be easily taken away, so I try to live my life to the fullest.

16 Hannah walked alone in the woods and felt sad. She was nine years old but she had already seen many changes in her short life. They weren’t all bad things, some were pretty wonderful. Hannah loved having her new little sister and her stepmother, Emma, was just lovely. She had to start at another school soon, but she was always able to make friends. Even so, her secret self-wished that things didn’t have to change at all.

Why do people have to leave, families move, a little girl grows up?These thoughts made her feel worried.

Hannah kicked a stone on the path and it hit a huge oak tree. She walked nearer to the tree. Am I dreaming? Hannah rubbed her eyes. The tree was moving! Its big branches were reaching out to her. Soon, she was encircled by branches and leaves. Then she became one with the tree. Her brown hair grew longer and longer, as it curled around the leaves. Her body grew lean and strong and it mixed with the outer covering of tree until they shared one trunk. Her arms and legs reached out finger and higher. Finally, Hannah’s spirit softly settled into its new home and she became a forest goddess.

Hannah was now part of the woodland. Seasons changed and brought wonder and warmth to her. Winter was quiet and peaceful. In the springtime, she breathed in the rich smell of the soil and enjoyed the green new life in the forest. Her favorite season was autumn. Her leaves became magnificent colors and she loved to watch them dancing in wind.

Hannah observed how things didn’t stay the same in nature’s world. She saw young animals born and the spirit of old creatures pass on. Within the tree, she spent hours watching the clouds move across the sky. Sometimes it was fair, and sometimes heavy and gray. In the evening she watched the stars twinkle against the night sky. As part of the forest, Hannah came to love the changing world around her.

Suddenly, a nut hit her head. A squirrel hid from the tree quickly. Oh, she realized herself napping under the oak tree. What a wonderful dream! Hannah learned her cheek against the bark and gave thanks for their time together. Then she went back home, thinking and smiling.

13The government in China plans to end its one-child policy and let families have two children instead. The change is meant to balance population development stop a falling birth rate( 出生率) and strengthen(增加) the country’s labor force(劳动力).

China with the largest population in the world started the one –child policy in 1980. But the government allowed only a small number of couples to have two children. For example some families in the countryside could have two children if the first-born child is a girl.

In 2013 the Chinese government gave other couples a chance to have two children if one of them was an only child.

At the end of 2014 China had a population of 1.37 billion people. A total of 800 million of them have jobs. But the labor market population will drop in 35 years. That is to say the country will be in great need of labor by the year 2050. With the two-child policy an increase in births can solve this problem.

But too many young people in the cities are no longer interested in having a second child. Boys and girls what do you think of the two-child policy? Do you want to have a new-born brother or a sister?

1Why does the government plan to end the one-child policy?

ABecause we need a larger population.

BBecause millions of people have jobs.

CBecause most families want to have a second child.

2The meaning of “two-child policy” is______.

3When will our country be seriously short of labor if the one-child policy continues?

16 In 1921, long before the Walt Disney Company turned Pooh (维尼熊) into an international star of TV and films, Christopher Robin Milne was given a toy bear on his first birthday from his father, AAMilne, who bought the stuffed animal from a store. The stuffed animal was named Edward Bear. Years later, Edward was named Winnie. From the time Christopher Robin Milne was a baby until he was about 8 years old, he would receive different stuffed animals.

AAMilne was a famous English author. As he watched his son interact (互动)with Winnie and friends, AAMilne thought his child's interaction with the collection of animals would make a great bedtime story. So Milne worked with artist Ernest H. Shepard and wrote the first Winnie the Pooh poem, where Edward Bear was known as “Teddy Bear” The writings appeared in Punch magazine and in the book they wrote together, When We Were Very Young, which was published in 1924. In a four-year period, three more books that centered on the bear and his team followed: 1926's Winnie-the-Pooh, 1927' Now We Are Six, and 1928's The House at Pooh Corner.

