216分) If humans pump enough carbon dioxide (CO2 into the atmosphere, the stratocumulus clouds(层积 could disappear, and the earth's temperature could climb sharply to heights not predicted in current climate models. It would burn the planet. That's the conclusion of a paper published in the journal Nature Geoscience and described in detail by Natalie Wolchover for Quanta Magazine. As Wolchover explained, clouds have long been one of the great uncertainties of climate models. Computer models that easily capture the complexity and detail of most climate systems just aren't powerful enough to predict worldwide changes in cloud behavior. But clouds are important. They reflect sunlight away from the earth's surface. And stratocumulus clouds are those white blankets you might have seen as you looked out the window of arm airplane, rolling out below you and hiding the ground Researchers suspect that certain sudden, past jumps in temperature may have been caused by changes to clouds like these. For the new research, scientists modeled just a small patch of sky using a supercomputer. They found that if carbon dioxide levels reach about 1, 200 parts per million(ppm in the atmosphere, stratocumulus clouds break up. That's a very high carbon dioxide concentration. Right now, levels have climbed past 410 ppm--a dangerous change from 280 ppm before the Industrial Revolution. But humans put more and more CO2 into the atmosphere every year. If current trends continue, the earth could reach 1, 200 ppm within 100 to 150 years. This could happen if our society doesn't follow through on any of its commitments to reduce emissions(排放, Wolchover reported. And even if it does, the result would be another 8 degrees Celsius of heat added to the global average, on top of the dangerous changes already underway due to greenhouse gases. That’s an enormous change, and it goes beyond predictions of worldwide ice melt and catastrophic sea level rise. And, once the stratocumulus clouds are gone, Wolchover reported, they likely wouldn't reappear until atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below where they are currently. There's still some uncertainty in the data. The 1, 200 ppm figure could change as scientists look into the issue further. 1What can we learn from paragraph 2? AMost climate systems are not complex. BCloud behavior is uncertain and hard to predict. CTemperature changes affect the stratocumulus clouds.
DThe stratocumulus clouds protect planes from sunlight. 2How did the scientists study clouds in the new research? ABy measuring the sea level. BBy experimenting in a natural state. CBy comparing climate models. DBy computer modeling and analyzing. 3What does "it" refer to in paragraph 4? AThe atmosphere. BThe earth. COur society. DThe result. 4Which of the following statements would Wolchover most probably agree with? AThe effects of CO2 emissions have been fully assessed. BThe stratocumulus clouds won't return if they are gone. CThe breakup of stratocumulus clouds could result in catastrophes. DOnce CO2 level reaches 1, 200 ppm, stratocumulus clouds will go extinct. 228分)We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively. We achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning. We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive. Conditioned as we are to passive learning, it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers. Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay(传闻 and rumor. Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it. Then the two written statements are compared. Typically, the original message has changed. That’s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors: A statement of opinion by one writer may be restated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts. 1According to the passage, active learning may occur in ________. Areading scientific journals Blistening to the teacher in class Cdoing a chemical experiment Dwatching news programmes on TV 2What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to? AClassroom. BNewspapers. CActive learning. DPassive learning. 3The game Rumor is mentioned in Paragraph 4 in order to tell readers that ________. Aplaying games can make people more active Bpeople tend to like telling lies when playing games Ca message may be changed when being passed on Dpeople may have problems with their sense of hearing 4What can be inferred from the text? AScholars and authors can’t be trusted. BPassive learning may not be reliable. CPeople like spreading rumors in daily life. DActive learning is more Important than passive learning. When an ice cube melts, it creates a puddle (水坑. When an ice sheet (冰盖melts, it raises sea levels. It sounds 238分)simple, but scientists have debated for decades whether both the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets actually were shrinking, and how much that melting contributed to rising sea levels. Now, a new study has provided the best evidence of how the polar ice sheets are responding to our warming world. In the study, an international team of scientists looked at 20 years of' data in the ice sheets collected by 10 satellite missions. The team's conclusion: The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets both are losing ice overall. The researchers also found that between 1992 and 2011, melt water from those shrinking ice sheets caused sea levels to rise by about 11 millimeters. Over the 19 years studied, the Greenland ice sheet lost 2.7 trillion metric tons of ice. The Antarctic ice sheet also shrank by about l.3 trillion metric tons. Previously, some scientists disagreed whether the Antarctic sheet, the largest
mass of ice in the world, was shrinking or growing or neither. While the Earth is warming overall, the effect of climate change varies from region to region. Over the last 15 years, for example, scientists have something disagreed over how climate change has affected the polar ice sheets. Many studies found that the sheets lost a lot of ice and that not enough snow fell on the sheets to compensate for the loss. But other studies found that the loss of ice was balanced by the gain in snowfall. Richard Alley, a glacier scientist at Penn State University, said that many of those studies looked at different areas, and over different time periods. In addition, the studies didn't all use the satellite data in the same way. Those differences made, it difficult to compare the results. The data in the new study matched time periods and areas. The study also combined measurements from kinds of satellites. 1Why does the author use a common-sense phenomenon as the beginning? ATo present the reason for ice sheet melting. BTo show us the result of a scientific experiment. CTo give a simple example to introduce the topic. DTo present a common daily finding obvious to the readers. 2The researchers reached their conclusion by_____. Aanalyzing the findings of former studies Bobserving the Antarctic and Greenland Creferring to the data from satellites Dmaking measurements in the Antarctic and Greenland 3What does the underlined phrase "compensate for" in paragraph 4 refer to? ACut down. BLead to CBring about. DMake up for. 4Which of the following might be the best conclusion for the passage? AIce sheets are shrinking due to global warming. BPeople are suffering from climate change. CRising sea levels makes people live in danger. DShrinking ice has nothing to do with sea levels. 248分)As the morning school bell rings and students rush in, teenagers in one classroom settle onto mats and
meditation(冥想)pillows. They fall silent after the teacher taps a “singing bow”.
