ThefirstnoticethatwastakenofmewhenI"settleddown"recentlywasbyagentlemanwhosaidhewasanassessor,andconnectedwiththeU.S.InternalRevenueDepartment.IsaidIhadneverheardofhisbranchofbusinessbefore,butIwasverygladtoseehimallthesame.Wouldhesitdown?Hesatdown.Ididnotknowanythingparticulartosay,andyetIfeltthatpeoplewhohavearrivedatthedignityofkeepinghousemustbeconversational,mustbeeasyandsociableincompany.So,indefaultofanythingelsetosay,Iaskedhimifhewasopeninghisshopinourneighborhood.
Hesaidhewas.[Ididnotwishtoappearignorant,butIhadhopedhewouldmentionwhathehadforsale.]
Iventuredtoaskhim"Howwastrade?"Andhesaid"So-so."
Ithensaidwewoulddropin,andifwelikedhishouseaswellasanyother,wewouldgivehimourbusiness.

Butwhatofit?Itisnothingmorethanthousandsoftherichestandproudest,andmostrespected,honored,andcourtedmeninAmericadoeveryyear.AndsoIdon'tcare.Iamnotashamed.Ishallsimply,forthepresent,talklittleandeschewfire-proofgloves,lestIfallintocertaindreadfulhabitsirrevocably.