The books and poems about Pooh brought great success to the author, and the characters became favorites with young children and their families around the world. Their popularity led Disney to get the rights to make films about the characters in 1961. Five years later, Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and the rest of the team appeared on screen for the first time in Winnie-the-Pooh and the Honey Tree. 19My English Study

How time flies! My three-year middle school life will be over soon. Looking back, I have many memories of my English study.

First, listen more. Listening to the radio is a good way to learn English. We can relax ourselves by listening to English songs. Second, say more. Use spoken English when communicating with classmates. Speaking English can enhance the ability and confidence to learn English well. Third, read more English books. Reading can broaden our horizon and help us understand English culture. In addition, learn some grammar rules to better understand and use English. Finally, we can write about our daily life.

In a word, only when we develop interest in studying English can we learn it well.

14 A new rubbish sorting system (垃圾分类系统) has been put into use in Fangchengyuan Community in Beijing. Local people not only sort their rubbish, but also put QR codes (二维码) on it.

“When the rubbish is collected and the codes are seen, I will get reward points to exchange for small gifts and even some money,” one of the local people told reporter. “It’s really creative and encouraging.”

China produces quite a lot of rubbish every year. Much of the rubbish is buried (填埋) in soil or burned without being sorted. Landfills (填埋场) take up a lot of land and have a risk of polluting the soil and water nearby. And burning rubbish can produce harmful gases. Through rubbish sorting, we can reduce the use of landfills and air pollution.

What’s more, rubbish sorting saves resources, which could bring economic benefits (经济利益). For example, a ton of waste paper can be reused to make about 850 kg of paper, saving 17 trees and 50 percent of water. Because of their benefits, some countries have developed successfully sorting systems.

Japan has a strict and detailed system. When people throw away a water bottle, the cap, the wrapper (包装纸) and the bottle itself have to go into three different bins.

In Australia, every family is provided with three rubbish bins—the red lid (盖子) bin for “general waste” like food and plastic bags, the yellow lid bin for “recycling” like steel and glass, and the green lid bin for “green waste” such as grass and leaves. On the streets, the bins are printed with pictures of the things that are allowed inside. It makes recycling quite easy.

1What will local people probably get if they put daily rubbish into the new system in Fangchengyuan Community?

AA computer. BA car. CA lot of money. DSome small gifts.

2Which of the following is NOT the result of burying rubbish?

APolluting soil. BPolluting water.

CTaking up a lot of land. DSaving resources.

3Which paragraph discusses the economic benefits of rubbish sorting?

AParagraph 3. BParagraph 4. CParagraph 5. DParagraph 6.

4In Australia, which bin should you put food left after dinner in?

AThe red lid bin. BThe yellow lid bin.

CThe green lid bin. DThe black lid bin.

5Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

AIn Australia, the green lid bin is used for all kinds of recyclable wastes.

BIn Japan, all kinds of things for recycling are printed on rubbish bins.

CJapanese people cannot throw a bottle into a bin unless they move away the wrapper first.

DIn Australia, much of the rubbish is buried in soil or burned without being sorted.

15All our food comes from the soil. Some of us eat meat, but animals live on plants. If there are no plants, we will have no animals and meat. So the soil is necessary for us to live. The top of ground is usually covered with grass or other plants. Plants grow in soil, which has a dark color. This dark soil is humus. Dead leaves, dead plants and animals’ waste make it, but this takes a long time.

When the humus has been made, plants can grow well in it. All soil needs food. If we don’t give it any, the plants will be weak. Animals’ waste is the best food for the soil, but chemical fertilizers (化肥) are also very useful. The same crop should not be grown in the same place every year. It is better to have a different crop. A change of crop and the use of a good fertilizer will keep the land in good condition.

When the soil is dry, the wind blows it away. Sometimes heavy rain carries the humus down to a river. People should grow more and more trees and grass to stop wind from carrying the humus away. It takes hundreds of years to make humus, and so we must save every bit of it. Without soil, where can we grow food?

1From the text, we know people live on _________.

Aanimal Bplant Cmeat Dsoil

2The word humus means _________ in Chinese.

A.微生物 B.土壤 C.腐殖土 D.粘土

3We should ________ to keep the soil.

