An overview of Appraisal Theory
Martin and White detailed Appraisal Theory in their work, and they pointed out, appraisal is an interpersonal system at the level of discourse semantics (2003:33).
The theory is a development to Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The key difference between SFL and Appraisal Theory lies in that the former tend to be explanatory and the latter is interpretive. So the theory focuses on appraisal, which belongs to discourse semantic resources, together with the other two, negotiation and involvement. All the three parts serve as construing interpersonal meaning of the discourse. Appraisal theory has been used in recent years in the analysis of original writings in English, particularly in genres of academic and newspaper discourse, but has rarely been used for the analysis of translation.
Appraisal theory, according to Martin, is regionalized as three sub-systems — ‘attitude’, ‘engagement’ and ‘graduation’.
