A

Jeff, like me, is a writer, a speaker, and the head of a consulting company. As far as I can tell, he’s professional, well respected, capable, honest, and has a popular following. Someone we both know has asked us to cooperate on a project and there’s clearly a mutual benefit to our working together. It all sounds great except for one thing: I don’t like Jeff. I mentioned that to the person who wants us to work together. She told me, essentially, to get over it. “You don’t have to like him,” she said, “but you’d be smart to work with him.”

The typical advice you hear about working with people you don’t like is simply to just conduct whatever business you need to with them and move on. In other words, smile and bear it. But I have found that almost impossible to do. The people we don’t like drive us crazy and we waste a great amount of time complaining about them, or stressing about a conversation we need to have with them.

And that’s not the worst of it. The deeper problem is that if you don’t like someone, chances are they know it, which will cause them not to like you. And if you think working with someone you don’t like is hard, try working with someone who doesn’t like you.

It’s simple, really. According to research, the more people like you, the easier, more productive, and more profitable, your life will be; the people you don’t get along with will find ways to bother you — even if you smile and bear it.

So if smiling and bearing is a losing strategy, what’s the alternative?

Consider, for a moment, the reason you don’t like someone. Maybe you think they have some character weakness or disagreeable quality that bothers you. Like my view of Jeff as self-serving, self-centered and self-satisfied.

Now — and here’s the hard part — think about whether you can discover that disagreeable quality in yourself. You really don’t like that part of yourself, right? You wish you could distance yourself from that side of you. Just like you wish you could distance yourself from that disliked person.

In other words, chances are, the reason you can’t stand that person in the first place, is that they focus you on what you can’t stand about yourself.

Suddenly, working with people you don’t like becomes a lot more interesting. Because getting to know them better, and accepting the parts of them you don’t like, is actually getting to know yourself better and accepting the parts of yourself you don’t like.

So the way to overcome your dislike of someone else? Overcome your dislike of yourself.

Ford grew up on a rural un-electrified farm. Edison was Ford’s role model and as a young man Ford took a job at the Edison Illuminating Company working his way up to chief engineer. In 1896 Ford was thirty-three and, though still working for Edison Co., had created his first experimental automobile the Ford Quadricycle during his off-time. At a party in New York Ford had his first chance to meet his hero Edison, and even able to explain his new automobile to him. Edison was impressed. Edison is said to have shouted “Young man, that’s the thing! You have it! Your car is self-contained and carries its own power plant.” Edison himself had been working on the idea, but had only been considering electricity as the power source, so the idea of a gas engine was a new and somewhat novel(新奇的) one. The words comforted Ford greatly, who immediately set out building a second prototype(原型) which was to become the Model-T.

The two men became fast friends. They would go on camping trips. When Edison couldn’t walk and became confined to a wheelchair, Ford brought an extra one to his estate(庄园) so they could race. At a ceremony of the 50th anniversary of the lightbulb, Edison ended his speech directed at Ford: “As to Henry Ford, words are not enough to express my feelings. I can only say that in the fullest meaning of the term, he is my friend.” Therefore it is no surprise that Ford wanted something to remember Edison by after he died in 1931.

As the legend goes, Ford asked Edison’s son Charles to sit by the dying inventor’s bedside and hold a test tube next to his father’s mouth to catch his final breath. Ford was a man with many strange behaviours, and some say that he was attempting to capture Edison’s soul as it escaped his body in hopes of later making the inventor come to life.

The truth of the story is somewhat similar to the legend. While by no means did Charles hold up a test tube to Edison’s lips as he lay dying, there were indeed a series of eight test tubes very nearby his bed. In the words of his son Charles: “Though he is mainly remembered for his work in electrical fields, his real love was chemistry. It is not strange, but symbolic, that those test tubes were close to him at the end. Immediately after his death I asked his attending physician to seal them with paraffin(石蜡). He did. Later I gave one of them to Mr. Ford. ”

The test tube didn’t turn up until 1950 when it was cataloged in the Ford estate after Ford’s death, and then immediately lost again until 1978 when it was discovered. The tube was labeled “Edison’s Last Breath”.