Agive more fertilizers Bkill more animals

Cmake more humus Dgrow more trees and grass

4We should save every bit of humus, because _________.

Ait takes a long time to make humus

Bthe more humus in the soil, the better plants grow

Cthe chemical fertilizers are expensive

DA and B

5The best title of this article should be _________.

ASoil is necessary to people

BThe same crop can’t be grown in the same place every year

CSoil’s food is chemical fertilizers

DHumus is hard to mak

18Lisa, 6, used to argue with her mum about everything. One day, after an hour of arguing, Lisa said, "Mum, you never let me make decisions. You always decide what we are going to eat or where we are going to go. "

The next day her mum called, "Lisa, you can decide what you are going to eat. I'll cook whatever you want, but you have to eat up whatever you ask for. " A big smile spread across Lisa's face. "Okay. I'd like bacon, sausages, toast, eggs and chocolate milk. "

Lisa liked this. She ate the bacon, sausages and toast, but when she finished her first egg, she was full. Lisa forced herself to eat up and then she walked to school. When she got to school, her stomach hurt, but by the time she was ready to go home, she had been back to normal.

Lisa had no problem finishing the steak, pie, peas, bread and butter, but when she started eating the chocolate cake, she felt very full. That night she had a stomachache. She was up all night crying and felt very sick.

The next morning she went to her mum, "Mum, I don't want to make all the choices any more. I want you to pick what we'll have for dinner in the future. "

Satisfied that Lisa had learned her lesson, her morn replied, "You can pick what to eat once a week, but don't ask for too much, all right?"

13 Architects(建筑师) have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical basis(实证依据). They are discovering how to design spaces that develop creativity, keep people focused, and lead to relaxation.

Researches show that the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room’s ceiling affects how people think. Her research suggests that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Low ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.

In addition to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence the owner’s ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.

Using nature to improve focus of attention ought to pay off academically(学术地), and it seems to, according to a study led by CKenneth Tanner, head of the School Design & Planning Laboratory at the University of Georgia. Tanner and his team found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms mainly overlooked roads and parking lots.

Recent study on room lighting design suggests that dim light helps people to loosen up. If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation. Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.

So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings. “We have a very limited number of studies, so we’re almost looking at the problem through a straw(吸管),” architect David Allison says. “How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That’s what we’re all struggling with.”

1What does Joan Meyers-Levy focus on in her research?

AThe height of the ceiling. BThe freedom of people.

CThe outlook of environment. DThe shape of the furniture.

2What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?

AThe classroom with roads around can be filled with more students.

BThe students in large classrooms can pay more attention on maths.

CThe views outside the window may affect the students’ grades.

DThe researchers in the University of Georgia may get higher scores.

3What can we learn from the passage?

ATest standards may encourage people to search more.

BStudents in a bright classroom may feel more relaxed.

CChildren in greenness may improve their grades quickly.

DRoom designs may influence people’s work and feelings.

14Many homes have cameras to protect them from danger. The cameras can tell the owners if someone has entered. But the cameras do not know whether the person is a family member, a friend, a postman or a criminal (罪犯).

But a new camera made by a French company can recognize (辨别出) faces. It can tell parents at work that their children have returned from school, or that the mail has been sent to their home. It can also tell them if a stranger has entered their home. When family members enter a home, the smart camera “recognizes” them and sends information to the owner’s phone. The owner can choose to see the video then or later. But if an unknown person enters a home, the camera will send a warning sound on the owner’s phone.

This is what happened recently to a smart home camera owner named Damien. He lives in Paris.

“On a Friday I was at work, having a big monthly meeting when my phone moved. At first I told myself ‘Oh, it must be a wrong warn,’ but my phone was telling me there was a face that the camera did not recognize. Something was happening in my house!”

“I saw a person I did not know with his shoes on, which is not allowed in my apartment (公寓). I watched it on the video. I felt quite surprised. I hurried back home as fast as possible and called the police on the way. Thanks to the smart camera, the criminal was caught soon,” said Damien.