These students are in a for-credit, year-long mindfulness class, which is meant to ease youth anxiety and depression and to prevent violence. For 90 minutes, three days a week, they practice a mix of yoga, sitting, and walking meditation, deep breathing, journaling, and non-judgmental listening. Yoga and meditation have gained popularity among Americans in recent decadessupported by studies showing benefits to emotional, mental, and physical health. The centuries-old practices have roots in eastern religions, but Western culture has long focused on physical postures, breathing, and relaxation techniques. Some people have greeted the move with less than enthusiasm. Last year, an elementary school in Ohio ended its mindfulness program after parents complained it was too closely linked to religion. But many school districts are reporting success. In Richmond, California, schools have reported drops in school problems among low-income, at-risk youths. The school district in South Burlington, Vermont, introduced a successful mindfulness course as part of a health and wellness program, and now administrators there have advocated mindfulness into K-12 curriculums. Two years ago, Caverly Morgan developed the after-school mindfulness program teamed up with Allyson Copacinowho teaches yoga. After hundreds of students signed up, Principal Brian Chatard took note. The school was dealing with a student’s suicide, and few resources were available to address students’ emotional and mental health.
“High school is the hardest period of time for kids,” Mr. Chatard said. “You’ve got emotional changes, physical changes, and all the social pressures. It’s also the onset of mental illness for some kids, depression hits, and there’s the pressure of college and sports. All these things kids do is over¬whelming without having a strategy (策略)to deal with it.” And now schools all over the country are introducing the practices. 1What do Western people value more about yoga and meditation? ANon-judgmental listening. BReligious meaning. CJournaling. DPhysical benefits. 2What can we infer about the mindfulness class? AIt is supported by parents. BIt relives pressure of students. CIt mainly builds students up physically. DIt improves students’ academic performance. 3Who started the mindfulness class? AAdministrators.
BBrian Chatard. CCaverly Morgan. DAllyson Copacino. 4What is Mr. Chatard’s attitude towards the program? ASupportive. BConcerned. CDoubtful. DReserved. My English teacher recommended me to take part in an English speech competition the other day. It is known to all my classmates that I can speak English as if I were a native speaker. I want to participate in it. However, I dare not express myself, especially in public. My best friend Bruce has been encouraging me to accept the challenge. In his opinion, whether I can with the competition or not doesn’t matter as long as I try my best. Encouraged by him, I have decided to have a try, challenging myself. I must conquer my shyness. Wish me good luck! Yours, Li Hua

Welcome to drama class, one of my favorite classes at high school. In drama class we used to play a lot of“ drama games. We would improvise(即兴表演, mime(模仿 and above all use our imaginations. My favorite game was called "Spotto". One person stood at the front of the class and performed a scene, completely out of their imagination. When one audience member yelled "Spotto!", the performer had to freeze. Then the person who had yelled Spotto had to get up and improvise a new scenario (剧情based on the position the first performer froze in. This went on as more and more people were added to the scene. Eventually the entire class would have joined the scene. Then the performers would start to leave in reverse(颠倒order. The first performer had to have a good memory to remember all the other scenes. It was a lot of fun, and a good test of everyone's imagination to see what they would come up with. Drama class at my school often involved a big performance at the end of the semester as well. We would work on a production throughout the semester and put on a show for our parents and the school community. It was a great experience to perform on stage in front of a large audience. But it seems that these memories are not lost. They are still filed away in the brain somewhere; they just can’t be easily accessed.
Now, researchers at MIT have developed a means of getting back memories in mice suffering from Alzheimer’s. The method relies on a technique that uses light to control genetically modified neurons (转基因神经元. Currently it is too early to be used in human trials as it involves inserting light emitting (发光 equipment into the subjects’ brains, but the same principles still apply, the researchers said.