It is quite touching in its meaning. There was clearly a great respect and admiration between the two men. The test tube stands as a last gift of friendship, memory and inspiration from one inventor to another.

51. Ford impressed Edison with _________ the first time they met.

A. his novel idea of a gas engine

B. his quick way up to a chief engineer

C. his enthusiasm and respect for Edison

D. his new automobile with electricity power

52. The underlined phrase “became confined to”(Paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to _______.

A. was devoted to

B. was limited to

C. was attracted to

D. was accustomed to

53. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT so believable?

A. Charles held a test tube next to his father’s mouth to catch his final breath.

B. Edison referred to Ford as his friend at an anniversary celebration of the lightbulb.

C. There were a series of eight test tubes very nearby his bed when Edison lay dying.

D. Though mainly remembered for his work in electrical fields, Edison loved chemistry.

54. The author’s purpose for writing this passage is to _________.

A. advertise the eight test tubes

B. show the friendship between two inventors

C. solve the mystery of Edison’s death

D. list Ford’s achievements in science

55. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Ford’s Role Model

B. Edison’s Last Breath

C. Process of the Experiment

D. Discovery of the Test Tube

Relax. He is the same little boy you loved yesterday. I smiled trying to hold back the tears. “No he isn’t. Yesterday I dreamed he would be an astronaut. Today I am hoping he will learn to talk.”

It was like some sort of unexpected joke. I could still recall the day that determined my fate. It was October in Ottawa and the summer breezes had given way to the autumn rainfall of leaves. The snow would begin soon. My casually mentioning Wyatt’s behavior to Dr. Martin aroused his worries. He started asking me questions about Wyatt’s activities, speech pattern and emotions. I still see clearly in my mind the cleanness of the room and all its belongings when the doctor turned to me and said, “He almost sounds autistic(自闭的).”

I couldn’t bear that picture in my mind. I had to run to get away from this all too painful place that was telling me what was to be my child’s life — being strange.

I could not remember how many times I told myself, “This is normal. He is a little boy who is not talking yet,” when my asking questions met with his blank-eyed response in a restaurant; how many times I would say, “He loves to play on his own for hours at a time and he never gets into trouble,” when Wyatt was playing games that no one else could think of, let alone join in while other boys in the park were playing together or in small groups. My life was changing direction. So was Wyatt’s.

I started to hide Wyatt from my friends and neighbors especially from good friends. It was too painful to let others know about my boy acting strange.

It was a Thursday afternoon and I found one half of a great pair of kitchen scissors was missing, which was unbelievably sharp. I knew Wyatt had taken the missing blade(刀片).

“Wyatt,” I began as patiently as I could, “Do you see this?” I held up the blade. “Do you know what this is?”

Wyatt put a bunch of fruit loops in his mouth. No response.

“Wyatt!” I forced eye contact with him. “Where is the other blade? See this!” I showed him the half pair.

He smiled big. Ate fruit loops. Turned the TV on and off. Still no response.

I didn’t know what to do. It was really hard. “Wyatt,” I tried once more, “Mommy wants these scissors. Can you go get them for Mommy? It will make Mommy so happy if you do that.”

“Watch TV.” Wyatt asked as he slid down from his kitchen stool and ran off, leaving me shaking my head and wondering in exactly which way this situation was going to end badly.

Five minutes later, I turned my head to see Wyatt coming downstairs with his favorite doll in one hand, the missing half pair of kitchen scissors in the other. I immediately ran over and took it from him.

“Wyatt!” I hugged him. “Thank you for bringing me the scissors! Good job! You did it! These scissors need to stay in the kitchen. These are Mommy’s scissors!”

Wyatt laughed, looked me straight in the eye and said, “Mommy so happy!”

I came close to tears. A realization dawned on me that he was the best gift I had ever gotten even though he was not as normal as other children. And why did I hide him from others as if he were some dark and terrible secret? No! He was my pride. It was a long, hard battle to get him to this point, expressing his wants and needs without turning to violence in frustration. With love and patience I have found the beautiful, happy boy who would teach me more about life.

And that is the solution.