1The new smart camera is different from the ones in many homes because it can _________.

Aprotect the owner Bhelp a school child

Crecognize faces Dcall the police

2In Damien’s apartment, people can’t _______.

Awear shoes Bwatch videos

Chave cameras Dsend mails

15Have you ever heard your own voice? “Of course,” you say. Has anyone else ever heard your voice? Again you say, “Of course.”But that’s not quite true. Nobody else has ever heard your voice—the way you hear it. When you talk, you set up sound waves(声波). The air outside your head carries the sound waves to your outer ears. But, of course, the sound of your voice begins inside your head. The bones(骨头) of your head pick up the sound waves, too. They carry the sound waves straight to your inner(里面的) ears. You get the sound from the outside and the inside too. Other people get just the sound waves from the outside. That’s why they don’t hear your voice the way you do.

16I heard the following curious story from a railway acquaintance (相识的人). He was a gentleman of more than seventy years of age, and his good face and sincere manner put the stamp of truth on everything he said.

“You know, in Siam the royal white elephant is very important. It is sacred to kings, and only kings can have a white elephant. And white elephants are more important than the king.”

Very well…five years ago…

After a misunderstanding between the countries, the King of Siam decides to send the Queen of England a present. This present must be a royal one. And what present can be as royal as a white elephant? It is my job to deliver the present to her Majesty the Queen. I travel with my servants, and the officers and helpers of the elephant, in a ship. Soon we arrive in New York harbour and I find a place for my royal elephant to stay in Jersey City. The elephant is not well and we must stay in New York until the doctors say he is better and can travel again.

_________________________________. I get a phone call in the middle of the night: the white elephant is stone! For some moments I feel helpless. Then I become calmer. There is only one thing I can do. I hurry to New York City and ask the first policeman that I meet to bring me to the headquarters (总部) of the police force. I am fortunate. The chief of the force, the well-known Inspector Blunt, is there. I tell him everything. He does not seem at all surprised. He asks me to sit down and says calmly, “Let me think for a moment, please.”

Then he sits down at his office table and leans his head on his hand. Some people are working at the other end of the room. For the next six or seven minutes the only sound I can hear is the sound of their pens. The inspector sits quietly, thinking. Finally he raises his head, and I can see from his face that he has a plan.

--- From The Stolen White Elephant

1Why does the King of Siam decide to send a present to the Queen of England?

ABecause he wants to fight against England.

BBecause he wants to show he is friendly.

CBecause the Queen’s birthday is coming.

DBecause there is a misunderstanding between them.

2What does the phrase put the stamp of truth on everything he said mean?

AHis words are just jokes. BHis words are not all true.

CPeople can believe his words. DHe often posts the letters with stamps.

3Which of the following sentence can be put in the blank?

AThe day passes without any other result.

BIt all started with a very simple idea.

CEverything seems to be all right and they arrive there.

DAll goes well for two weeks --- then my problems begin.

4According to the passage, we can infer that__________________.

Ainspector Blunt seems to know who the thief is

Binspector Blunt is very famous in New York City

Cthe white elephant is dead in the middle of the night

Dpeople can own white elephants besides kings in Siam

18Silk production has a long history and colourful history unknown to most people. Scientific discoveries have shown that silk production began in China around 2,500 BC, although it could be much older. For hundreds of years, China kept the secret of silk to itself as one for the most closely protected secrets in history. Anyone telling the secret of silkworms or trying to take silkworm eggs out of ancient China was punished in prison.

At one time silk was served only for the Chinese emperor. Step by step, others began wearing silk. In addition to being used for clothing, silk was used to make musical instruments, fishing lines, ropes and even paper. During the Han Dynasty silk became a form of money.

These were used to set up silk factories in Rome, although Chinese silk was still considered to be the best.

Silk was brought to Rome from China by means of the Silk Road. There were actually two Silk Roads, one over land and one on the sea. Especially the land route had a huge effect in history. All sorts of trade goods were passed along this road. Ideas travelled the Silk Road, too. For example, the religion of Buddhism(佛教) was carried to China from India by traders on the Silk Road. The Silk Road created the first international culture, showing many people the ideas and treasures of both Western and Chinese cultures.