“The important point is that this is evidence of concept. That is, even if a memory seems to be gone, it is still there. It’s a matter of how to get it back,” said senior researcher Susumu Tonegawa.
The team took two groups of mice, one genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer’s and one healthy. They then placed them into a room and gave them a mild electric shock. All of the mice showed fear when put back in an hour later. When placed in the room a third time several days later, the Alzheimer’s mice acted normally. They had forgotten the shock.
The researchers were then able to bring back the memory of the shock by activating (激活 the cells in which the memories were stored. Even when the mice were put into an unfamiliar room, they showed fear when the cells
associated with the shock were activated.
“Short-term memory seems to be normal, on the order of hours. But for long-term memory, these early-Alzheimer’s mice seem to be damaged,” said lead researcher Dheeraj Roy. “Directly activating the cells that we believe are holding the memory helps them get it back. This suggests that it is indeed an access problem to the information, not that they’re unable to learn or store this memory.” 1What can we learn about the researchers at MIT? AThey are the pioneers of brain research. BThey have used the method in human trials. CThey can cure Alzheimer’s using the new method. DThey can get back memories in mice with Alzheimer’s. 2Why did the Alzheimer’s mice behave normally a third time? AThey failed to remember the electric shock. BThey were accustomed to the situation. CThey managed to overcome the fear. DThey activated the association. 3For long-term memory, the early Alzheimer’s mice _______. Acan activate their blood cells Bcan’t learn new tricks well Ccan easily get back their memory Dcan’t access the information stored 4The main purpose of the text is to _______. Aintroduce a method of a research Breport the latest discovery about a disease Cgive advice on how to improve memory Dexplain how our brain stores information 【答案】1D 2A 3D 4B 248分) Many youths want to lean how to drive cars. This year one sixth of undergraduates in Beijing have registered at driving school. The students, mostly from majors such as business management or imitational trade, will
finish their driving courses within 20 days or so. Training costs have dropped to 4, 500 yuan for students, according to the Haidian Driving School in Beijing. The price is not really low, but students will accept it, seeing it as an investment (投资 in their future. Familiarity with the operation of computers and fluent English are the basic skills graduating students need to find a job. But a driver s permit has become another factor (因素. “In the job market, owning a driver’s permit sometimes strengthens a graduating student’s competitiveness for a good position,” says Li Hua, an undergraduate at the China University of Political Science and law.
Cars will become a necessary part of many people’s lives in the coming years, and it is difficult to get a permit out of campus because of the pressures on working people’s time. “Having a full-time job after graduation offers limited time to learn to drive. We senior students have plenty of spare time, plenty of oppurtunity to learn,” says another undergraduate at the university. Wu Dong, an official at the driving school, said undergraduates were very able and serious, and could grasp in an hour what ordinary people took four hours to learn. In this driving school, middle-aged people, young women and college students are the main customers. From March 1, 2018, to get a driver’s permit, a beginner is now required to have at least 86 hours’ practice before the final road test. 1Why do the undergraduates learn to drive? AThey are the students from special subject or course. BThey like to drive cars very much. CThey want y become full time drivers after graduation. DThey need this skill to find a good job in the future. 2What is Wu Dong’s opinion of students learning to drive? AIt would make the life more interesting. BYouths would have an advantage in learning to drive. CIt is a waste of money and time to learn to drive. DIt would be better to learn it at college than at work. 3To get the permit, the student ________. Arequires some time to practice before the final road test Bmust pay more money before the final road test Cmust practice more to learn to drive when having a job Drequires to learn some more other subjects to drive
【答案】1D 2B 3A 2510分)E Science has a lot of uses. It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation(诱惑 to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation. Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t?
To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines(学科). Considering this, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox(非常规的, and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters. On the whole,Brooks’ story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’ attempt to translate his tale into science. 1The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to__________. Aillustrate where science can be applied Bdemonstrate the value of Brooks’ new book Cremind the reader of the importance of science Dexplain why many writers use science in their works 2According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book? AIts strong basis. BIts convincing points. CIts clear writing.
DIts memorable characters. 3What is the author’s general attitude towards the book? AContradictory. BSupportive. CCautious. 228分) One of the statements that many experts seem to agree on is the fact that the great things starts to happen the minute you step outside of your comfort zones. As soon as you decide that you are willing to go beyond what is safe, the possibilities are endless. For me, one of the most important things that we should always keep in mind is the fact that growth and comfort can’t coexist.
