It’s extremely disappointing when you 31 yourself plenty of time to get to the airport and –once there—it’s brought to your 32 that there’s a problem with your flight. The staff at the check-in are trying to convince you that it won’t be long before the problem is 33 . Yet, hours later you feel let 34 as you continue to wait patiently for your boarding call. Of course, you won’t gain 35 by complaining. By this stage you realize you’re going to miss your connecting flight and now you must change your booking. You feel 36 you’re never going to get your destination. However, there’s the 37 chance that you could be one of the lucky ones spending the night at a top class hotel at the expense of the airline that caused your problem in the first place. Admittedly, you would rather be 38 for your original destination. Regular customers advise us just to accept the fact 39 no matter how frustrating this situation might be, it’s unavoidable and shouldn’t affect us so much. Nevertheless, it’ll always be a common sight to see people eagerly waiting 40 the hope of hearing their flight announced.

I do remember sitting on the stairs and trying over and over again to tie one of my shoelaces, but that’s all that comes back to me.

On the other hand, I can remember very 43 the journeys I made to and from the school because they were so extremely exciting. Great excitement is probably the only thing that really interests a six-year-old boy and it sticks in his mind. In my case, the excitement centered around my new tricycle. I rode to school on it every day with my eldest sister riding on hers. No grown-up came with us, and I can remember so vividly how we 44 to go racing at enormous tricycle speeds down the middle of the road and then when we came to a corner, we would lean to one side and take it on two wheels.

In a separate study experts have warned of the dangers of children under the age of two 51 (watch) television. The research has shown that exposure to television is res 52 for anything from delayed speech to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (注意缺陷障碍). The problem with television is that it confuses infants, who’ll block out the background noise coming from it. As 53 result, they learn to ignore all noise and this includes speech. Pediatric and language specialists also disapprove of radio that has much the same ef 54 on a child’s language development.

Montana Born

Leonard Clark

I saw her first through wavering candlelight.

My sister in her cradle one hour old:

Outside, the snow was drifting through the night.

But she lay warm, obvious to the cold.

Her eyes were closed, the half-moist wisps of hair,

A honey harvest on her wrinkled head,

The smile upon her face as if she was elsewhere,

But knew the land she had inherited.

My mother there at peace, her labor done,

Their greyness gone, her cheeks were coralline,

She welcomed me, her wondering first-born son

And placed my sister’s new-nailed hand in mine.

I looked through the freezing window pane,

The whitening acre bare and stretching far

That nine months hence would heave with welling grain,

And over every distant peak a star.

And she, my winter sister, does she know,

That all this homely countryside is hers.

Where once were warring Sioux and buffalo,

And covered wagons full of travelers?

But I will tell her the Indian tales,

And show her grass-high fields, and sugar beet.

We’ll ride all day along the western trails,

Missouri River glinting at our feet.

Montana born. she’ll sleep beneath these beams,

And learn the simple ways, and say her prayers,

And even now she may see in her dreams

Another boy come climbing up the stairs.

Questions 66-70: Answer the questions according to the passage.

66. How old was Clark’s sister?

67. When was the born?

68. In which paragraph was the baby’s appearance described?

69. What did Leonard’s mother put in Clark’s hand?

70. Was the baby born in the countryside?

(D)

What will a day in your life be like in 2025? Luis Villazon lets you peer into the future..

6:45

The alarm clock goes off. It’s set for 7:00, but the clock’s connected to the internet and has woken you fifteen minutes earlier than usual because the traffic reports from the internet are predicting longer delays today due to a Tube strike. The internet radio station streams music from a standardized station playlist. But there’s also a special internet service which means that the news, traffic and weather are local, and are customized for you using the preferences that you set before.

7:50

Your journey to work is still by car—the public transport hasn’t improved much. It’s now almost impossible to buy a new car that isn’t at least a hybrid, uses regenerative braking (which charges a battery as you brake) and smart idling (which cuts the engine if you stop for more than a few seconds). Service stations now have fast-charge points at some locations where you can leave your car recharging while you have a coffee.

18:30

All the checkouts at your local supermarkets are self-service. This is apart from a single “assisted checkout”, intended for customers with disabilities and staffed on demand. Most food manufacturers now label their products with food miles and some have gone a step further with a “carbon foodprint”—the total carbon emitted during the production process, not just transportation.

22:30

Through the night, while you’re asleep and electricity demand is low, wind and wave power continue to supply electricity to the national grid. Combined with the photovoltaic cells you put on the roof, more than fifteen percent of your total electricity now comes from green sources. Long showers and keeping the TV on standby are things of the past. The smart meter allows you to keep track of your electricity consumption.

Questions 71-75: Complete the summary of the passage above with no more than three words for each blank according to the passage.

This passage allows us to peer at something that will probably happen in the year of 71 . In the morning, the 72 will wake us in time according to the traffic report from the internet. Then we will still drive to work, but the car is a hybrid, using regenerative braking; and smart idling. We can recharge our cars while we have a coffee in a service ourselves 73 . In the afternoon when we go shopping in a supermarket, we will all self serve ourselves and some food will even be 74 with a “carbon foodprint”. During the night, 75 power will continue to supply us electricity and over fifteen percent of our total electricity will come from green sources.