19What can you do for your school?

As we all know we will leave school in June. So this week our class hold a class meeting. We discussed about what we can do for our school. All of us gave our own ideas. Students in Group 1 thought that we could present our used books and school things to the students in Grade 7 and Grade 8. Especially, we can give them to the poor students. They need our help. Students in Group 2 thought that we could raise our pocket money. The books in library are old and little. So we can use the money to buy some new books for the school library so that more students can get more and latest information from books. Students in Group 3 thought we can plant some plants and flowers in the school. That may make our school more beautiful. Anyway, we have studied here for three years, we love our school. We hope our school will be better and better and we should study hard and one day our school will be proud of us.

15Hearing the front door open, I ran down to the kitchen and waited. I saw my dad come in, with the white envelope (信封) in his hand. I had waited all day for this, so I reached over him for it as soon as he set foot into the house. Angrily, he threw the envelope on the table and said it was nothing to get excited about, and that it was just a piece of paper. I took it and ran upstairs. I wondered why my dad did not understand how anxious (急切) I was to see my mid-year report card for my first year in middle school. I was really hurt by how he refused to consider all my hard work.

I saw my class grade: No. 1. I did not believe what I was. I smiled and wanted to run downstairs to tell everyone. Then I remembered what my dad had said—it was nothing to get excited about. I wanted to share my happiness with someone, but felt lonely.

I realized that I stayed away from my family we used to stay up late watching Disney movies, and my brothers, sisters and I would play tennis in the backyard all the time. I wondered when all that stopped. I just no longer took part in them. I spent all my time on my school work.

While I had been busy with my study, I had also built a wall between me and my family.

I was only trying to become a person everyone could be proud of. I wanted to go downstairs, say sorry for my rude behavior and for every refused movie and tennis game, and be part of my family again. I knew I had to do something—because without their support, my achievement meant nothing.

Most people are kind-hearted and want to lend a helping hand. Now let's share some memorable moments.

Linda: Once, when I was on my way back to my hometown, I lost my purse without even knowing it. I was told over the train’s loudspeaker that my purse was at the railway station's lost and found office. But the train had already started. Seeing my helplessness, a kind hostess offered to lend me some money. I went back to the railway station and got my purse. I am still thankful to the railway staff and the person who found my purse.

Scott: When I was a little boy, there was a time when I went to fish with my elder sister. All of a sudden, I slipped into the river. The next thing I remember is my father holding me in the hospital. Today I still don’t know who got me out of that river. I have been trying to help other people whenever I can all these years.

Tina: One of my neighbors is an old man who cannot speak. He makes money by recycling waste. Our other neighbors don't like his behavior. But in my opinion, it's his way to support his family. Once, after cleaning my house, I placed some cardboard boxes in his garden and left my rubbish beside my door. However, when I was about to go out, I found nothing outside my door but a note: "I have thrown away your rubbish. You are a nice girl. Thanks a lot!"

17Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost mention recycling. Recycling in the homes is very important. However, having to recycle often means we already have more products than we need. We are just dealing with the results of thatover-consumptionin the greenest way, but it would be much better if we did not bring so many goods home.

The total amount of packaging(外包装) has increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It is 1/3 of a home’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets, food products are packaged twice with plastic and paper. Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of land because of this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Besides, the plastic from the package puts some creatures in danger, especially birds and fish.

Recycling helps, but the recycling itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such waste in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, few of them have the idea that this cannot continue. For example, supermarkets should encourage customers to reuse their plastic bags.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have been used to the idea that packaging means excellence while anything unpackaged is of poor condition. This is especially true of food. But this idea has spread to other products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how many unnecessary goods are collected. We need to face the waste of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

18Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffeethey don't all have the same coffee culture. In Europe for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed, when Starbucks (星巴克) coffee shops spread throughout the country

The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washingtonin the USAIt was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop's business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.

Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment (设备) . He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company's head of marketing (市场营销).

