第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD项中,选出最佳选项。

A

In a movie that came out not too long ago, a 40-something woman reads a storybook to her friend’s daughter. As they approach the last page, she reads, “… and Cinderella and the prince lived happily ever after.” She closes the book and looks at the young girl, adding, “You know, things don’t always happen like this in real life. I just think you should know that now.”

We were all raised on fairy tales with glass slippers, valiant (勇敢的) princes and (best of all) magic! However, it didn’t take too long to realize that stories like that weren’t necessarily true. After a few misfortunes, you have learned that glass slippers are really uncomfortable, no prince is perfect and magic doesn’t always work when you need it to.

So what do you do when the way you planned things is not the way they turned out?

You need to know that parts of your fairy tale have already been written, and sadly, there’s not a whole lot you can do about those first few chapters. You didn’t get the best start. Your trust was unexpectedly betrayed. You didn’t get the job. Whatever falls and failures that happened in your past are just that… in your past. There’s still more to the story.

While your life has a lot of contributors (投稿者), you are the editor-in-chief. You take what’s there and create the masterpiece. All the good pages and the bad ones can come together to make a beautiful adventure.

When you find yourself wishing your life could be more like the fairy tales, remember that in some ways it already is. There will be dragons, wicked witches, great romances, winding roads and friends to help you along the way. So, keep rewriting your story every day as long as you’re alive. Whether it’s a comedy, a tragedy or a little of both, the pen is in your hand. And how it all ends is up to you.

We have all been there before: when we were enjoying a burger or French fries, sadly a big drop of sauce was on our clothes. But thanks to physical scientist, Quoc Truong, you may not have to worry about your dry cleaning bill ever again!

Truong and his team have been working on “self-cleaning clothing” for the past five years. Truong’s dream: clothing that won’t get dirty in the first place!

The U.S. Army has about a million soldiers. Each soldier owns five uniforms. With the constant wear and tear, there is a lot of laundry!

Challenged by a general (将军) to invent a uniform that didn’t need cleaning, Truong examined the fabric (织物) and the substances that make it dirty. To make uniforms that actually resist a wide range of water- or oil-based substances, Truong and his team have been working on what he calls an “omniphobic coating (涂层)”. “We really wanted to make a coating that once you apply it onto fabric, will keep away anything.”

How well does this uniform fabric resist dirt? Much of the testing is done on machines that Truong and his co-workers have had to invent themselves. The tests show that everyday substances, like chocolate sauce, tend to slide off the uniform fabric. The coated uniform fabric can even resist tough substances like motor oil. Truong has even figured out a solution for the smell that could come from clothes that don’t get washed and ironed.

Soldiers first tested the uniforms in 2011. Soon, the fabric will pass even stricter testing in a field test. Truong and his team are working to improve the self-cleaning fabric. One challenge is mud, especially when it gets into the fabric itself.

When all the imaginations have been worked out and testing is completed the possibilities are endless. It’s not just the military that could be using self-cleaning clothes. Commercial manufacturers have been attracted to using the omniphobic coating. So someday, both the military and the general public may not have to worry about cleaning clothes again.

31. Truong began to study self-cleaning clothing when .

A. a general challenged him to do so

C. be applied onto anything

D. be made of oil-based substances

33. The fifth paragraph mainly suggests that the omniphobic coating is .

A. smelly B. tough

C. effective D. normal

34. What is the most troublesome problem for self-cleaning fabric?

A. Chocolate sauce. B. Smell.

C. Motor oil. D. Mud.

35. The main idea of the passage is about .

A. the future of no laundry

B. the appearance of imaginative clothes

C. the laundry without using water

D. the clothes for the future soldiers

Willpower (意志力) may be abundant — as long as you believe it is.

People who consider willpower a limited resource tend to need a sugary drink to continue working on a hard task, while those who believe willpower is abundant don’t, new research suggests. The findings contradict earlier studies that suggested that willpower is quickly used up.

In recent years, more and more research suggested that willpower is like a muscle that tires out if used too much. Other studies found that a physical boost (推动) could provide that fading resource. For instance, people in one study who drank a sugary drink could maintain self-control after a mentally challenging task.

The idea was that willpower takes energy and, therefore, uses up the brain’s glucose (葡萄糖) supply. As a result, a sugary drink would strengthen people’s willpower by “feeding” the brain, earlier studies suggested.

But people run marathons or do hours of hard work without need to gorge on food the entire time. And a simple sugary drink can have the same effect in athletes.

“We have ample glucose supply in our bodies,” said Carol Dweck, an expert. Dweck and her colleagues asked 87 college students to describe their beliefs about willpower. Some believed the willpower-as-muscle idea, while others believed willpower was abundant and even grows the more it’s used. They then asked them to complete a mentally challenging task, followed by a second task.

Those who believed willpower was limited tired after the first task and performed poorly on the second. If they received a sugary drink after the first task, however, their second performance improved. Those who believed willpower was abundant didn’t tire during the second task without the sugar drink.

“We believe that people who believe willpower is limited are always wondering — ‘Am I tired? Am I hungry? Do I need a drink?’ They feel that they can’t work unless they’re constantly fed,” Dweck said.

