The 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature went to the French novelist “for the art of
memory” with which he has “uncovered the life-world of the occupation”.
Although the 69-year-old writer is a very popular literary figure in France, he is
little known elsewhere.
So who is this Patrick Modiano, why does his memory have such an influence upon him, and what exactly has he uncovered
Modiano was born in a suburb of Paris right after World War II ended in Europe in
July 1945. His father was a Jewish-Italian businessman who met his Belgian actress mother during the Nazi occupation of Paris.
As The New Yorker magazine put it, Europeans born in 1945 share a condition-They
escaped the war, but “not the taint (污点) of the war”.
Modiano’s life has been influenced by Nazi Germany’s occupation during the war, and his family’s connections to it. According to New York-based newspaper Forward, his father survived the war dishonorably. When Paris’ Jews were brought together to be sent to concentration camps, the businessman did not join them but spent the time making money
from deals with Nazis on the black market.
“The novelist has a duty to record the lives of the people who have disappeared, the people who were made to disappear,” French writer Clemence Boulouque, also an expert in Jewish studies, told The New Yorker magazine.
In his more than three dozen novels, Modiano has returned again and again to the same themes: Jewishness, the Nazi occupation, and loss of identity. His characters collect
pieces of old evidence, handwriting, photographs, police files, and newspaper cuttings.
His most admired novel, Missing Person, is a good example. It’s the story about a detective who has lost his memory. He tries to find out who he really is by following his own steps through history.
Although Modiano’s win is a surprise outside France, people are celebrating in his

Flappy Bird is flapping(拍打) its wings no more. The popular game for mobile equipment was removed from online stores on Sunday by its Vietnamese creator. Who said its fame “destroys my simple life”
Dong Nguyen, who created the game in just two to three days, was making as much as
$50,000 a day from the game’s advertising income. In several Twitter posters, he said
the game’s removal was not due to legal issues(问题)and that he may make a follow-up.
Mr. Nguyen, who describes himself as an “ enthusiastic independent game maker”, also said on the micro-blogging mobile game so far. Coming out in May 2013, the game was free to download and required players to tap the screen to keep the bird in flight.
In spite of its simple graphs, Flappy Bird was an extremely difficult game since many users could only keep the bird in the air for a new seconds before it hits an obstacle

After Mr. Nguyen took the game down, many fans turned to social media to ask for its return. The game is no longer a available through online stores, but it still works on
phones that had previously downloads it. However, some fans expressed their relief that

Taiwan's annual university admissions tests are taking place this week. Tens of thousands of students trying to give the right answers to math and language questions.
High scores permit students to enter the top schools. However, these tests will not be in place for much longer. The current examinations require that students memorize facts in
high school classes. They do not test critical thinking or creative problem solving abilities.
Officials in Taiwan plan to change the admissions test to also measure imagination
and the ability to innovate (创新）.Taiwanese officials see the progress China and South Korea are making in the information technology field. By comparision，Taiwan is losing technology business. There is concern that younger people are afraid of the risk of
starting a company or inventing something.
The Ministry of Education wants to encourage young Taiwanese to innovate. So, it will
begin a new selection process for university students. They hope the best schools will
start to accept people with new business ideas. The new admissions policy will take
effect in 2018. It will include personal interviews with interested students. The Ministry wants high school graduates to show they excelled outside of class.
Ma Hsiang-ping is the ministry's deputy director for higher education. She said
the new exam system will look for people interested in invention or starting businesses. Taiwan will lose competitiveness if all the inventing is done in other countries. The
Ministry hopes new admissions policies will reshape the 12-year public education system.
Taiwan is dependent largely on high-tech exports. The Swiss business school，