In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso (浓咖啡) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores in the USAThen the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16,000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.

Howeverthat does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing (竞争) for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the comfortable environment offered by Starbucks.

3Why did so many Starbucks close in small areas

ABecause the coffee in these places was too expensive

BBecause the style of the coffee stores seems the same

CBecause people like to drink coffee at home with friends

DBecause there were too many coffee shops in one place

4To tell us the story of Starbucks, the writer did the following except .

Dtelling what Starbucks did to deal with his problems

5What's the best title for the passage

19Dear friends,

I’m very glad to talk about my English study here. My name is Li Jie. I used to be an extremely shy and introverted girl and was not interested in English. I seldom raised my hand in class. As a result, I often failed in English exams. I was so depressed that I wanted to give up my English. It's you, my classmates, who helped me in time. So I began to take English learning seriously.

Over the past two years, I think my English has improved a lot. I dreamed to study in an English-speaking country and I always wanted to visit America because it always seemed to me a very beautiful and friendly country. I think my English will make great progress there.

Thank you.

Whether you like it or not, your parents are responsible for you, at least until you’ re out of high school. But does it feel like your parents are stressing you out with their love? Do you often fight with them?

Hu Muqing, 16, of Shenyang, complains that his parents only care about his grades and not his other needs. He and his parents fight the most about the time he spends watching TV and on the Internet. The Shenyang teenager said, “They think I should concentrate on my work because I’m in middle school. However, I need to be able to relax. Most of my friends can watch TV and surf the Web a lot. Sometimes it’s hard to talk to them.” After some negotiations (商谈), Hu has been allowed to watch TV for 15 to 20 minutes every night, but has been told to keep away from the computer.

Shen Ying, 17, of Jianyang, Sichuan Province, feels she has grown up now. So she wants more respect(尊重) from her parents. “My father shouted at me when he’s in a bad mood. He doesn’t listen to me, but instead acts like, ‘I’m the boss’!” said the teenager “I’d like my parents to treat me like a friend and understand that respect is a two-way street.”

Lu Yiting, 15, of Shantou, has a different problem with her parents. They think she spends too much time with her friends and is falling into bad company. “I want trust(信任) from my parents,” Lu said.

It’s the age when teenagers are becoming more independent, but their parents care very much about their kids’ futures, said Sun Yunxiao, a senior researcher at the China Youth and Children Research Center. Sun suggests that teenagers should learn to communicate with their parents effectively. “Find the right time for a talk. On Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, say ‘Thank you’ to your parents or give them a small gift with a letter so they can get inside your head a little,” he advised. Sun also believes that teenagers have to work to get trust and respect from their parents. “You need to make sure they know that you’ re not going to screw up(搞砸) your exams or let them down. Let them know that you want to do well, and that you will do well” he said.

14The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can, hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between humans and computers. Computers don't forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don't usually have to. But everyone can improve their memory if they want to. Here are some suggestions.

◆Try to use new information immediately*. For example, if you meet someone who says "Hi! I'm Carlos," don't just say "Hello." Repeat the person's name. Say "________"

◆Break a big number into smaller parts. For example, it's hard to memorize 109244153. But if you break it into three parts--109/244/153—it becomes easier.

◆Write out what you need to remember over and over again. This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially for memorizing formulas * or facts.

◆Always review information. If you bring what you've learned back to your mind, they become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to review the new things you learned that clay.

◆Discuss with a friend. It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can have a discussion about what's right and what's wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.

◆Never tell yourself that you have a bad memory. You can always do something to help improve your memory. And everyone's memory gets better if they use it often enough.

All of the suggestions are helpful. If you follow them, you are certain to improve your memory.

18“Joe, did you book your ticket yet?” I asked. “No. I changed my mind. I’m not going to go.”“What? You aren’t going to Australia? We’ve been planning this vacation for months!”“Yeah, I don’t feel like it. We’ll go some other time.”

Over the coming weeks, I tried to get my friend to reconsider, but failed. Our trip to Australia was off. And none of my friends wanted to replace him. If I wanted to travel, it would have to be on my own.

