Football, to me, is more than just a game. I have probably leanned more valuable lessons from it than from school.

Whe n I jo ined the team freshma n year, I did n ' t realize what I was gett ing in to. Even though I had bee n

play ing since fourth grade and knew it was hard work, nothing would prepare me for the effort I would put into football that year. We worked all summer in the weight room and ran on the track to get in physical and men tal shape before the seas on.

See, football is more of a mental sport than anything else. So running on the track wasn' only about

getting in shape. We would push our minds by running as hard as we could even if we were going to pass out. At the beg innin g, I was immature ( 幼稚)and only thought of myself, sometimes eve n gave up whe n I was tired or hurt. Then after the third game I had a seas on-ending injury. Imagi ne work ing all summer and the n only

being able to play three games! I n eeded surgery (夕卜科手术 )on my arm and at least five mon ths to recover.

Needless to say, I missed the rest of the seas on, but this actually helped me realize that since you n ever

know whe n your last play will be, you should try your hardest in football and life. After freshma n year I

decided that I would always give my best effort. Playing varsity ( 校队的)football has taught me so much more than just what my assignments are on a particular play or how to block ( 阻挡).I have learned to think about others first and realized how importa nt work ing hard is. Being with all my frien ds, even sweati ng and bleedi ng

with them, really made us un ite as a group of hard-work ing young men, who I know will succeed in life.

There is a com mon belief among pare nts that schools are no Ion ger in terested in spell ing. No school I have taught in has ever considered spelling unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, quite different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority ( 优先)it must be given over general language development and writing ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely in writing without holding him back with spelli ng.

If spelli ng becomes the only point of his teacher

He will write only words within his spelling range ( 范围).That ' s whyctesrs often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.

I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experienee:

technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad thing for the teacher who had omitted 略过 to read the composition, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child s deep feelings. The t'eacher was not wrong

to draw attention to the mistakes, but if his priority had centered on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more hope to seek improvement.

B.the role of spelling in general language development

C.the importance of the basic writing skills

Dear editor,

It can be see n easily from the above chart that America n stude nts 72 minu tes on physical activities per day, and those in South Korea 42 minu tes. However, Chin ese stude nts have only 12 mi nu tes for physical activities per day.

The reas ons lie in the follow ing. Almost all the time is spe nt on less ons in Chin ese schools and stude nts are made by pare nts to concen trate on their study even whe n they get back homes. Thus there is little time left for their physical activities.

In my opinion, both the Educati on Departme nts and pare nts are resp on sible to give the stude nts more time for physical activity. An yhow, kno wledge can be lear ned not only from books but also through activitie s.