As a follow-up, the team is doing experiments to adjust schoolchildren’s beliefs about willpower.

“We teach them about willpower — that it is a self-producing thing, that the longer you wait and the harder you try, the more you can get. And it seems to be effective,” Dweck said.

36. What is the willpower-as-muscle idea?

A. Willpower becomes weak if used too much.

B. Willpower comes from muscles.

C. Willpower needs to be exercised like muscles.

D. Willpower grows strong when it is used.

37. The underlined phrase “gorge on” in the fifth paragraph may mean “ ”.

A. serve B. eat

C. purchase D. prepare

38. From Dweck’s test, we can infer that .

A. people often find excuses for their poor willpower

B. we know when we need to limit our willpower

C. people’s beliefs about willpower may shape their performances

D. limited willpower always needs to be strengthened

39. What did Dweck teach schoolchildren?

A. How to use their willpower effectively.

B. How to produce things with their willpower.

C. How to test harder with willpower.

D. How to get stronger willpower.

40. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

A. Willpower lies in you

B. Willpower is a limited resource

C. Willpower is owned by athletes

D. Willpower is influencing everyone

A week without water can easily kill the average person.

But a garden that isn’t watered for months may produce sweeter, tastier fruits than anything available in most supermarkets. It is called “dry farming”, and throughout the state, this unconventional technique seems to become popular among small producers of tomatoes, apples, grapes, melons and potatoes.

At Happy Boy Farms in America, sales director Jen Lynne believes dry farming could be an important agricultural practice in the future, when water will likely be a less abundant resource.

But the taste of her dry-farmed Early Girl tomatoes is the main reason chefs, sellers and individuals around the country are increasingly calling to place orders (下订单). She finds that many calls come from places where rain falls through the summer, making dry farming impossible.

“Once you taste a dry-farmed tomato, you’ll never want anything else,” she says, adding that she could be selling hundreds of 14-pound cases per day if her 10-acre tomato field could meet the demand. Dry-farmed tomatoes have become a shopper attraction. “People definitely come here to get them. Once someone tastes a dry-farmed tomato, you’ve got a customer for life.”

The idea behind dry farming is that by limiting a plant’s water intake (摄取量), its fruits have less water and more sugar. But the practice isn’t simple. First, dry farming in sandy soil doesn’t work. More importantly, the plants must be dry-farmed from the time they’re planted.

But farming without water has a major drawback: greatly reduced yields (产量). Stan Devoto, a farmer, says his dry-farmed trees produce 12 to 15 tons of apples per acre per year. Watered trees, on the other hand, may bear 40 or 50 tons. And McEnnis says he harvests about 4 tons of tomatoes per acre each summer and fall, while conventional growers may get 40 tons per acre.

Paul Vossen, a farm adviser, says that many people who dry farm do so only because they have no water. “They do it because they have to, and so they’ll make it part of their marketing strategy,” he says.

41. From what Lynne says, we can infer that .

A. she drinks a lot of water every day

B. her dry-farmed tomatoes are in great demand

C. she plants a lot of dry-farmed fruits

D. she lives in an area without much rain

42. What is right about dry farming?

A. It limits water intake of plants.

B. It grows plants in sandy soil.

C. It makes fruits have less sugar.

D. It produces fruits with more water.

43. What is the main disadvantage of dry farming?

A. It decreases farmers’ passion.

B. It makes fruit too sweet.

C. It produces less than traditional farming.

D. It only applies to several kinds of fruits.

44. The last paragraph implies that for some people dry farming is .

A. a way to make full use of land

B. a strategy to attract more farmers

C. a way to save water resources

D. a last choice but works well

45. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Farmers turn off the water to grow sweeter crops.

B. Farmers grow what customers love.

C. Farmers have different attitudes towards dry-farming.

D. Farmers water their crops for sweeter fruits.

They noticed the damage and were about to blame him when they suddenly found the note. The boy said “sorry” to them and the owner was deeply moved by his honesty and urged him to go to school.

The car owner’s friend later posted the story on her microblog and the boy was praised by netizens for his sense of responsibility.

读写任务

One possible version:

When a high school student in Jiangsu province accidentally damaged the tail light of an expensive car on his way to school, he was responsible for what he had done, which moved the car owner, his friend, netizens, etc.

Responsibility is one of characteristics that can make any individual successful in life. No matter what one does, whether at work or at school, having responsibility and acting responsibly is the key quality.

However, nowadays, too many people are not responsible for their wrong or immoral behaviors. For example, many car or truck drivers do not stop to help when they hit others. Apart from avoiding being punished, they do so just because they were brought up and are living in an environment where irresponsibility prevails.

One day, I saw a new cell phone on my classmate’s desk while he was away. Out of curiosity I started to play with it, but it slipped out of my hand and fell to the ground. And there was a crack on its screen. Whether should I face the accident bravely and say sorry to him or just go away? Finally, I decided to apologize to him after careful consideration. And my classmate forgave me for my honesty and did not ask for any compensation.