It’s taught me that if I wait for others, I’ll never go anywhere. But there are places I want to visit, people to see, experiences to have, and food to try—and only so much time to achieve it all. So I refuse to wait. I won’t let others keep me from realizing my dreams. It can be scary travelling alone, especially then you’ve never done it before. But, to me, growing old without experiencing everything you want from life is more frightening.

If you’re been putting off a trip because you’re waiting for someone to go with—stop. Just go. Don’t let others hold you back from your dreams. Trust me, along the way you’ll make plenty of friends. More than that, travelling alone gives you real freedom. You wake up and it’s just you—what you want, where you want, when you want. In that freedom and great space of possibility, you meet yourself.

It’s sink or swim and you have to learn how to survive—who to trust, how to make friends, how to find your way around alone. That’s the greatest reward(奖赏) of travelling alone. Each time you go away, you learn to become a little more independent and confident.

Travelling alone is not for everyone. Some people return home soon after starting off, some cry for weeks before accepting it, and others just accept it right away. But you’ll never learn that if you don’t travel once by yourself. Whether a weekend away, a two-week vacation, or a trip around the world, try it at least once.

1What does the writer think is more frightening?

ATravelling alone for the first time.

BChanging your mind all the time.

CWaiting for others during a long trip.

DFailing to experience life in your growth.

2The underlined words “hold you back from your dreams” in Paragraph 4 probably mean“______”.

Aget you out of trouble Bstop you from travelling

Ckeep you waiting for them Dwake you up from your dream

3According to the writer, the best reward of travelling alone is _____.

Athe experience of travelling

Bthe freedom to go anywhere

Cthe chance to taste delicious food

Dthe possibility of meeting new people

4The passage is mainly about__________.

Awhere to travel Bwhen to travel

Chow to travel safely Dwhy to travel alone

19One possible version:

We will have a school trip next week. However, it is said that mobile phones will not be allowed to take with us. Will you agree and follow the new school rule?

Recently, a survey about “Would you like to take your mobile phone” has been carried out in our class. Here are the results. 30% of the students in my class agree. They think mobile phones are expensive for middle school students and easy to lose. There will be less communication if everyone takes a phone. Therefore, middle school students don’t need phones much when going on a spring outing. However, most of the students disagree because they need phones to contact with their parents. Also, phones make their lives more colourful. They can use phones to do many things like taking photos and so on.

In fact, mobile phones are more and more popular and common in our daily lives. It is more important to know how to use them well. We shouldn’t play games on phones all the time or keep chatting on QQ or WeChat. We should use them properly.

16Once a tiger was in a cage. Soon a good man went by. As soon as the tiger saw the man, the tiger began to cry. “Please! Please!” the tiger called. “Please, let me out.” “No,” said the good man. “If I do, you will eat me.” “I will not eat you,” the tiger said. “Please let me out.”

The good man believed the tiger. He opened the door of the cage. The tiger jumped out. “How silly you are,” the tiger laughed. “Now I am going to eat you.” “Wait!” the man cried. “You ought not to eat me. Let us ask others what they think.” “You may ask three others. ” the tiger said.

The good man asked a tree. The tree said, “I give shade (树荫). And yet I am cut down. Let the tiger eat you.”

Next, the good man asked a bird. The bird said, “I hurt no one. Yet people hunt and kill me. Let the tiger eat you.”

The last one that the good man asked was a road. The road said, “I don’t care if the tiger eats you. People could not get along too well without me. Yet all day and all night people step on me without even a ‘thank you’.”

The tiger was ready to eat the good man. Just then a dog came by. “What is happening?” asked the dog. The man told the dog the whole story.

“I don’t understand,” said the dog. “The tiger wants to eat you because you put him in a cage?”

“No, no,” said the man. “Some other men put him in a cage.”

“Oh,” the dog said. “He is going to eat you because you do not have a cage.”

“Silly dog!” the tiger cried. “Don’t you understand? I was in the cage. This man let me out.”

