第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

(A)

You may have heard the term “the American Dream”. In 1848, James W. Marshall found gold in California and people began having golden dreams.

That 19th century “American Dream" motivated(激发) the Gold Rush and gave California its nickname of the "Golden State".

The American Dream drove not only 1800s gold-rush prospectors but also waves of immigrants throughout that century and the next. People from Europe, and a large number of Chinese, arrived in the US in the 19th century hoping that in America they would find gold in the streets. But most. instead, worked as railroad laborers. They created the oldest Chinatown, in San Francisco, and gave the city a Chinese name "the old gold hill".

In the 20th century, some critics said that it was no longer possible to become prosperous through determination and hard work. Unfair education for students from poor families and racial discrimination almost made the American Dream a nightrnare.

Then, in the 1990s, California saw a new wave of dreamers in Silicon Valley. People poured their energy into the Internet. This new chapter of the American Dream attracted many business people and young talents from China and India to form start-ups and seek fortune in America.

Better pay, a nice house, and a rising standard of living will always be attractive. However, the new American Dream .is no longer just about money. It encourages Americans to consume wisely to protect the environment, improve the quality of life, and promote social justice.

The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger has become the model of the new American Dream. Last night was the last game for my eight-year-old son’s soccer team. It was the final quarter. The score was two to one, my son’s team in the lead (领先). Parents surrounded the playground, offering encouragement.

Then they were silence. Mickey had scored all right, but in the wrong goal, ending the game in a tie. For a moment there was a total hush. You see. Mickey has Down syndrome (综合症) and for him there is no such thing as a wrong goal. All goals were celebrated by a joyous hug from Mickey. Language is a major problem for the European Union (EU). The agreement or treaty which created the organization that eventually became the EU, the Treaty of Rome, stated that each country’s language must be treated equally, The original six countries had only three languages between them: French, GERMAN AND Dutch/ Flemish. However, there are now fifteen countries in the EU, with a total of twelve languages. EU documents must be translated" into all these languages and at official meetings the speeches must be translated into all the languages by interpreters.

All this translating is very expensive and time consuming. It is said that nearly half of all employees of the EU are engaged in translating documents and speeches; and nearly half of the EU's administrative(管理方面的) costs are spent on this task. In the near future it is probable that several more countries, most of which have their own languages, will join the EU thus making the situation even worse.

The problem is not just cost; there are practical difficulties as well. With 12 languages, there are 132 possible "translation situations" that might be needed. It is often difficult to find people in the right place at the right time who can translate from (for example, Danish into Greek, or Dutch into Portuguese) at a high professional standard.

In practice the problem has been made less severe by the use of English in many contacts between EU officials, since almost all of them speak some English. However, any move to reduce the number of official languages (perhaps to four or five) would be a blow to the pride of the smaller countries. Another commonly suggested solution is to make English the official language for all EU business. However, this is strongly resisted by powerful member countries like France and Germany.

45. The organization that eventually became the EU__________.

A. was started by France and German

B. started with three countries

C. was set up by the Treaty of Rome

D. included 132 languages

46. What’s the main purpose of this passage?

A. To give a solution to a problem.

B. To find out a problem and show how severe it is.

C. To criticize the European Union for its inefficiency.

D. To show that the problem cannot be solved.

47.The writer mentions “Danish into Greek” as an example of______.

A. a situation that might be difficult to deal with

B. a situation that occurs often

C. one of the 12 situations that requires an interpreter

D. languages easily being interpreted

48. The writer suggests that if the number or official language was reduced______.

A. the EU would not know which official language to choose.

B. countries whose languages were not used officially would be unhappy.

C. only languages which are easy to translate would be used officially

D. the smaller member countries would be pleased

(D)

Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to deal with it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem--how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which uses not only body heat, but the heat- given off by such Objects as light bulbs (灯泡) and fridges as well. The system works so well that no commonly used fuel is needed to make the campus's six buildings comfortable.

Some parts of most modern buildings—theatres and offices as well as classrooms are more than amply (充分地) heated by people and lights and they sometimes must be air-conditioned even in winter. The technique of saving heat and sharing it out again in a different way is called "heat recovery" A few modern buildings recover heat, hut the University's system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and reuse it in others.

Along the way, Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its heat producers. The harder a student studies, the more heat his body gives off. Male students send out more heat than female students and the larger the student is. the more heat he produces. It sounds rather reasonable to draw a conclusion that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hard-working, over-weight male student who is very clever in the university.

49. The heat in the heating system of the Johnstown campus is supplied by_____________.

A. human bodies

B. human bodies arm electrical equipment

C. haman bodies and commonly used fuel

D. human bodies, electrical equipment and fuel

50. The technique of heat recovery is used to __________.

A. find out the source of heat

B. produce a special form of air conditioning

C. provide the heat for the hot water system

D. collect and reuse heat

51. _____________ would produce the least amount of heat.

A. A fat boy student who is clever and studies hard

B. A fat girl student who is both clever and hardworking

C. A thin girl student who is not clever and does not study hard

D. A thin boy student who is neither clever nor hard-working

52. A good title for this passage would be ____________.

A. A New Heat Recovery System in Pittsburgh University

B. Modern Building's Heat System

C. The Best Way to Save Fuel or Electricity

D. Recovery of Body’s Heat in the Pittsburgh University

How much paper do you use every year Probably you can’t answer that question quickly In 1900 the world‘s use of paper was about one kilogram for each person in a year. Now some countries use more than 200 kilograms of paper for each person in a year. The amount of paper a country uses shows how far advanced the country is, some people say. It is difficult to say whether this is true: different people mean different things by the word "advanced". But countries like the United States, England and Sweden certainly use more paper than other countries.

Paper, like many other things that we use today, as first made in China, in Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly used before the year 1400. The Egyptians wrote on papyrus (纸草) ;the Europeans used parchment (羊皮纸) for many hundreds of years. Parchment was very strong; it was made from the skin of certain young animals. We have learnt some of the most important facts of European history from records that were kept on parchment.

The Chinese first made paper about 2000 years ago. But Chinese paper was not made from wood. It was made from the hair-like parts of certain plants.

53. Which of the following statements is true?

A. No one knows how much paper each person uses every year.

B. Someone knows how much paper each person uses every year.

C. It is not easy to know how much paper each person uses every year.

D. Each person uses about one kilogram of gaper in a year.

54. "The more paper a country uses, the less advanced it is." The statement is ___________.

A. true

B. not true

C. half-true

D. difficult to say whether it is true

55. Parchment was used______________.

A. to keep important facts of European history

B. to make paper

C. to keep records of European history once

D. to learn history

November 12, 2006 Sunday

Its Sunday today. My parents, who work very hard, went to work. So I was left alone this morning. The idea that I should do something for them occurred to me. So I wanted to give them a pleasant surprise by cooking the lunch for them. Although it was difficult for me to do it, I did my best to get everything ready before they came back. At 12:30, they returned, tired and hungry. Seeing the various dishes on the table, they were surprised and excited. They sang high praise for me. I felt very happy. In future I will do what I can to help my parents.