56. From the first part of the story we can get to know that the son’s problem was _________ to the mother.

A. a heavy blow

B. a white lie

C. an unforgettable lesson

A. The questions the doctor asked puzzled her.

B. The cleanness of the doctor’s room struck her.

C. His son’s illness was beyond her wildest expectation.

D. The sudden change of weather left her a deep impression.

58. According to the passage, which of the following indicates that Wyatt is not normal?

A. He never gets into trouble.

B. He responds with blank eyes.

C. He plays with others for hours.

D. He likes watching TV programmes.

59. Wyatt brought the missing half of the scissors back to his mother because _________.

A. his mother forced him to do that

B. he could get his favorite doll in reward

C. he intended to delight his mother

D. he realized that the sharp blade would cause danger

60. What seems to be the solution at the end of the passage?

A. Never hiding Waytt from normal kids.

B. Turning to violence in disappointment occasionally.

C. Making Wyatt a kind and joyful boy with great care.

D. Helping Wyatt learn to talk and become an astronaut.

第二节 下面文章中有5个段落需要添加标题(第61-65题)。请从以下选项(ABCDEF)中选出适合各段落的标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。

A. What We Can Get

B. What We Can Show

C. What We Can Influence

D. Where We Get Our News

E. How We Start and Do Business

F. How We Meet and Stay in Touch with People

Social media communication tools have greatly changed our lives and how we interact with one another and the world around us. Here are the top areas that social media has affected in our daily lives.

61. ___________________

If you’re like me, each morning before checking Yahoo or Google News or an online newspaper site, you first look at the stories your friends and people that you follow are sharing via Twitter or Facebook. After all, you didn’t choose the editors at newspapers and other publications, but you did choose the people and groups that you follow on Twitter, Facebook, or other social networks. Friends on social media are increasingly becoming people’s trusted sources of information, even more than search engines.

62. ___________________

It is easier than ever to start and launch a business today, in great part thanks to social media. We can not only locate potential collaborators and employees through interest-focused Facebook groups, Twitter searches, and social networks, but perhaps more importantly, social media gives people who have time, but little money for advertising, the chance to engage with others and promote their business. A recent article in the New York Times concluded, “For many mom-and-pop shops with no ad budget, Twitter has become their sole means of marketing.”

63. ___________________

People certainly still meet others at social venues like clubs and parties, but it is easier than ever to discover people who share our interests through social media, whether that means via groups on Facebook or following people on Twitter. Even if your interests lie in an obscure area, like 15th century poetry in France or Nepalese art, there is probably a Facebook group about it, and a Twitter search will likely turn up other people talking about the same subject. The introductions are first made through social networks, then people develop the relationship using phone calls and in-person meetings. In other words, social media is increasingly being used to find and keep both old and potentially new friendships.

64. ___________________

The old pattern in communication was that people generally revealed very little of their fears and doubts. They tried to present the image of themselves to other people as completely confident and knowledgeable. But this is shifting, in part, because of social media. We now no longer try to appear perfect, but are more transparent with our thoughts and feelings, to reveal our humanness. We now have queens acknowledging that they get nervous at times when speaking, CEOs being more honest and at times using blogs to express reservations over past decisions, and people openly sharing personal views on social issues.

65. ___________________

It used to be a big deal that Oprah had over 20 million people watch her show every week or that the New York Times was read by millions of people, and while these large media outlets still control much of our attention, now with social media, so-called mainstream media is no longer always the driving influencer of public opinion. The average person’s influence is increasing as communication channels become more open and fluid. As a result, we feel much less like passive bystanders and much more like participants who have a voice in the events in our world.

书面表达

Conflicts among us students are quite common because we are impulsive and don’t know how to control ourselves when they happen. The other day, while waiting for my turn in the canteen, I stepped on another boy’s foot quite by accident. Immediately, I apologized. The boy, however, glared at me, saying that I did that deliberately. His rude remarks annoyed me too. I turned my back to him and tried to ignore him. But to my great surprise, he pushed me hard from behind. It was more than I could bear and eventually the quarrel changed into act of violence.

Despite the fact that conflicts are unavoidable, we, when involved, ought to keep calm, put ourselves into others’ shoes and find a proper way out rather than let the situation become worse. In this case, we are sure to live in peace with those around us.