“Oh, I see,” the dog said. “When the man was in the cage, you let him out.”

“I was in the cage!” the tiger cried. “In this way!” with that, he jumped back into the cage.

At once, the dog closed the door of the cage. “Oh,” the dog laughed. “At last I understand!”

17Mark began to introduce the guest speaker to the listeners, but then stopped for a while. He had forgotten her name.

Barbara hid her valuable things when she went on vacation. When she came back, she couldn’t remember where she’d put them.

Perhaps you’ve had such experiences like these. Most people have. But most of them haven’t realized that they have a memory problem. Neither do they know a simple but important fact: Memory can be improved. If you just accept that, the following will show you how.

First, relax. If you are over worried about something, you’ll forget it. If you keep telling yourself that your memory is bad, your mind will come to believe it and you won’t remember things. When you forget something, don’t follow up with saying like “Oh, my god! I always forget things! ” Such words will have a bad result on you and your memory.

But relaxing isn’t enough. To improve your memory, you’ll need to take an active role. Like your body, your memory can be made strong through exercise. Look foropportunitiesto exercise your memory. For example, if you’re learning a language, try to actively remember a lot of new words.

If you don’t take notice of things actively, you won’t remember them. So, you can make pictures of what you see in your mind every day. For example, don’t just put your keys down! If you want to find them again, make a mind picture of the place where you’re putting them.

16Mark began to introduce the guest speaker to the listeners, but then stopped for a while.

Look for chances to exercise your memory.

17Thousands of years ago, people didn’t know that the Earth moved. They thought the sun really did move across the sky. The Greek god Helios was said to drive the sun across the sky with his chariot (战车). But now, the way people think has changed. Nowadays, it is the sun that drives a “chariot” around the sky.

What do I mean by this? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane (or “chariot”) that is powered by the sun. It has special parts on its wings. These parts absorb (吸收) power from the sun. They absorb so much power that the plane can still fly even at night. In Greek mythology (神话), Helios had to take a break at night. It seems we’re finally even more powerful than the gods themselves.

This plane is called Solar Impulse. It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.

Why is solar energy (太阳能) important? Well, other kinds of energy are known to cause problems. If you live in China, you’ve probably noticed the pollution. This is caused by burning coal and gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals created by burning these things give us power. But if we use power from the sun, we don’t have to burn anything and there will not be any pollution.

Solar energy is not entirely ready yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn’t run out. The Solar Impulse plane could pretty much keep flying forever. Of course, the sun’s light will eventually run out too one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That’s a pretty long flight.

1The plane Solar Impulse ______.

Acannot fly at night Bis powered by chemicals

Cis driven by solar energy Dwas made in the US

2Paragraph 4 mainly tells us that ______.

Ausing solar energy causes less pollution

Bsolar energy is the best kind of energy

Ccreating energy by burning things causes pollution

Dburning things will not be allowed in China

3Which is the story probably taken from?

AA science magazine. BA history textbook.

CA Greek myth. DA storybook.

4What’s the story mainly about?

AThe story of the Greek god Helios.

BHow China makes use of energy.

CThe uses and advantages of solar energy.

DThe disadvantages of burning coal and gas.

This kid fights hunger and homelessnessAustin Perine is only four years old. His story started this past February in the living room in Birmingham. Austin and his father, TJ Perine, were watching a program about a mother panda leaving her babies. “I told him that the babies would be homeless for a while,” TJ says. “Austin didn't know what homelessness meant, but he was sad and wanted to know more.” Seeing this as a teachable moment, TJ took Austin to the Firehouse Ministries, a local shelter (救济中心) that provides housing and food for homeless men.As they drove by, they saw 25 homeless men standing on the street corner. “Dad, they look sad,” Austin said. “Can we take them some food and make them smile?”Austin used his pocket money to buy each man a Burger King hamburger and handed thefood out himself. Seeing what the burgers meant to the men, Austin returned the next week.He handed out burgers along with his catchphrase (口号), “Don't forget to show love!”After he returned for five weeks, word of Austin's acts of kindness spread throughsocial⁃media.