Personal development author Napoleon Hill once said: “Whatever the mind can understand and believe, the mind can achieve. Regardless of how many times you may have failed in the past or how lofty(崇高的 your aims and hopes may be.” This statement is especially powerful because it reminds us that we are the only ones who can be responsible for how far we will go. However, stepping outside of our comfort zone is probably the most important step to experiencing real change. For a long time, I knew that I wanted to live in Argentina, so halfway through my bachelor’s degree, I bought a one-way ticket there. While in Argentina, I finished the last two years of my degree online before flying back home for graduation. I currently still live in Argentina, and I can proudly say that taking the necessary steps to make it a reality was one of the most important things I could have done. This, of course, by no means at all applies to everyone, and I’m not implying we should all buy one-way tickets to foreign countries and see what happens. But it’s important to know that we should recognize what we desire and try to
bring our dreams to life. Living in a comfort zone can trick us into believing that we have an abundant amount of time when, in reality, we all know that years can fly by without us having accomplished much of what we really wanted to do. So why wait? I’m thankful that I didn’t put off my move until a later date because I would have missed out on a lot of amazing life experiences that have shaped me as a person. If we want to experience even a small amount of change, we will have to step outside of it. 1Why do people prefer staying in comfort zone? AIt makes people feel safe. BIt leads to great things. CIt is important for growth. DIt helps make wise decisions. 2What does Napoleon Hill’s statement mean? ATime and tide wait for no man. BThe higher you fly, the harder you fail. CFailure is the mother of success. DNothing is impossible to a willing heart. 3Which matters most to the author in his/her story? AMoving to Argentina. BGetting the bachelor’s degree. CStudying online. DFlying back for graduation. 4The author used his/her story to ________. Apersuade others to follow his/her example Bencourage others to take immediate action Cinform people of different foreign culture Dremind people to be thankful in life 5Which one could be the best title? AIdentify your comfort zone. BValue your precious time. CAlways try something new. DMake the best decisions.
【答案】1A 2D 3A 4B 5C 238分)It is one of the oldest magic tricks in the booka magician locks a woman in a box, with her head and feet sticking out from either end, and saws ( it in half. But when she finally jumps out of the box, the woman is unharmed. This trick was introduced nearly a century ago. It has been around for some time, but it never goes wrong. Why is it so successful? The answer is simple: the human mind is easily fooled. Our brain processes the world around us based on information that sensory organs, including the eyes, pick up. For instance, when we see a cow or a horse standing behind a tree, we automatically “fill in” the part of the animal’s body that is hidden from our sight. “So the brain is taking this kind of very sparse (匮乏的 information about the world and it’s generating this rich world by filling in information,” Stephen Macknik, a scientist at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona, US, told Science magazine. But since our brains are filling in the gaps, sometimes they get it wrong. They tend to be driven by our previous experiences and we expect things to go as they have in the past even if sometimes they do not. This tendency explains magicians’ success in fooling people with well-known coin tricks. For example, when you see a magician throw a coin up and down in one hand and then fake a coin thrown to the other hand, you would naturally believe that the coin is in the other hand. Apart from the information gaps, magicians also use the “blind spots” theory when doing their shows. The most well-known experiment demonstrating this theory is called the “invisible gorilla (大猩猩”, in which volunteers watch a video of two basketball teams. They are asked to count how many times the teams wearing white shirts pass the ball. In the meantime, a person dressed as a gorilla walks onto the court. But shockingly, half of the viewers don’t notice the gorilla, even when they appear to be looking directly at it.
Magicians employ this tactic (招数, what they call “misdirection”, in almost every one of their acts. They direct our attention somewhere else using comedy and music, which can make us miss stuff during the performance. 1The magic trick is mentioned in the first paragraph to ________. Aintroduce the steps of the magic trick Bprove magic tricks seldom go wrong Creveal how magic tricks are designed
Dget us to wonder how magicians trick the mind 2We can conclude from the passage that the human mind is easily fooled because our brain ________. Amay have difficulty remembering what we just saw Bfills in information about the magic world Cis influenced by our previous experiences Dprocesses far more information than our sensory organs pick up 3What does the underlined word “invisible” in paragraph 7 refer to? AUnnoticed. BUnimportant. CUnpleasant. DUnprepared. 4During the “invisible gorilla” experiment, people watching the video ignore the “gorilla” because ________. Athey don’t look directly at it Bthey are not interested in it Cthey are too focused on counting Dthey consider it to be a distraction 5Why do magicians usually use comedy and music when they play magic tricks? ATo get viewers to stay focused on the show. BTo make the show more fun and exciting. CTo draw viewers’ attention away from a secret action. DTo create information gaps between magicians and viewers. 【答案】1 D 2 C 3 A 4 C 5 C

Mary Paul, Milwaukee, Wisconsin As my son Mike and I drove to the mall, we passed a Salvation Army Santa ringing his bell. “Mike,” I said, “there’s Santa!” He shook his head. “That’s just some guy in a Santa suit,” he said. Suddenly, Mike took off toward him. Turning back to me, he shouted. “Now, there’s the real Santa!”
